Sewing-Machines, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had totheaccompanyingdrawings, forming part thereof.

This invention has reference to improvements in work holders for sewing machines whereby a hook may be sustained relative to the stitch forming devices.

One object of the invention is to provlde a work holder having hook receiving members fixed against adjustment.

Another object of the invention is to provide a hook sustaining work holder having a guide to guide the loops of sewing thread to the end of the hook whereby the loops of thread may be drawn beneath the end of the hook to the proposed stitching position all of the parts of the hook holder and its guide being fixed.

Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description.

The invention consists 1n the novel con struction of the work holder.

The invention also consists in the improved thread loop guide.

The invention consists in such other novel features of construction and combination of parts as shall hereinafter be more fully described and pointed out in the claim.

Figure 1, represents a plan view of the improved hook holder and thread loop guide permanently mounted on a carrier member of any known kind.

Fig. 3, represents an enlarged plan view of the improvement mounted between the arms of an ordinary button clamp, the thread loop guide being shown in section as on line 3-3 Fig. 2.

Hooks of the nature referred to herein may be of any ordinary construction but usually are made of wire bent to form the eyes a, a and the shank b which is bent at c to provide the hook d. It is also usual to Specification of Letters Patent.

provide the shank b with the hump e generally constituted by the wire extending from one of the eyes a, a and partially closing the space between the shank 6 and the hook member d. It is of course desirable that in attaching such hooks to material by stitches some of such stitches should engage the shank d asclose as possible to the bend c and the jmain purpose of the present invention is to facilitate such sewing and, at the same time, to avoid complications which arise from small devices of this nature having ad]-ustable or movable parts which may become loosened, in the operation of the machine or by the engagement of the thread therewith.

The improved device may constitute a substantially fixed part of an arm or member at Fig. 1 through which ordinary stitch forming vibrations of the work may be effected or the device may be adapted to be received by the arms B, B of any ordinary button clamp as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.

As shown in the drawings the improved hook holder comprises the plate 5 having the slot 6 furnished at its inner end with the socket 7 the width of which is less than that of slot 6, the outer end or mouth of said slot 6 having the flaring shoulders 8, 8. Fixed to the bottom of plate 5 is the thin plate 9 having the slot 10 the edges of which at the mouth of this slot extend inward beyond the shoulders 8, 8 of plate 5 to constitute supports 11, 11, for portions of the eyes a, a, of the hook. At its inner end this slot 10 has the tongue 12 which is beveled as at 13 and forms a bottom for the socket 7. Attached to the upper por tion of plate 5 is the guide member 14 which. extends in vertical alinement with and above the ton 'ue 12, toward the mouth of slot 6 sn lciently so that the slightly depending end 16 of its lower edge 15 may engage the end of the hook member (Z to assist in holding the hook in position and to prevent the entrance of thread between this edge 15 and the member d of the hook. Member 14 is of a length which insures the receiving of the loop of thread formed in the stitching operation and has the inclined guiding edge 17 which guides such thread loop toward the depending end 15 of this member 14: whereby said thread loop may draw between the hook member (Z and the shank 6 toward the sewing point 8 Fig. 4.

The wire hooks shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing have from their construction, a degree of compression which enthe side wires of'the shank 1) adjacent the bend c are compressed together to enable them to enter thesocket 7 and the tendency of these parts of the hook to expand exerts a frictional engagement of the same with the walls of said socket 7 which efi'ectually holds the hook in position. The eyes a, a of the hook are ordinarily sustained by the members 11, 11 of plate 9 and this plate may be sufliciently thin that the back of the hook is practically in contact with the material M to which the hook is to be attached.

The purpose of beveling the tongue as at Copies of this patent may be ob taln'ed for 13 is to avoid engagement of the end of said tongue with the fabric M when the work holder is shifted.

Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

A work holder comprising a plate having a hook receiving opening having a flaring month and a hook bend receptacle, 9. second plate secured to the lower portion of said first plate and having an opening the edges of which extend inward of said hook receiving opening to sustain respectively the eyes and the hook bend of a hook. and a thread guide member fixed on said first mentioned plate and having an inclined thread guide extending above said hook receiving opening.
