CATTLE-GUARD.
new and useful Improvements in Cattle` Guards, of which the following is a speci ication. Y
This invention relates to cattle guards,
y and has reference more particularly to cat` tle guards of the type that are made from sheet metal and are formed with integral' teeth struck or stamped up from the body portion or portions of the guard. A cattle guard of the general class andl structural type to which the present invention belongs. is illustrated in Letters Patent to Bolinger, No. 1,156,856, dated October 12, 1915; and the object of the invention is to improve the utility and efficiency of sheet metal guards of the class shown in said patent, this ob]ect being attained principally by a novel construction of the tooth bars of the guard whereby a largely increased number of teeth for a Vgiven surface area is secured, and whereby also said teeth are more eectively and efficiently arranged or disposed over the surface of the guard. To thisend, a catm tle guard of my present invention comprises the various features and details of structure hereinafter described and more particularly defined in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be readily understood `and appreciated by those familiar with the art in which it belongs, Iv
have illustrated in the accompanying drawings one practical and workable embodiment thereof; and referring thereto- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a cattle guard of myinvention shown as applied. in use, a few only of the tooth bars being shown in full detail since they are all alike;
Fig. :2 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of one of the tooth bars; I
Figs. 3 and 4 are sectionson the corresponding lines of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates the ties and 6 the rails of a railway track to which the cattle guard is principally applied in service. As herein shown the complete guard is made in a plurality of sections disposed side by side, each section comprising a series of four parallel tooth bars rigidly connected in spaced relation. As the sec- Specification o f Letters Patent. Patented Feb, 18, 1919, Application inea october 25, 1917. serial No. 198,435.
tions are all alike, a Ydescription of one will suffice for all.
A designates as an entirety each of the tooth bars, the ends 7 of which are fiat and areriveted to transverse angle bars 8, these latter resting upon the ties 5 and being secured to the latter as by spikes 9. The marginal portions of each bar are bent downwardly to form underlying ribs or flanges 10, and these latter lit into transverse kerfs 11 formed in underlying angle bars 12, of which one or more may be used depending upon the length of the guard, the angle bars 12 serving as connecting and spacing members and also preferably resting uponthe ties 5. To lock the tooth bars A to the bars 1'2, the portions of the flanges 10 lying in the kerfs 11 are swaged laterally as indicated aft 10 in Fig. 4 so as to form a lock.- From the intermediate portion of the bar that lies between the flanges 10 there are struck up two rows of substantially vertical main teeth 13 and 14 of inverted V-shape, these teeth lying substantially in the vertical planes of the ribs or flanges 10.
The guard as thus far described is substantially the guard disclosed in the Letters Patent hereinabove referred to, with the exception that in the present instance the teeth 13 and 14 are of unequal heights, the teeth 13 being somewhat taller than the teeth 14, and with the further exception that the intermediate skeleton web portion is of arch forni instead of flat, this latter feature, however, forming no part of the present invention. My present improvements have to do with the structural form of the tooth bar itself, and consist of the features next to be described.
It will be noted that, as above mentioned, the teeth 14 are somewhat shorter' than the teeth 13. The purpose of this construction is two-fold. ln the first place, I have found that the guard is more efficient where the different series of teeth thereon are of unequal heights, and, in the second place, by making the teeth 14 shorter than the teeth 13, a greater width is obtainable in the limbs 15 of the zigzag skeleton structure that is created by the punching out of the main teeth 13 and 14, thereby rendering it feasible to punch out of the limbs 15 upwardly projecting auxiliary' teeth 16. These auxiliary teeth may be punched out of all of the limbs if desired, but I have herein shown them as punched out of alternate limbs, which 1s sufficient for all practical purposes. `These teeth 16 are somewhat lower than the teeth 14, and lie substantially midway between the main teeth 13 and 14. Out 0f the main teeth 13 are preferably struck a series of auxiliary teeth 17 that extend laterally of the teeth 13 Y on the outer side of the latter and preferably have an upward and outward inclination of lapproximately 45. I @ne `result oftheVforegOlIlg Structure 1s i that the number of teeth in a givenlsurface area of the guard is doubledas compared with the structure of thelolinger patent above referred; to, and consequently, the spacingof the teeth throughout the surface of the guard is Areduced byfapproximately one-half. Thisfeature, together with the featureof,theunequal heights of the different .series ofteeth, renders the guard `much more efficient not only for keeping` horses and cattle off the railway trackbutgalso` for preventing smaller hoofed animals, sueltas hogs and sheep, from crossing or trespassing onthe railwaytrack.. l\Ianif est ly,the auxiliary rteeth 17 serveto reduce the `Width of theV ture ofan intermediate row of teeth carried byithe webmember of the bar and` lying between the two rows of main teeth. The vpresent ,inventionis a specific embodiment 0f the broad invention disclosed and claimed in the said companion application.
I claim: l
