Improvement in Attachments to Furniture.
No, 129,556 PatentedJuly16,1872.

UNITED STATES PATENT DFFICE.
JACOB B. HAUPT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHMENTS FOR FURNITURE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,556, dated July 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB B. HAUPT, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Attachment to Furniture; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to a device, applicable to bed-posts, berths of sleeping-cars, clothesracks, or other places, for holding towels, clothes, &c., said device being let into the wood-work so as to close flush therewith, and thus be out of the way when the bed or berth is unoccupied, or the latter is to be folded away, or the attachment is not required for use, in connection with a spring engaging with the end of the hook of the attachment, for holding it in place during transportation.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a leg of a bedstead, frame of the berth of a sleeping-car, or other piece of furniture or woodwork to which the attachment is to be applied. This attachment consists of a hinged hook, B, which is so weighted at one end that when it is required for use itis merely started from its vertical position and at once falls outward and drops horizontally. When the hook is to be folded or closed it is thrown or swung upward, and when to its fullest egtent its weighted end causes it to remain in a state of rest without means of fastening. This hook has its axis mou nted on ears 0 of a face-plate, D,
which is let into and secured to the part A so as to be flush therewith, (see a a, Fig. 3,) and the hook will have its outer side flattened, as at b, and in closing enter the openin gin the face-plate, so as to have said outer or exposed side flush with said plate.-
It will be seen that the attachment will at all times afford ready means for hanging clothes, &c., and may be folded that it will not project in the least beyond the face of the part A, whereby bed-posts having the attachments may be easily transported without interference of the attachment, and the frame-Work of berths of sleeping-cars may be stowed away or piled together without loss of room, since the attachment does not project beyond the surface of the frame-work; for clothes-racks the attachment is equally and readily applicable.
In some cases, as in sleeping-cars or transportation of bed-posts, the shaking thereof will cause quivering or vibration of the hook, and open the latter when not required for use. To prevent this I arrange a spring, E, which will drop into a notch, c, in the free end of the hook when the latter is closed, and thus serve to hold it in place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The attachment consisting of a plate, D, let in flush with the face of the wood-work A and a hook, B, .weighted at its fulcrum, so as both ,t0 be thrown down and held up, and folding flush with the plate D, in connection with the auxiliary spring E, engaging with the end of the hook, all as set forth.
The ,above signed by me this 8th day of January, 1872.
J. B. HAUPT.
