This invention relates to a car door :t'astoner and particularly pertains to a means for locking the sliding doors of freight It is the object of this invention to provide a car door and a fastener therefor so constructed that the car door cannot be pried open and access gained to the interior of the car without breaking a seal.
Another object is to provide a fastener adapted, when in itslocking position, to have a Wedge action and serve to tightly hold the door in its closed position against vibration.
Another object is to provide a sliding door latch or bolt adapted to be disposed at the rear lower corner oi a sliding door and to also provide a keeper cooperating therewith by which the bolt will be automati cally thrown into engagement With the keeper on closing of the door from its for- Ward end.
A further object is to provide 'means whereby the bolt, on being withdrawntrom the keeper, will be held in such position to end and which is adapted to release the bolt on opening of the door to restore it to its normal locking position. Other objects will appear hereinafter.

The lever 25 extends along one side of the flange 28 when in its normal vertical position; the flange 28 being of such length and depth as to substantially conform to and cover the side face of the lever 25. The lower portion of the lever 25 extends through the casing 20 and into a slot 29 formed in the bolt 21, the portion of the lever disposed in the slot being formed with eamfaces 30 and 31 adapted to engage the upper and lower ends of the slot 29. The ram face 30 engages the upper end of the slot on swinging the lever outwardly to lift the bolt as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and the cam face 31 engages the lower end of the slot 29 to hold the bolt against upward movement and also serves to force the bolt downwardly to cause its inclined face to bear on the margin of the opening 15 under pressure and thereby effect the desired wedgnw action. The lever 25 is held in its closed position by a. pivoted loop 32 mounted on the casing 20 and is adapted to extend over the upper ends of the lever 25 and the flanges 28 which are turned outwardly to receive it. Openings 33 and 34 are formed in the lever 25 ad-' jacent to its upper end at such point as to be disposed on opposite sides of the loop 32' when the latter is in its engaging position and formed in the flange 28 are open: ings 35 and 36 adapted to register with the openings 33 and 34.
When it is desired to seal the fastener the usual zinc or soft metal ribbon 37 is passed through the openings 33 and 35, and brought back through openings 34 and 3e astride the 100 32 as shown in Fig. 2; the

In opening the door it is desirable that the bolt on being lifted remain in its uppermost position out of engagen'ient with the keeper so that on disengaging the bolt no further attention to the fastener will be necessary; To effect this result the forward fag: of the bolt is formed with a verticalchannel 39 adjacent its lower end having an inclined wall 40 and formed on the interior of the casing 20 is a lug 41 which projects into the channel 39 and is adapted to engage the inclined face 40 when the bolt is moved to its uppermost position and cooperating therewith to shift the bolt rearwardly and dispose its lower end above a rib 42 extending along the rear margin of the opening 15. In order to permit the roarward n'iovenu-nt of the bolt in its guide casing the rear face ot'l'he bolt is guided against moved, the loop 32 lifted, and the lever 25 swung downwardly as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The cam face 30 engaging the upper end of the slot will lift the bolt which, as it nears the terminus of its upward movement, will be crowded rearwardly by the combined action of the lug 41 and inclined'face 40 so that the lower end of the bolt will project over the rib 42 as indicated in dotted linesin Fig. 3. On releasing the lever 25 the bolt will then seat on the rib 42 and will be retained in its uppermost position. The door may then be moved toward its open position whereupon the bolt will ride from the rib 42 onto the shelf 14 and down the incline 17, the bolt gravitating to its normal lowermost posirear edge of the opening) 15 will erowd the door forwardly and the olt and keeper are so arranged relative to the forward edge of the door and the jamb- 10 that when the door abuts lightly against the jamb the bolt will be near its lowermost position so that it will be necessary to forceit downwardly by pressing the lever 25 inwardly thus causing the door to be tightly wedged against the jamb 10'.
As a further means of holding the door against vibration a horizontal rib 45 is formed on the lower edge of the plate 19 and has an inclined face 46 adapted to wedge against the inner face of the flange 16 on the keeper when the door is in its closed position so as to crowd the door inwardly at its rearward end. This flange also serves to guide the rear edge of the door and the bolt to their locking position.
I claim:
1. In a sliding car door fastener, a vertically slidable bolt having an inclined sidev on the bolt, a gui 1o naeaooe 2. In a sliding car door fastener, a ver-- tically slidable bolt having an inclined side face adjacent to its lower end, a keeper having an opening one margin of which is adapted to be engaged by the inclined face e housing incasing said bolt, a flange on said housing, a lever pivoted on, said flange to extend parallel therewith, a cam face on said lever engageable with the bolt and adapted to force the inclined face of the bolt against the edge of the openin in the keeper, and a second cam face on said lever engageable with the bolt for lifting same on downward movement of the lever,
and means on the bolt'and housing for shifting the bolt to one side at the terminus of its upward movement whereby it may be seated on the edge of the keeper opening.
3. In a sliding door fastener, a keeper a bolt engageable therewith, and a lever shdab'l connected with the bolt and having an inc ined face for exerting a wedge action on said bolt.
4. In a sliding door fastener, akeeper, a bolt engageable therewith, said bolt engageable with said keeper to exert a wedge action thereon, and a lever slidably connectedwith the bolt and having an inclined face for exerting a wedge action on said bolt cooperating with the inclined face on the bolt to advance the bolt laterally in relation to the keeper. 4
