COMBINATION-PADLOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 12, 1915. Serial No. 61,132.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DONALD A. MoKAY; a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Elnora, in the Province of Alberta and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Padlocks, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to locks and more specifically to an improved form of keyless padlock.
The object of this invention is to provide a keyless padlock in which the movement of the shackle thereofdepends upon the rela tive position of a plurality ofrotatable disk tumblers.- A still further object of this invention is to provide a device of the kind above described, that is simple in construction, eflicient in operation, and consists of a minimum num ber of parts. ,7 With these and other objects in view, this inventionresides in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrange- 1nent"of--parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional viewof the improved device, the shackle thereof being locked against movement;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device with one of the plates thereof removed;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in of a portion of the lock.-
Referring tothe parts elevation merals, this padlock comprises a pair of plates 10 and 11 that are suitably secured by the, means 12. The plate 10 is provided with a plurality of recesses for the receptionof the disk tumblers 13 and running from'these recesses to receive the disk tumblers 13 are openings through which the shafts 14 arepositioned. These shafts 14 are secured fast to the, disk tumblers 13 and their outer ends are provided with finger engaging knobs 15. Secured fast to each of the shafts 1 1, adjacent the outer face of the plate 15, are dials 16 that have thereon a plurality of suitable numerals that are adapted to be alined with a suitable mark as indicated by the numeral 17 in Fig. 3, thus by the movement of the shafts 14, the disk tumblers 13 are suitably controlled. g
The plate 10 has a. suitable depression 18 located, centrally thereof, the same communicating. with the several recesses into by reference nu.
which the disk tumblers 13 are positioned.
A recess 20'is centrally located in the plate 10 and communicates with the depression 18,
and a cavity 19, the latter being formed in the plate 11.
As is clearly shown in Fig. 2 each of the disk tumblers 13 is provided with a cutout portion 21. A substantially U-shaped shackle 22 is provided, one of'its arms, as indicated at 23, being slightly longer than the other. I A master tumbler 24. is secured on said arm adjacent its terminal. A polygonal cavity is provided in the late 10 into which the polygonal shaped end of the arm 23 is seated, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1. The arm 21' of the shackle 22 is mounted in a corresponding opening in the plate 11.
Patented Feb. '25 1919.
When the device is looked, that is, when the shackle 22 is held from movement relative to the plates 10 and 11, the disk tumblers 13 and 24 are positioned as shown in Figs. 1 I
and 2, that is, portions of the tumblers 13 overhang portions of the tumbler 24 and as the tumbler'24 is secured fast to the arm 23 of the shackle 22, the said shackle is held from movement. The lock may be readily. released by any person knowing the combination since it is necessary merely to rotate the knobs 15 thereby bringing the. combination characters on the dials 16 into alinement with the corresponding combination characters represented at 17. By this operation the cut out portion 21 in each of the tumblers 13 is moved adjacent the periphery of the tumbler 24, thereby permitting the free movement of the master tumbler out of the cavity 18 into the depression or cavity 19in the plate 11, thus moving the shackle as' is indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in'the form and construction of this device, without departing from the material parts thereof. It is therefore not wished to confine the invention to the exact form and construction herein shown and described but it is Wished to include all such as propto retain the latter from movement, and
means to operate the locking tumblers for permitting movement of the master tumbler thereapast and into the recess in the first said plate.
2. A padlock including top and bottom plates secured together and provided with central communicating recesses, a shackle o U-shap'e having one of its ends inserted through the top plate and terminating'in the recess of the bottom plate and being equipped with a master tumbler which fits in said recess, a pluralityof locking tumblers meters DONALD A. MoKAY.
