To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY V. CARSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Silverton, in the county of Marion and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sign-Painting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to sign painting apparatus.

The main object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed and easily operated apparatus of this character for carrying out what may be termed the shadow system of sign writing.

Another object is to provide improved stencil holding means for an apparatus of this character. 7

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the embodiment illustrated, a base 1 is shown composed of any suitable material sufficiently heavy to balance the parts of the apparatus mounted thereon. This base 1 has a recess 2 therein provided with a closure 3 here shown hinged. Mounted in this recess 2 is a battery i for supplying electric current to the lamp shown at 13.

A scale bar 5 is slidably engaged with the bottom of base 1 and is adapted to be mounted on any suitable support, the base 1 being slidable on the bar bar slidable on the base. A set screw 6 extends through the base 1 and is designed to hold it in adjusted position on bar 5.

Mounted on the fixed standard 7 is an extension member 10 shown longitudinally slotted at 11 for adjustably connecting said extension member 10 to the standard 7, to vary the height of an arm 12 which extends laterally therefrom and carries at its free end a light 13. A bolt 8 is carried by standard 7 and extends through slot 11 and a wing nut 9 onsaid bolt operates to clampingly hold the members 7 and 10 in adjusted position. This-lamp 13 has a shade 14 of non-reflecting material and thelamp depends from the lower face of the arm 12 to properly position it for casting its light over the stencil 20 which is used in connection with this apparatus.

Projecting laterally from the standard 7 on opposite sides thereof are two parallel arms 15 which carry at their free ends av bolt 16 which forms a journal for the sleeve 17 carried by the shank or stem 18 of the stencil holder, a wing nut 16' being arranged on one end of the bolt for clampingly securing the sleeve 17 in adjusted position so as to vary the angle of the stencil holder to suit the wishes of the operator.

The shank 18 carries at its free end a stencil holder 19 which is here shown U- shaped in form with groove 21 in the inner faces of its side members to form guides for the stencil 20 to. be used in printing or painting. The stencil 20 here shown has a letter H formed thereon, but obviously any other letter or design may be used.

A scale 22 is indicated on one side edge of the extension member 10 and is designed for obtaining the height of the difl'erent sized letters to be used, ranging from one and one-half inches to six inches, more or Another scale 23 is arranged on the upper face of the bar 5 and is designed for use in connection with spacing of the letters, the base 1 being slidable on said bar to properly determine the spacing desired.

While the extension member 10 of the standard 7 is shown and described in the manner set forth in the drawings, it is obvious that said member may be made telescopic or otherwise, to provide for the variation of the height of the arm 12 so as to position the lamp 13 at the desired point.

To successfully carry out the shadow system of sign writing, it is necessary that the lamp 13 have a light absorbing shade 14 so that the letters will be clearly distinguishlongitudinally on said standard and proable on the paper on which they are to beifvide'dmvith a laterally extending arm, an

In the operation of this improved apparatus, the stencil 20 is first inserted in the holder 19 and said holder placed at the desired angle by loosening the wing nut 16 and positioning the stencil holder where required. The lamp 13 is then adjusted so as to throw its light directly on the stencil to provide a shadow below it on the paper on which the-sign is to be written.

While a battery is shown used in connection with this apparatus, obviously one need not necessarily be used, as the wires WV may be furnished with connections to adapt the apparatus for use with direct electric currents if found desirable. A switch 4L is here shown mounted on the base 1 for turning on and cutting off the current and it maybe of any suitable or desired construction.

The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materialsdimensions, etc., as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the claimed invention. 7

Having thus fully described my invention,

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An apparatus of the class described comprising a supporting base, an upright rising therefrom, an extension" member adjustable longitudinally on said upright having a laterally extending arm with a lamp depending therefrom, a laterally extending member arranged below said arm, and a stencil holder adjustable Vertically on said member to position it at the desired angle relative to the lamp.

2. In an apparatus of the class described, a supporting base, a hollow standard rising therefrom, an extension member adjustable electric light globe depending from said arm, a light absorbing shade arranged over said globe, current wires connected with said globe and extending through said hollow standard, and a stencil holder carried by said standard and adjustable relatively to said light.

3. In an apparatus of the class described, a supporting base, a bar slidable longitudinally in said base and having a scale thereon, means for holding said base in adjusted position on said bar, a vertically adjustable lamp carrying member mounted on said base, and a stencil holder positioned below said lamp and adjustable to locate it at the desired angle relative to the lamp.

In an apparatus of the class described, a supporting base having a recess therein with a closure therefor, a bar slidable in said base, a set screw for holding said bar and base in adjusted relation relative to each other, a hollow standard rising from said base and fixed thereto, line wires extending from the recess in said base up through said standard, a lon itudinally adjustable extension member mounted on said standard with a laterally extending arm at its upper end, an electric lamp depending from said arm, a light absorbing shade mounted on said lamp, a pair of parallel laterally extending arms carried by said standard, a bolt con necting the free ends of said arms, a stencil holderhaving a shank with a sleeve at its inner end adapted to be journaled on said bolt between said arms, and means for clampingly engaging said arms with said sleeve to hold the stencil holder in adjusted position relatively to the lamp.
