In the manufacture of shoes having wooden heels it is sometimes desired to form on the sole a flap extending from the heel to the shank thereof, said flap being later bent down in front of the breast of the wooden heel which is subsequently attached to the sole; or it may ybe desired to split the heel portion of an insole and thereby forni a thin flap to cover the clenched ends of the nails which hold the heel in place or to provide a pocket for the insertion of a rubber cusliio The object of the present invention is to provide a machine which will accomplish these and similar operations; and to this end one feature of the invention consists in the combination in a machine of the class described of a splitting knife, means for grip-- ping the stock and forcing it against the knife, and automatic means for reversing the direction of movement of the grippingv means so as to eject the stock from the ma.

Mounted in the bearings in the frame 1 are two rolls 3 and 5. The lower rollis car-f` ried as usual by boXes 7 which are slidable out in in the frame of the machine and supported by springs 9 the tension of which vmay be varied by means of the screw bolts 11. A knife 12v of usual form is adjustably held in position byvbolts one of which is shown at 14. The upper roll is herein shown as rotatable ijn-fixed bearings, but it should be understood-that this showing has been made in order to simplify the drawings and that the machine may be provided,if desired, with means for adjusting it toward and from the lower roll, such adjustment being a usual feature of leather splitting machines. v
The shaft of the upper roll carries at one enda gear 13 rand the shaft of the lower roll a gear'15 which are arranged to mesh with pinions 17 and 19 respectively, the pinion 19 being connected with the pinion 17 through the shaft 21 and pinion 23. 'The pinions 17 and 19 will thus always rotate in opposite directions and impart rotation in opposite directions to the rolls 3 and 5. In order to cause rotation of the rollsv3 and 5 first to cause the stock to be drawn slowly into the machine and then to be rapidly ejected therefrom, the following mechanism is provided A driving'pulley 25 is provided with two ' friction surfaces 27 and 29, the surface 27 when operating serving to cause the stock to be drawn forward into the machine and the surface 29 serving to reverse the direction of rotation of the rolls and thereby eject the stock. For convenience, therefore, these surfaces will Vbe referred to as the forward clutch surface and the reverse clutch surface respectively. This pulley' is rotatable and slidable on'a bushing 28V which sur@ rounds'the sleeve 30 of a reverse clutch member 31, a spring 33 being interposed between said pulley and clutch member and tending to move vthe pulley toward the right and thereby connect it with said clutch member. The sleeve 30 of this reverse clutch member 31 is connected with the shaft 37 by a pin 35 so as to cause rotation o f said shaft.

The driving member or pulley'25-is vroi and 4 will therefore rotate in a direction to eject the stock.
Turning now to the forward clutch member 45, this member is rotatable on the shaft 37 and carries a pinion 47 which meshes directly with the large gear 43 so that when the forward clutch surface 27 is in engage ment with the coperating surface of the forward clutch member 45 the stud shaft 41 will be rotated at a comparatively slow speed in a clockwise direction and the rolls 3 and 5 will draw the stock slowly into the machine and force it against the knife.
As has been stated above, the spring 33 tends normally to force the pulley 25 into its extreme right-hand position. In order, however, to control the movement of the pulley, a wedge 49 having a bore to receive the shaft 37 abuts the end of a sleeve 51 integral with the pulley 25 and a second wedge 53 which abuts a collar 55 fast to the shaft is provided with a slot to receive said shaft whereby said wedge 53 may be moved transversely of said shaft. The wedges 49 and 53 are provided with an interlocking` tongue and groove connection as shown. The wedge 53 has a depending arm 57 pivotally connected at 59 with an operating lever 61 which is fulcrumed about a stud shaft 63,
I a spring 65 being arranged as shown to eX- ert an upward pressure upon the pivot 59 and thereby to raise the wedge 53 and allow the spring 33 to throw the reverse clutch into operation. A locking bolt 67 extends through a bore in the depending arm 57 and between two guiding lugs 69 carried by the wedge 49. This bolt is continually urged toward the left by a spring 71 so that when the arm 57 is pulled downwardly a sufficient distance the bolt 67 is moved to the left,the surface 670 of said bolt then contactingwith the under surface of the wedge 49. The wedge 53 is thus held in its lowermost position, and the forward clutch member 45 is caused to be operated. Fast to the wedge 53 is a stop member 530 having an inclined upper face; and a traveler 73, which is threaded on a screw carried by the shaft 37, has de-V pending arms between which the stop 530 is received.
The operation of the machine is as follows i/Vith the parts ofthe machine in the positions shown in Fig. 1, a sole is fed to the rolls and the lever 61 is depressed. Depression of the levermoves the wedge 53 downwardly thereby carrying the wedge 49 to the left and causing the driving pulley 25 to engage the forward clutch member 45 and therebyrotate the rolls 3 and 5 slowly in a direction to cause the stock to be forced against the knife. During this movement the shaft 37, it should be noted, is being rotated in a clockwise direction through the gears 23 and 39 so that the screw 75 is being unscrewed in its socket in the traveler 73, and the traveler consequently moved toward the right. Presently, at a time which may be determined by adjusting the nut 7 7, the traveler engages said nut and withdraws the bolt 67 from beneath the wedge 49 whereupon the spring G5 immediately forces the wedge 53 upwardly and permits the spring 33 to move the driving pulley 25 to the right so as to engage the reverse clutch member 31. rThis reverses the direction of rotation of the rolls 3 and 5 and at the same time increases the speed of said rotation so that the stock is rapidly ejected from the machine. Tt will be noted that the direction of rotation of the shaft 37 is likewise reversed so that the traveler 73 is now drawn toward the left thereby riding up on the inclined face of the stop member 530. This depresses the wedge 53 slightly until it occupies the position shown in Fig. 1 wherein the pulley 25 is disconnected from both the clutch members 45 and 31. The machine thus feeds the sole slowly to the knife so that a clean and accurate cut is made and then rapidly ejects it from the machine.
Although the invention has been set forth in connection with a particular machine it should be understood that the invention is not limited in the scope of its application to the particular machine shown r3 and described.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A leather splitting machine, having, in combination, a splitting knife, a table in front of said knife, means for gripping the stock and forcing it against the knife, and automatic means for reversing the direction and increasing the speed of movement of said gripping means to eject the split stock upon said table.
2. A leather splitting machine having, in combination, a splitting knife, a plurality of feeding and ejecting rolls, means for rotating said rolls at comparatively slow speed in a direction to cause the stock to be fed to the knife, and automatic means for reversing the direction of rotation and increasing the speed to cause the stock to be ejected rapidly from the machine.
3. A leather splitting machine having, in combination, a splitting knife, a plurality of feeding and ejecting rolls,means for rotating said rolls at comparatively slow speed in a direction to cause the stock to be fed to the knife, and automatic means for simultane- 130 ously reversing the direction of rotation and increasing the speed to cause the stock to be ejected rapidly from the machine.

A leather splitting machine having, in combination, a splitting knife, a plurality of feeding and ejecting rolls, a clutch member, gearing between said rolls and clutch member constructed and arranged to impart slow rotation to said rolls in a direction to force the stock against the knife, a second clutch member, gearing between said rolls and the second clutch member constructed and arranged to impart rotation to said rolls in the reverse direction, a driving pulley, and automatic means for disconnecting said pulley from said first clutch member and for connecting it with said second clutch member.
5. A leather splitting machine having, in combination, a splitting knife, a plurality of feeding and ejecting rolls, a clutch member, gearing between said rolls and clutch member constructed and arranged to impart slow rotation to said rolls in a direction to force the stock against the knife, a second clutch member, gearing between said rolls and the second clutch member constructed and arranged to impart rotation to said rolls in Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,y

6. A leather splitting machine, having, in
