IMPROVEMENT IN GRATERS FOR NUTMEGS, &c.
.Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,426, dated July 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. RIcKARDs, Jr., of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Graters for Nutmegs, Cocoa-Nut, Crackers, &c. 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand and make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part 0f this specification, in which- A Figure 1 is a front view of the device illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section in line w rv, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is an end view of the grater. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the ends of the grater.

This invention consists in a rotating grater and its shaft, so constructed that the grater is easily removable from the inclosing-box, and its interior readily accessible for discharge of the grated article. It also consists in a brush suspended from the lid of the box.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a box or casing; B, the rotating grater mounted thereon; and C, a chute, which receives the article to be grated and directs it to the grater. The grater is in the form of a hollow cylinder, consisting of the grater proper, which is secured to two end heads, A A, so that the grating-surface forms the periphery of the cylinder, and said grater is mounted on a shaft, D, passing through the heads, and whose bearings are on the sides of the casing p A. On one end ofthe shaft is fixed a pinion,
E, with which meshes a power or driving wheel, F, having a crank-handle, and designed v to impart rapid rotary motion to the grater.
The shaft rests freely on its bearings, but is prevented from lateral displacement therefrom by means of a confining piece, G, which may rotate or slide on the side piece of the box, and is to be brought against the face ofthe pinion E, wherebyywhile the shaft is held in place, removal thereof is readily accomplished by moving the confnin g piece clear of the pinion. In order to fully permit this removal, the shaft must be made removable from the grater.
To this end, the inner face of the head A of the grating-cylinder has secured to it a hook, H, which projects inwardly, and is arranged eccentrically on said head. A pin, J, extends angularly from the shaft D, and occupies a position sufficiently distant from the end of said shaft to engage with the hook H and yet not interfere with the axis of the cylinder. .In order that the shaft and .pin may be passed in and out through one side piece of the box A and head of the cylinder, the opening for the shaft is elongated as at a, to permit the said 'shaft and pin to be applied in position and be removed therefrom. One head, A", of the cylinder is confined in place by suitable pins and slots, so as to be properly secured and yet adapted to be removed whenever desired. K represents a lid for the top of the box A, covering the chute (l when the grater is not in use. From the under side of said 'lid is suspended a brush, L, which is designed to come in contact with the surface of the grater and clear it of the particles of the grated substance.
The operation is as follows: The box being placed on the table or a suitable rdish or receptacle, the lid and its brush are first removed, the article to be grated is placed in the chute C, and motion is imparted to the grater. Some of the grated particles fall from the outside of the grater to the receptacle below, and other particles pass into the grater. When all of the article is grated, the lid and brush are applied and motion of the grater continued to free the surface thereof of adhering particles. The confining piece G is now moved from the pinion E, the cylinder sufficiently rotated to cause the elongated openings a a in the side piece of the box and the head of the cylinder to register with each other; and by turning the shaft D so that its pin J clears the hook H, and withdrawing said shaft and rotating it until the pin J is in line with the elongated openings, then said shaft can be quickly removed. The cylinder is now free from the box or casing A, and by drawing out the head All the grated matter in the cylinder is accessible and easily discharged. To apply the parts in position, return the head A, place the cylinder in the casing, pass the shaft and pin through the elongatedopenings,
and when the shaft fully enters the opening in the head A and rests on its bearings on box A the piu J and hook H will engage. Then move the conning piece G in place and the parts are again in operative position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The casing A provided with an elongated opening, a, in combination with the shaft D', angular pin J, hook H, and hollow grater B having a removable head, as and for the purpose described.
