To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. WrLKiNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Randolph, in the county of Cattaraugus and State of New York, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Pressure-Regulators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the invention, such as w ll enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pressure regulators, and particularly to that class of such regulators as are used for regulating and equalizing the steam pressure to multiple engines so that they Wlll operate in unison. l
The features of my invention consist substantially in the features of construction and arrangement of the mechanism herelnafter set forth and described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in wh1chz- Figure 1, is a view partially 1 n elevat on and partially in section illustrating my 1mproved pressure regulator. In these drawings illustrating my invention the frame of my devlce may be of any suitable type, and comprises substantially a Fig. 6, is a side view in elevation oi? the diaphragm mechanism support at its upper end with a fluid supply thereto, and .a valve mechanism of any suitable type, and connections to a fluid pressure supply, and connections suitable to distribute the fluid supply in the lower part of said frame.
The diaphragm case A is preferably supported on the top of a tube k, the lower end of which is secured to a yoke p, the lower end of which is secured to the top of the val e case 9.
In the diaphragm case A I mount a diaphragm section, (Fig. 2) comprised substantially of a peripheral section a, and a central section a, concentrically connected by means of wire loops a Resting upon the top of the part a there is a ring C, having an inner flange c which covers the holes a in the ring a, in which the loops a are secured, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.

which extends down through a central opening a in the disk a. On the periphery of the disk b there is a flange 6 which overlaps and' covers the connection of the wire loops a with the disk a, as shown in Fig. 1. On the top of the disk mechanism above describedflf secure a flexible disk N, preferably of rubber, or of other suitable flexible material, and above this disk N there is a steam pipe connection N, leading to a steam supply of maximum pressure.

Mounted on the tube In there is a spiral spring Z, the upper end of which engages the cross pin a, and the lower end a' washer o, resting upon an adjustin nut 71), preferably of hand wheel form, w ereby the tension of the spring Z can be adjusted. The washer 0 is preferably provided with ball bearings of suitable type engaging the nut b so that the operation thereof will not tend to distort the spring Z.
The valve 9 is of any suitable type, and has one end 9 of the case thereof open to the atmosphere. Opposite this opening I secure the inlet connection G, which comprises substantially a nipple 6 having a restricted inlet opening 6 through which steam or other fluid is supplied. This opening is preferably provided at its outer end with a perforated disk 7, which prevents impurities being carried into it and obstrucing the restricted opening 6. Between the restricted part 6' of the opening, and the valve case 9, the opening in the nipple c is enlarged, and the distributing device S secured thereto by a screw threaded joint, or in other convenient manner.
In operation steam or fluid is supplied to the diaphragm case A through the pipe N, at maximum pressure; and the steam is supplied to the restricted opening 6' at the normal working pressure at which it is desired to use it, and distributed through the connection S to the pressure controlled throttle valves on the engines which it is designed to operate; and when the operating pressure variesv at any time, the diaphragm mechanism operates to open or close the regulating valve as may be required to control and equalize such pressure and maintain it at its normal status.
' I have herein described my apparatus as utilized in connection with steam engines; it is obvious, however, that it can be used with equal facility to control the pressure and flow of gases and other fluids, as may be required, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In a pressure regulator diaphragm mechanism, a diaphragm support comprising substantially an annular disk having 'holes in the inner edge, a central -disk havthus described my invention so ing holes in its outer edge,and radial loops extending from the holes in the ring to the holes in the disk, substantially as set forth.
2. In a pressure regulator mechanism, a diaphragm case, a diaphragm mechanism mounted-therein comprising substantially an annular ring having holes in its inner edge, a central disk having holes in its outer edge, radial loops connecting the holes in the ring and disk, a collar resting on said ring, a central supporting disk resting on the central disk secured in said ring, and a fluid impervious flexible diaphragm resting upon said collar and central supporting disk, substantiall as set forth.
