' Be it known that l, JACOB S. `UR'DANG, la subject of the King of Englaiidf'andresid- A Signals, of ivhich'L-the"following isa full,
clear, and exact 'description, freference beingr I had tothe accompanying drawings.4
' "The 'obj ect of this Vinventiony is vto provide 'f af Asi'n'if'i-le eicient illuminatedsignaling device having afmovable larm normally car` rie'd Within' a casing and: adapted: to be proi Vjected*therefrom to indicate-'the vehicle is about to stop "orV turn. f to cause the arm to assume its outstanding suitable socket 21', shown as positioned by av bracket comprising an integral tongue 29; turned inwardly from the wall 1l. -This wall y11 is preferably cut away leaving an openingof the shape of an outstretched huma-n hand, the plate having integral projections 23 between the thumb and several Suitable wires 26 are shown as leading to the lamp 20, for supplying current thereto. The w1re is shown as suitably coiled to provide slack permitting the swinging of the arm without injuring the wire. l
vWhen the arm is within they casing, its lamp stand opposite an opening 30 in the side wall 6 of the lcasing in which is carried aysuitable colored lens 32, preferably red, so that it may obviate the use of a separate red '1a-mp at the rear of the vehicle. The lamp 20, bein normally lighted whenever darkj ness-ma es it desirable or necessary, throws its rays through the glass 24 which is preferabl not colored or only slightly colored, an through the red lens, thus notifying any 'vehicle in the rear of the presence and position of the vehicle' `carrying my device. If, -while driving the vehicle, kit is desired to 4 `stop or diminish speed for turning a corner,
' suitable controlling levers are operated, and 1f the rod 17 is connected with one of such levers, as for example, the brake lever, when the brake is applied, the arm 10 will be projected, as shown. This moves the lamp away from the position where it lights the red lens,` to, the outstanding position, when a .comparatively light colored illuminated hand" is then displayed, giving suitable notice, tol anyy drivers 1n the rear, of the con-l templated action of the vehicle.
. InV order to obtain access to the interior of the arm-10 for replacing the lamp or like purposes,.1 prefer to close the end of the hollow arm by the cover 34, hinged at 35 and aapted to be secured in its closed position by'a suitable hook indicated at B6.
The casing 5 is preferably somewhat wider than the arm. 10 to provide convenient space for the operating arm 17 and wires yleading lathe lamps, as well-as to provide for a separate compartment in which may be mounted a secondlamp 40. The inner wall of this compartment is formed by a parti-`4 f tion 42, extending between the side walls 6 Vand 7 and upwardly to a transverse portion 44 meeting the lower end of the edge wall 8.
,The compartment thus formed opens outvaily at the edge of the casing and is closed b a cover 45, shown as hinged at 46 to the e ge wall 8 and adapted'to be held in its closed position by a suitableciasp or hook such as indicated at 48. The cover 45 is provided with an opening opposite the lamp 40, fitted with a suitable glass indicated at- 50.
whereby the rays of the lamp may be projected to the side of the casing for any suitable purpose, as for example, the illuminat- Y 'rent to the lamp 40.
From the foregoing description it will-be seen that l have provided a signaling device, neat in appearance, eiiicient in operation and which may be conveniently attached to a vehicle. It is further apparent that when used with an automobile or like vehicle the device may serve a threefold purpose, that of theusual tail lamp, that of giving an indication corresponding to the signal of the driver when extending his hand to the side of the vehicle and that of illuminating the license number; f
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
k1. In a signaling device for vehicles, the combination of an uprightl casing having a closed front and back and one edge and open at the other edge, a hollow-rectangular siglarm is in normal position, and means for swinging the arm.
2. In a signaling device for vehicles, the combination of a casing having an open side, a hollow arm within the casing and of less width than the casing and pivoted to the easing in position to normally stand with one edge of the arm adjacent to the edges of the front and rear walls of the casing, whereby the edge of the arm substantially completes the closure of the casing, an operating member for the arm connected to it some distance back from its pivot, saidoperating member occupying the spiace between the arm and the e casing and projecting out closed edge of t of the bottom of the casing, there being a compartment within the said space, a lamp within the compartment, and aside windowl through the inner edge wall of the casing opposite the lamp and adapted to illuminate an adjacent license number.
3. In a signaling device, the combination of a hollow casing rectangular in cross section and having a parallel front and back 'and one edge, the rectangular hollow firm` pvoted Within the 'casing and having its rear Wall cut out to indicate a signal, a lampseoured Within the arm behind said cut our portion, said lamp projecting toward thefree end of the arm, a, hinged plate at the free end of the "arm adaptedzto close it or allow access'to the lamp, means for latching ,from within the the plate in closed position, and mechanism for. swinging the arm to carry the signal 10 casing to a point outside of it. v
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aiiix my signature.
