APPLICATION FILED MAY 4-. I9I8.
Patented Feb. 25, 1919.
awwmtoi;
PETER 1a. MQLAFFERTY, ornnw CASTLE, PENNSYLVANIA- tro I Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed-May 4, 191a, Serial No. 232,613.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER R. MOLAFFERTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Castle, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
' tion to a support.
This invention relates to a balancing toy and has for its primary object to construct a toy in a manner-that the figure thereof may have a plurality of movements and may assume a plurality of positions.
'An object of the-invention is to provide a toy in which the figure may be balanced in,v
With these and other objects in View the invention will be better understood from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a toy constructed in accordance with my inven- 80 i tion.
Fig. '2'is'an enlarged view of the arm showing its connection with the body. 7
igs. 3 and. 4 are diagrammatic views ,showing two positions of the figure.
Fig. 5 is a detailed view of a slight modification of my invention. My invention in one ofits forms consists of a fi re l the feet 2 of which are curved in pr etermined directions as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4 so as to readily rock upon the top surface 3 of a stand 4.. Surrounding v the surface 3 is an 'upstandin flange 5 which will prevent movement of t e fi re' ofi of the surface 3 when violently rock although I wishit to be understood that it is not abso lutely necessary to havetheflange 5 or in fact the stand 4 as the figure may be rocked upon any other suitable surface.
The arms 6 of the figure are pivotally connected to the body in any suitable manner Patented Feb. 25-, 1919.
such as by screws 7 which may be tightened to a degree great enough to allow the arni to assume any angular position. If found advantageous in practice the screw may have a thumb piece 8 as clearly shown in Fig. 5 so that an operator may readily tighten the screw should the connection between the arm and the body become loose. Fixed to the arms is a downwardly curved pole 9 to the extremities of which areconnected weights 10. This pole curves in the proper direction to place the center of gravity below the figure.
From'the foregoing description it will be seen that by slightly adjusting the arms 6 the center of gravity may be readily changed to allow the figure to assume any angular direction while at the same time the figure may be oscillated'in any ofits angular positions. Of course it is to be understood that the device may be constructed in various other manners than that shown for accomplishing an adjustable connection between the weights and the body and therefore I do not desire to be limited except .as set forth in the claim hereto appended.
- Having described my" inventioh, what I claim is:
In combination with a stand having a flat top and an upstanding retaining flange encircling the top, a figure having curved feet adapted to move rockingly upon the top of the stand within the upstanding flange, said figure being further provided with arms ad justably connected to the body, a pole fixed to the arms and weights carried by the pole, said flange preventing falling of the figure from the stand during creeping movement caused by its rocking.
In testimony whereof I aifixmy signature.
PETER n. MQLAFFERTY.
