Description
A. WILL. METHOD OF MAKING CANDLEO- Patented Feb. 11
APPLICATION FILED-DEC. M1917.
ATTORNEY.
ANTHONY WILL, -OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE WILL & "BAUMER COMPANY, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK. I
METHOD or MAKING calm ems.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY WILL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Methods of Making Candles, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improved method of making candles, the object of which is to form the moldable, inflammable material around the wick by axial compression and simultaneous feed of both material and wick through a suitable die or mold so that the molding operation may be continu ous and progressive for any length.
Another object is to regulate the temperature of the inflammable stock during its formation upon the wick.
Other objects and uses will be brought out in the following description.
In the drawings Figures 1 and 2 are, respectively, a top plan and a longitudinal sectional View of a simple form of apparatus for carrying out the candle-making process, Fig. 2 being taken on line 22, Fig. 1 and showing the means for directing the wick through the apparatus preparatory to receiving the inflammable envelop therefor.
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are modified forms of dies adapted to be used in the apparatus for shaping the candle to the desired cross sectional size and form. V
The process, briefly stated, consists in passing a wick, as a, axially through a suitable die l and simultaneously forcing a moldable, inflammable material through the same die and in the same direction so as to envelop the wick and bring the enveloping material to the desired cross sectional form and size in one and the same operation.
The apparatus shown for carrying out this process comprises a tapered or conical shell -2- having means, as clamping screws 3, at its smaller end for receiving and supporting the die 1 coaxial therewith, the larger end of the shell being provided with a hopper 4' opening into the upperof and is rotatable within the shell and is Specification of Letters Patent. i Patented Felt. llll, 1919. Application filed December 1, 1917. Serial No. 204,810.
provided with spiral blades 6 constituting with the shaft a screw for feeding the materlal from the hopper 4 to the small and oflthe shell and forcing it through the The shaft 5 is journaled in a bearing 7 on the large end of the shell -2 and is provided with a central opening 8- through which the wick a,- is drawn from a reel -9 so as to protrude ,into or through the die 1. Y
The end of the shaft -'-5 adjacent the large end of the shell 2- is provided with a pulley -10 which may be connected by a belt to any available source of power, not shown, for rotating the shaft and its spiral blades -6 in the proper direction for feedmg the material from the hopper 4 to the small end of the shell and thence through the die 1.
The opposite end of the shaft and screw preferably terminates short of the die -1 so as to leave an opening in the die around the wick of full size for receiving and shaping the material which is forced axially therethrough by the screw.
During this operation, the material is compressed upon'the protruding end of-the wick awithin the die and thereby draws may be solidified sufiiciently to take the form of the die while passing therethrough and to retain such form after its exit, a portion of the shell -2 between the hopper 4- and die is surrounded by a temperatum-regulating chamber 11- having an inlet -12- and an outlet -13- for the entrance and exit of any temperature-regulating fluid, such for example as air, gas or liqui of such temperature as to produce the desired cooling or solidifying eflect upon the material passing'through the adjacent portion of the shell, the temperature of said air, gas or liquid being determined by a thermometer -1.
The opening, as 1 in the die may be of any desired cross sectional form, examples of which are shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 as round, square and corrugated, respectively.
What I claim is:
1. The herein described method of making candles consisting in passin a wick centrally through a tapered cham er and then continuously feeding an inflammable plastic material through said chamber in the direction of its taper whereby said material will I be compressed at the small end of the chamber around and upon the wick with sufficient force to continuously draw the wick along with it in the same direction.
2. The herein described method of mak ing candles consisting in passing a wick centrally through a tapered chamber and then continuously feeding an inflammable plastic material through sald chamber in the direction of its taper whereby said material will be compressed at the small end of the chamber around and upon the wick with suflicient force to continously draw the wick along with it in the same direction and gradually solidifying the material as it approaches the delivery end of the chamber.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of November, 1917. ANTHONY WILL. Witnesses:
H. E. CHASE, HOWARD P. DENISON.
