UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
PIERRE A. MAYOR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-COCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,485, dated July 16, 1872.
Specification describing certain Improvements in ater-Cocks, invented by PIERRE A. MAYOR, of the city, county, and State of New York.
My said invention relates to that class usual- 1 y called compression -cocks and the invention consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts, which have for their object to make a cheaper, better, and more serviceable water-cock than has heretofore been made, as will be fully set forth hereafter.
Description of the Drawing.
Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved Water-cock. Fig. 2 is a view in detail, showing the packing arrangement.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in both figures.
General Description.
which is cast hollow and with a val ve-seat, B. G\represents a plug upon a spindle; D, the
th )lu 0 being screw-threaded on its pe riphery, and the cock tapped to correspond therewith- E is the valve. F is the winch for operating the cock. G is the cap, which is screw-threaded to match the thread cut upon the surface of the cock, as plainly shown in Fig. 1. The valve E is made of wood or other material capable of being compressed, and is attached to the plug 0 by means of a spindle, screw, and nut, f.
The packing for the cock is arranged as follows: I put upon the spindle D a metal washer, d, and elastic washer, c. I then take a tube of cork, b, which has been made of the desired size internally and externally, and press it into the cavity or recess in the cap G, and force the spindle D through it, which prevents the cork from cracking or crushing. I have thustwo elastic surfaces together. The
(cork packs the spindle by compression there-j on, and the elastic washer 0 packs the spindle, and prevents the water from coming in contact with the cork packing, as the washers are clamped together by screwing the cap G upon the upper seat of the cock. I thus have a-packin g that is cheap, easily applied and replaced when desired, and the cost of the cock is considerably reduced. a
Iam aware that itis a common device to pack water-cocks with elastic washers with a metal disk interposed between them, an example of which may be seen in Letters Patent No. 110,292, and I lay no claim to such an arrangement.
Claim.
I claim The combination, with the recessed cap G and spindle D, of the packingwashers b c d,
constructed, arranged, and operating in the
