Abstract
329,652. Standard Telephones & Cables, Ltd., (Western Electric Co., Inc.). Feb. 21, 1929. Granulating - machines. - Spherical carbon granules are produced by subjecting a mass of carbonizable material in its liquid or plastic form to conditions which permit it to assume a spherical shape due to surface tension, hardening and then carbonizing the sphere. In an example, cellulose dissolved in a solution of zinc chloride is forced through a jet 6 by means of compressed air, and a revolving knife 8 breaks the extruded liquid into drops, which are hardened by falling through alcohol in a container 10 several feet in height. The cellulose pellets are removed when hard and are carbonized by heating in an inert atmosphere. Other suitable forms of apparatus are described in which the carbonizable material is broken up into small pellets by forcing through a jet by means of an intermittent supply of compressed air; this latter is obtained in one form of apparatus by means of a reciprocating plunger and in another by a vibrating ball valve. In another form, a stream of air is blown at right angles to the jet of carbonizable material and thus breaks it up into drops. In a modification of the invention, a synthetic resin is crushed and screened to give particles of the desired bulk, which particles are then placed on a surface which they will not wet, such as an oxidized metal, or asbestos surface, and are heated electrically. The particles melt and are immediately drawn up into substantially spherical form due to surface tension, after which they are allowed to cool and solidify. The products are carbonized by first heating for 20 to 30 hours to a temperature which continuallv rises from 70‹ to about 290‹ C.; after the preliminary stage which produces complete polymerization and hardening of the condensation products, the spheres are packed into carbon or graphite containers, and carbonized for about one week.
