TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 25, 1918. Seria1No.236,631.
To a?! IIIHHIL it may concern Be it known that T, Jens F. llncnnnu, a citizcn'of the United States, residing at Plainwell, in the county of Allegan and State of lviichigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide in a toy of simple structure, one which is of the merry-go-round type, and one which may be manually operated to cause figures which are provided upon the toy to assume different elevations as they are moved in circular paths.
\Vith this object in view the toy prises a base having a standard provided A shaft is journaled in the standard and carries a grooved iisk which is provided with a handle. A second shaft is vertically positioned upon the base and provided at its lower portion with a grooved disk. A strip is mounted upon the base between the shaft and the standard and is provided with openings which are located approximately the same distance from the upper surface of the base. A cord or belt is trained around the disk and the intermediate portions of the runs of the said cord pass through the said openings in the strip vi hereby the runs are guided from the vertically disposed disk to the horizontally disposed disk. A head is mounted at the upper end of the vertically disposed shaft and arms are pivotally connected" with the said head. The arms carry at their lower ends figures which may represent animals or people and when the vertically disposed shaft is rotated the arms then swing out- 1 1 warely and upwardly whereby the tigures are elevated and the extent to which they are elevated is governed by the rate of speed at which the verti 'al shaft is rotated.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the toy;
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view showing the mounting of the vertical shaft and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view through the operating pulley.
The toy comprises a base 1 which may be of metal or wood, or any other suitable material. A standard 2 is mounted upon the base and a shaft 3 is journaled in the standard. The shaft 3 carries COIH- a grooved disk -.l which is provided with an eccentri-.
rally positioned handle t. A strip 5 is ver- Patented Felt. 25, thiffl...
tically positioned upon the base 1 and is provided with openings 6 which are located substantially the same distance from the upper surface of the base 1. vertically positioned upon the base 1 and is journaled for rotation. A grooved disk 8 is carriedat the lower portion of the shaft 7 and a head 9 is carried at the upper end thereof. The upper ends of arms 10 A shaft 7 is are pivotally connected with the head 9 and g the said arms 10 carry at their lower free ends figures 11 which may simulate animals or-people or other objects.
A cord 12, is trained around the'disks 4 and 8 and the intermediate portions of the runs of the cord 12 are threaded through the openings 6. The disks 4 and 8 are disposed at right angles to each other and the strip 5 is disposed at a right angle to the plane of the base 1. Therefore the openings 6 serve as guides for directing the runs of the cord 12 from the pulley d to the pulley 8 and hack.
it is obvious that when the shaft 3 is rotated by using the handle rotary movement is imparted by the cord 12 and the pulley 8 to the shaft 7. As the shaft 7 rotates the lower ends of the arms 10 swing outwardly and upwardly and the figures 11 are elevated .with relation to the base 1. The extcnt to which the figures 11 are elevated is gov mncd by the rate of speed at which the shaft 7 is rotated.
Therefore it will be seen that a toy of simple and durahle structure is provided and that the same may he used for amusement and the instruction of children to demonstrate the etfe t which may be attained by the expenditure of di'lferent degrees of energy or force.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. A toy comprising a base, a vertically disposed shaft jonrnaled thereon, a head carried by the shaft, arms pivoted to the head, figures carried by the arms, a disk fixed to the lower portion of the shaft and. disposed above the upper surface of the base, a second disk jcairnaled on the base and provided with a handle, and a iiexihle member trained about both of said disks.
2. A toy romprising a. base, a. vertically disposed shaft journaled thereon, a head will head, figures carried by the arms, a disk fixed to the lower portion of the shaft and disposed above the upper surface of the base, a strip mounted on the base and provided with openings which are located substantially the same distance above the surface of the base and a cord threaded through thel openings and trained around the said dis 3. A toy comprising a base, a shaft journaled thereon and vertically disposed, a head carried by the shaft, arms pivoted to the head, figures carried by the arms, a disk fixed to the shaft and disposed above the upper surface of the base, a vertically disposed strip mounted on the base and provided with openings which are located substantially the same distance above the surface of the base, a vertically disposed standard mounted on the base, a shaft journaled in the standard, a vertically disposed disk fixed to the shaft, a handle mounted on the last mentioned disk, and a cord trained around both of said disks and having the intermediate portions of its runs threaded through the openings of the strip.
In testimony whereof I afiix my si nature.
