Be it known that I, MICHAEL N. TOMAS- Huwsiiv, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, resident of Chipman, rovince of Alberta, and Dominion of Canada, have in vented certain new and useful improvements in Gate-Operating Devices, of which the following is a specification.
rhis invention relates to improvements in operating gates and particularly to types used in connection with farm fences and the like.
The principal object of the invention is to provide means whereby a gate may be automatically opened for the passage of a vehicle without the necessityT for the driver dismounting and which will automatically close after the vehicle has passed through.
A further object is to provide such gates in forms which may be cheaply constructed and which are durable in use.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this specification and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a gate made in accordance with the invention.

Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the gate.
Arranged transversely of the roadway is a frame comprised of end elements 10 with which are engaged longitudinal bars 11, the upper surface of the frame being substantially level with the surface of the roadway so as to present no obstruction to vehicles or pedestrians passing thereover.
Rigidly secured centrally of the longitudinal bars 11, are opposed pairs of standards 14, engaged together at their eXtreme upper ends by cross-bars 15 in which are journaled shafts 16, the same extending through on opposite sides and having squared ends 17, to which a wrench or similar implementl may be applied.
`Secured to the square extensions are ratchets 19 with which the pawls or dogs 20 intersect. Mounted upon each of the shafts 16 between the cross-rails are the inner ends of coiled flat spiral springs 22, the outer ends of which are turned toward the standards 14, and rigidly engaged with the outer posts 25, of a gate comprised of similar in- Specfication of Letters Patent.

ner posts 26, connected by transverse bars 27, with which are engaged pales or stakes 28, preferably of the same type as is used in the fence between which the gate is erected.
.Rollers 30, are rotatably mounted upon pins secured in the upper ends of the posts 25 and 26, the roller being supported upon extended bars 31, secured to the standards 14, the length of the bars 31 being such that the gate elements may be drawn outward to the full width of the gate opening between the standards 14, the rollers sustaining the weight of the gate.
Secured to the outermost posts 25, are eyes 33, to which are attached cords 34, the same being operatively engaged with pulleys 35, mounted upon the outer ends of the bars 31, after which the cords run over similar pulleys 36, rotatably mounted upon the standards 14, the extreme ends of the cords being attached to platforms 38, arranged in opposed pairs pivoted upon the pins 39 to the longitudinal disposed frame bars 11.
Connected between the platforms 38, are links 40, having one of their ends bent at right angles and passing through slots 42, formed in the platforms 38 while the other end of the links are formed into hooks 43 engageable with pins 44, set in the platforms near their vfree ends.
In operation pressure being applied upon the platforms 38, upon either side of the gate as by a pedestrian or vehicle, the platforms are depressed, causing tension on the cords 34, which pass over the pulleys 35 and 36, separating the elements of the gate and opposing the action of the springs 22 so passage through the gate is obtained, and it will be evident that when passing olf the opposed platform, the gate sections will move toward each other under the action of the springs 22 which may be wound at any desired tension.
From the foregoing it will be seen that it is not necessary for a driver to get off the vehicle to operate the gate by hand in a usual manner, but by causing the vehicle or animal drawing it to step upon the platform 38, the gate will open automatically and close again after its passage.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a fence gate the combination with a rectangular frame, set in the roadway in the plane of the fence, a pair of standards secured thereto, bars attached to said standn ner-)esse ards extending in the direction of said frame, gate elements movable along said bars, a pair of opposed fiat coiled springs, secured to the upper portion of said bars one of the ends of said springs being attached to said gate elements, ratchets and pawls for adjusting the tensions of said springs, cords secured to the outer elements of said gate, a pair of opposed platforms pivotally secured in said frame, said cords being attached to the free end of said platforms, and links passing With their rectangularly bent ends through slots in said platforms, pins in said platforms adapted to be engaged by the other, hook-shaped ends of said links for causing said gate elements and said platforms to operate in unison.

In a farm gate, the combination With a rectangular hollowv frame, standards at the sides thereof, connections between said standards at their upper ends, shafts journaled in said connections, a pair of opposed Hat spiral springs secured to said shafts at their inner ends, ratchets and pawls combined with said shafts for adjusting the tension of said springs, pair of opposed gate elements movable in said frame, said springs being attached to the outermost of said gate elements, platforms hinged in said frame, connections between the free ends of said platforms, and said gate elements whereby pressure applied to said platforms, causes the gate element to separate, and means permitting' one of said platforms to operate independently of the other.
