Be it known that I,ALEXANDER M. ALEX- ANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Transmission Devices, of whichthe following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specificatiomlike reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to machines foroperating upon stock and more particularly, to that classof such machinesin which the stock is Operated upon by a tplurality of separate and successively acting instrumenn talities while passi-ng `through the machine, the illustrative machine being an improvement upon that of United States Patent No. 1,078,664. Y I y The machine chosen for illustrative pur- Yposes is a leather` skiving machinesince the invention nds a practicable application in such a machine. It is desirable in leather skivino machines to start the rotation of the knife 2before startingthe actuation of the feed mechanism so` that the lmife shallbe revolving `rapidly when the stockis fed to it. It is also desirable, particularlylwhen skiving spongy stock or pieces having irregular outlines lto be ableto varythe rate of feed of the` leather without varyingthe rate of rotation of the knife.
According to one feature of the invention the shaft. which drives oneof the instrumentalities for acting upon thestock, for
example the feed roll,i has mounted upon it both a pulley for-driving` another instrumentality, for example the" skiving knife, and a power pulley, and means are provided for successively clutching the power, pulley to the driving pulley and the driving pulleyY to the shaft.
This and other features of the invention including certain details of construction and combinations of parts will be described in connection with an illustrative machine and pointed out in the appended claims.

feed disk 5 and disk-knife 7. The feed roll and feed disk are driven by gears and shafts as shown from a drive shaft 9, and' the knife is driven by a belt 11 from a pulley 13. The machine, except for the transmission mechanism, will not be describedin detail since its construction per se forms no part of the present invention and is suiiiciently described in Patent No. 1,078,664 which has been referred yto above.v It will be understood that the leather or other stock is fed.
by the combined action of the feed disk 5 and feed roll 3 to the rotary skiving knife 7 with the result that the margin of the stock is beveled. It will thus be clear that the machine is provided with a plurality of instrumentalities for acting upon the stock; first the disk 5 and roll 3 act to feedv the stock, and second the knife 7 skive the stock.
Referring now more particularly to4 F ig. 2, the pulley 13 which drives the knife is loose on the shaft 9 and is provided with two clutch faces, an internal clutch face 15 and an external clutch face 17. Fast to 'the shaft 9 is a clutch member 19 having a clutchrface 21 which is the'V complement of the clutch face 15, a ball thrust'bearing 23 being located between said member and the frame 29 of the machine. A stepped pulley 27 having a y hardened `steel or wooden button 30 tightly driven into its end is also acts to loosely mounted on the shaft 9said pulley `between the power pulley 27 and the knife driving pulley 13 is a weaker coiled spring 35. A pin 36 driven through the shaft 9 limits the movement of the pulley 13 to the right. A wedge-shaped block 37, vertically slidable in stationary guides and arranged to be moved by a treadle rod 39, contacts with the button 29. Depression of the treadle, not shown, by which the rod 39 is pulled down thus moves the power pulley 27 to the left against the force of the spring 35 until the clutch face 17 of the pulley 13 engages the clutch face 41 of the power pulley whereupon the rotation of the knife ofthe wedgeblocki? Vmoves both the power pulley 27 and the knife driving pulley '13' to the left against the force of the spring 33 until the clutch faces 15 and VillareenF gaged, whereupon the rotation of the shaft 9 and-conseguentlythe rotation of kthe .feed mechanism 'is started. It is thus possible by pulling down on the rod 39lto-'startztheknife and then the feed mechanism. It is also possible, by `varying the pressure of the clutch Vface 15 `upon the clutch face 21 lfto vary ethe rate of feed 'of the work without varying lthe rate of rotation of the knife, since-the vspring 33 is suiciently stronger than'fthe-spring- V35to prevent :separation vof the clutch "faces "17 and ll luntil after the clutch faces ,-15 and p21/have separated Hafvingfthus described my invention, what I Z'claim `as `new and desire to lsecure by Letters'Patent-o'f the United States is:
