Description

NITED sTATns PATENT carros".
JOSEPH HOLLELY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
FLUID-FAUCET.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 12,950, dated May 29, 1855.
To all lwhom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOSEPH HOLLELY, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Constructing Cocks and Valves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of a stop cock on line of Fig. 1. rubber valve.
My improvements consist in forming the barrel or inside of the cock or valve of any description with a valve seat eccentric on Fig. 3, is a metal faced which rests a leather rubber or other suitable elastic medium. The key or plug being also eccentric and bearing firmly against said elastic medium forms the stop when compressed by revolving into the position shown in the figure.
The construction is as follows: I make the exterior of any desired form. For t-he purpose intended a very common exterior being shown in the drawing. The barrel a has an eccentric seat on the induction side of the barrel at a. Over this portion of the valve or cock a leather b is placed which fits against it and when pressed down forms a tight joint. To bring this tight-ly against its seat and hold it there when the cock is stopped I employa key which is made of eccentric form as shown at c c. The lower end of this key c enters a bearing at the bottom of the barrel and its upper end is surrounded by a washer el, above which there is a packing box or packed joint e, through which the stem of the key passes, and the handle is thereto affixed by which it is turned. In the section Fig. 2 the key is shown as partially closed when it is brought around so as to have` the line a, e, across the cock at right angles. rIhe orifice is entirely closed by the compression of the leather upon the seat, the parts being eccentric. The wear of the instrument does not affect its usefulness as it merely requires the further turning of the key to make it bind. Then hot fluids or corrosives are used with this apparatus it is necessary to employ a substitute for leather. For this purpose I use vulcanized india rubber and as that material, would be abraded and soon be destroyed by the action of the key rubbing over its surface I cover the same on the side next the key with thin sheet metal as shown in Fig. 8, where T is the rubber packing, s the metal covering against which the key rubs. This packing can of course be used in all cases but is not necessary except where there is a material to be drawn that would injure leather. In turning the key back to open the cock there is a small projection p on the lower part of the inside of the barrel against which a notch n on the key strikes and prevents its turning too far.
Having thus fully described my improved valve or cock what I claim therein as new and for which I desire to secure Letters Patent is- The eccentric barrel having an elastic packing on it acted upon by an eccentric key in the manner and for the purpose set forth. I also claim facing the rubber packing with metal in combination with the above for the purposes above specified.
JOSEPH I-IOLLELY.
