To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonen J. NOVIKOFF,
' a citizen of Russia, resident of Philadelphia,
county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Hand-Grenades, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in projectiles and particularly to types known 'as hand grenades.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a grenade in a form suitable to be thrown by hand and in a particularly convenient manner, a portion of the grenade remainingin the hand.
' A further object is to provide a grenade which will become automatically discharged or detonated upon striking a rigid or fixed object.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described andshown 1n the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through a grenade made in accordance with the invention, the section being taken substantially on line 1-1 of Fig. 5.

The invention comprises a rigld tubular stem or sleeve 15, having an annular enlargement 16, midway in its length, and screw-threaded in its extreme upper end to receive the cap screw 17, provided with a central downwardly extending stem 18. An outer sleeve 20, is slidably engaged with the upper portion of the tubular stem 15, the same being adapted to be grasped 1n the hand and having an enlarged flanged outer view taken and in end 21, preventing the outer sleeve fromslipping through the hand at the moment it is discharged. This sleeve is normally held in operative positionby means of a bent flat spring 22, the'same being made however, so that upon force being exerted, the spring will be depressed, allowin the outer hand sleeve 20, to readily slide over and separate from the main stem 15.
A hammer 24 having a rounded head 25, adapted to make contact with the projecting pin 18, is held in an inoperative position normally, by reason of the reduced neck 26, the same engaging with the bent end 27, of another flat spring 28, rigidly engaged to the outer wall of the stem 15 by the screw 29, and passing through an opening appropriately formed in .the stem.
At the lower end of the hammer 24 is engaged a thimble .30 holding 'a cartridge 31,
which contains a high explosive or detonator 32, the purpose of which. will be further on-described.
The lower end of the stem 15, is screwthreaded to a plug35, formed with a head.
or cap 36, containing a tubular nipple 37,
having a conical point 38, through the sides of which extends a plurality of recesses 39,
leading to the central cavity 40, which extends downwardly throughthe tube 41, into the body of thecharge chamber as can best 'be seen in Fig. 1.
The charge chamber is formed in a pecul- 1 ar manner, the same. consisting of acentral tubular element 44, containing a pow- -der charge 45, and surrounded by a second powder charge 46, held'in a triangularly sectioned chamber '47, embedded in another powder charge 48, contained in the hexagonal walls 49, surrounded by a third powder charge 50, arranged within the hexagonal Walls 51 of another chamber embedded in the outer powder charge 52, carried in a circular shell or casing 53.
The upper ends of the plates 4447 and 49 enter into a powder chamber 56, while the partition plate 51 contacts with the head 36. The outer circularly bent plate or casing 53 is crimped to engage with the heads 36 and held in place by a washer like cap plate57, the lower of the casing 53 being formed with inturned edges 54, by means of which the lower or bottom cover 55 is held in place.
