To all whom it may concern: 1

Be it known that I, JAMES WATSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marinette, in the county of Marinette and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Folding Stove, of which the following is a specification.

The device forming the subject matter of this application is a folding stove of that general type in which a central furnace is disposed between a pair of side ovens, and one object of the invention is to provide novel means for detachably engaging the furnace with the ovens.

A further object of the invention is to improve the construction of the ovens.

It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertainsv With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The stove forming the subject matter of this application preferably is made of metal throughout, as hereinafter described, and

embodies a central furnace 1 including a top 2 having end flanges 3. Doors 4 are hinged at 5 to the end flanges 3, to swing vertically, the doors being provided with handles 40 of any desired kind, and having side flanges 41, along their longitudinal edges. The top 2 is supplied with depending side flanges 6. On the under surface of the top 2, near to the corners thereof, are placed depending projections 7. Near to one end, the top 2 of the central furnace is supplied with a depending collar 8 cooperating with a collapsible flue 9 held in place by means of a retainer 10. The flue 9 is shown, described and claimed in my copending appli cation for Letters Patent on an elbow, Serial No. 208594, filed on December 24, 1917. Further, the retainer 10 is embodied in my copending application, Serial No. 210,906, filed on the 8th day of January, 1918, for Letters Patent on a flat stove. The retainer and the flue, therefore, need not be described at length in this specification.

On each side of the central furnace 1 are located side ovens. Since the side ovens are alike, but one of them will be described. Each side oven com-prises a boxlike case 11 including a circumscribing rim 12 fash: ioned into a trough 14, extended entirely around the rim. The numeral 15 denotes a back, constituting a part of the case 11, the back having a lip 16, interlocked with the trough 14, to hold the back in place. An upwardly inclined web 17 is carried by the back 15 and supports a rigid upright baflie 18 which may be supplied with an asbestos facing 19. The baflie 18 isspaced from the back 15, and the chamber between the baffle and the back is open at the top, as clearly disclosed in Fig. 2.

The oven comprises ends 20 supplied with edge flanges 22, the ends 20 being hinged as shown at 21 to the side portions of the rim 12 of the case 11. The numeral 23 marks a top hinged at 24 to the upper portion of the rim 12 and including end flanges 25. The top 23 may carry a lining 33. Buttons 34 are rotatably mounted on the top 23 and coact with the flanges 22 of the ends 20 in a manner which will be set forth hereinafter. Vertically spaced buttons 35 are mounted to rotate on the ends 20. The functions of the buttons 35 will be alluded to hereinafter.

A side wall 26 is hinged at 27 to the outer edge of the top 23, for vertical swinging movement, and carries a lining 36, the side wall being supplied with :a handle 28, where by the side wall, which constitutes a door,

may be opened and closed. The side Wall 26 is provided with end flanges 29.

The numeral 30 .marksan inclined bot-tom, carrying a protecting plate 39, and hinged as shown at 31 to the end portions of'the rim 1.2 of the casell. The bottom 80 is provided with all upstanding marginal flange 32. A depending side wall 37 is hinged at 38 to the outer edge of the bottom 30 and is provided with end .fianges 42. A loop shaped support 43 is disposed above the bottom 30 .and is hinged in sockets 44 carried by the bottom, the sockets being located near to the outer ed'ge of the bottom. A loop shaped brace 45 is hinged at 46 to the support and rests on the bottom part of the rim 12, to hold the support in horizontal osition.

The order of procedure in setting up the stove may be varied, but the relation of the several parts, generally stated, {is as follows I The case 11 is disposed vertically, the top 2 3 is. swung into a horizontal position, and

The ends 20 are swung outwardly into parallelism until they abut against the "flanges 25 of the top 23 and against the flanges 29 of the side wall 26. The buttons 34 on the top 23. are turned 11 until they engage beneath the flanges 22 of the ends 20 at the upper edges of the ends20. The bottom 80 is swung downwardly into the in clined position shown in Fig. 2, and the upper-most buttons 85 on the ends 20 are engaged inside of ,the flanges 32 on the bottom. The side wall 37 is supported on the bottom portions of the flanges 22 on the ends 20 .and abuts against the vertical port-ions of the flanges 22. The lowermost buttons 35 on the ends 20 are turned until .they engage inside of .the flanges 42 on the ends of the-side wall 37,. The support 43 is swung upwardly into a horizontal position and is sustained by the. depending brace 4'5 which rests on .the bottom portion of the rim 12 of the boxlike case 11. The two side ovens ,may be set up in this way for use.

In setting up the furnace 1, the top 2 is disposed horizontally, and .the doors 4 hang vertically. The side flanges ,6 of the .top 2 are received in the troughs 14 at the top of the case 11, and the projections 7 on the top 2 'bear against the upper edges of the backs 15. When the doom 4 are closed, the side flanges 41 are received in the ,side portions of t t ughs 14, as s w in g- The collapsible flue is opened and attached to .the top ,2 of thefurnace by means of the reta'iner 10.

Fuel may be inserted into the furnace 1, at the ends thereof, when the doors 4 are opened, and in this connection it is to be observed that fuel of any desired kind may be employed. 'l heside avall 26- closes the space above the bottom 30, but the side wall, constituting a door, may be opened at any time, to permit a pan or other utensil, indicated at 47, to :be placed on the support 43. The fixed side wall .37 which is hinged to the outer edge of the bottom 30, forms a closure for the space beneath the bottom.

The central furnace "1 may be folded up into compact form, and the ovens may be folded, as shown in Fig. 5. The flue 9 may be folded also,.and the various parts may be .placed within a casing shown in'Figs. -6 and 7, and now to be described.

The casing, denoted generally by the numeral 48, embodies a tank 49, having handles 50. The lower .end of the tank 49 is seated in a receptacle 51 which may be used for cooking vegetables- The receptacle'51 is received ma ,pan 5.2., Which, also, maybe used for cooking. A pan 5.3 is inverted over the upper end of .the tank 49 and forms a lid therefor. The lid or pan v53 is supplied with eyes 54 located within the contour of the handles 5.0 on the tank .49. The ,pan 52 is provided with eyes 55. The receptac'le51 may be supplied with eyes56 which serve as handles. Retractile springs v57 areprovided, the springs bein supplied at :their ends with snaps 58. The sprin s 57 may or may not be extended through the eyes 56 on the receptacle 51, the snaps 158 being engaged, respectively, with the eyes55 on the pan 52 and with the eyes 54 on the pan or lid 53. The construction is such that the springs 57 will -hold the parts52 and 53 in place, the folded stove thus "being housed securely within the casing 48.

When thestove is in use, the tank 49ymay be employed to heat water, under which circumstances, the tank mayfbe placed against one end of the central furnace 1, as shown in Fig. 1.

The inclined bottom 30, in combination with the web 17 and the baflle 18, secure an even distribution of heat within the oven. The baffle 18 prevents the heat from striking horizontally across the oven, toward the pan 47, thereby baking the contents ofxthe pan to a greater extent adjacent the inner edge of the pan than adjacent the outer edge of the pan, the heat being delivered over the upper :edge of the baflle 18, and an even distribu tion being brought about, as aforesaid.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is: r

.1. In a deviceof the class described, side ovens provided adjacent their upper edges and upon their ends with troughs backs constituting .p arts of the ovens, and embodytroughs at the upper edges of the ovens; doors having inwardly extended flanges received, when the doors are closed, in the troughs at the ends of the ovens; means for connecting the doors with the furnace for vertical swinging movement; and projections on the top of the furnace, the projections engaging the backs.

2. In a device of the class described, a furnace; an oven at one side of the furnace and comprising a case detachably interengaged with the furnace; ends hinged to the case; an inclined bottom between the ends and having its inner edge hinged to the case; a depending side wall hinged to the outer edge of the bottom and extended between the ends to form a prop for the bottom and to form a closure for the space below the bottom; a support disposed above the bottom; a top hinged to the case and cooperating with the ends; and a depending side wall hinged at its upper edge to the top and forming a movable closure for the space above the bottom.

3. In a device of the class described, a furnace; an oven at one side of the furnace and comprising a case detachably interengaged with the furnace; ends hinged to the case; an inclined bottom between the ends and having its inner edge hinged to the case; a depending side wall hinged to the outer edge of the bottom and extended between the ends to form a prop for the bottom and to form a closure for the space below the bottom; a support disposed above the bottom, one end of the support being hinged to the bottom; a brace hinged to the other end of the support and cooperating with the case; a top hinged to the case and cooperating with the ends; and a depending side wall hinged at its upper edge t the top and forming a movable closure for the space above the bottom.

4. In a device of the class described, a

5. In a device of the class described, a furnace; an oven at one side of the furnace and comprising a case detachably interengaged with the furnace and including a back; ends hinged to the case; an inclined bottombetween the ends and having its inner edge hinged to the case; a depending side wall hinged to the outer edge of the bottom and extended between the ends to form a prop for the bottom and to form a closure for the space below the bottom; a support disposed above the bottom; a top hinged to the case and cooperating with the ends; a depending side wall hinged at its upper edge to the top and forming a movable closure for the space above the bottom; an inclined web projecting outwardly from the back; and a deflector carried by the web and spaced from the back, the deflector extending upwardly above the support.
