" BOTTLE-cnr nENovnn. v
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST A14].'S'1EIN- "nAUsER, a subjectof the Emperor of Germany, residing at Philadelphia',A` in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Cap Removers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates toimprovements in bottle caps of the t pe commonly made of sheet metal and employed for sealing bottles of various kinds, and
portions or interlockingprojections to enf 1s normally held The primary object of the present inventionl 1s to provide novel, simple and'inexpenslve means,
fixture of the c for'removing the same `from. the bottle without the necessity of employing lan .auxiliary removing device or opener.A
. A further object of the invention'is to proing the cap vide .a bottle cap'opener which will norproximity to the cap and bottle, in an out of the way position, and which .maybe adjusted for use to exert a powerful levera when desired, for removinan easy, convenient and expeditious manner..
The invention consists of the featuresof construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference beinghad to the accomvpanying drawing,
in wh1ch: igure 1 is a side elevation of the'neck of a bottle, showing a closure-cap embodying my invention applied thereto;
' with the cap an 59 a shoulder or into depressions plan view of the bottle, opener applied thereto; Fig. 3 is a view in elevation, taken at an angle to that shown in Fig. 1, showing the opening lever turned to an operative position for use.
eferring to the drawing, the neck portion of a bottle .or similar container, to which -is applied a metallic closure cap 2 of a type in common use. This cap surrounds the rim portion of the neck Fig. 2 is a to l, and is provided with crimps, corrugations or instruck projections 3 to engage under formed in the bottle neck for the purpose of holding ya Specication of Letters Patent.
particularly to metal bottle caps of that character having crimped` ormmg a permanent part or .swung in a vertical Atongue 8, which may be the ring one or more times,
`1 designates`- 9 is turned to a vertical Patented Feb.. it, i919.
. l Application led Marchv12, 1918. Serial No. 221,953.
' the cap in sealing. position. The cap may be provided, as usual, upon the interior thereof, with. any suitable type of sealing means to prevent leakage, such as the vusual disks-4 and 5 of cork `and paralined or oil paper, respectively. The vcap shown is lar bead or rim 6 extending above t e level of its crown portion and connecting the same with the depending flange .forming the body of the cap.
In accordance with my invention, the fiange or-body 7 yof the cap is provided at one side witha depending tongue or projection 8 integral with thel lower edge of the liange 7 and v'stamped or otherwise formed therewith. To this lug is suitably secnred an ofpening lever 9, in the form of a rlng of su ciently greater diameter than the neck l to surround the same and to be plane from a horizontal to a vertical position, as indicated in dotted lines in Eig. 1.' The ring of wire or other suitable material and may be pivoted or vsoldered at one point to the wrapped around to obtain greater security of connection. l
Normally, the 4ring or lever 9 lies in a horizontal position parallel with the lower edge of the cap and just below the same, and is adapted to be placed with the cap in such position upon the bottle neck when the capisapplied. The diameter of the ring but slightly exceeds the diameter of they neck 1,.this excess in diameter being just suflicient to enable it to be swung upwardly to a vertical position and to clear the cap in such movement. When disposed in the normal position stated, it will be evident that the ring will lie in close prox `lmity to the bottle and cap and will thus hands or clothes of a person handling the' bottle. When, however, the ring or lever position, it forms a handle whereby the tongue 8. will be straightened out to loosen the flange ofr the cap and permit/the cap to be readily and conveniently withdrawn from Vthe bottle neck. Where the ring or lever is fixed to the tongue 8, the rim 6 may be employed as an abutment which may be engaged by` the thumb of the hand of the operator,
-also of a tvpe having an upstandin annucis 9 may be made -f opener while the forenger engaged with the/ preliminary to the cap displacing action in a. ready and convenient manner.
It will beobserved that by the use of an of the character described, the necessity of employing a Separate opener will be avoided, and a morev convenient type of opener provided; one which is simple and cheap of construction and may be employed without materially adding to the cost of the cap, and one which will enable the cap to be removed in a ready and convenient manner.
I -Iaving thus described my invention, I
claim: o 1. A bottle cap havlng a ring-shaped capremoving member attached to the periphery thereof normally encircling the cap and adapted to be turned from suchpositlon to a position in a plane tangential to the pe.- riphery of the cap.
2. In a cap remover, a flanged cap having its flange provided at one side wlt-h a depending integral tongue, and a lever comprising asring of slightly greater diameter than the cap and normally disposed horizontally pbelow the cap, saidring being connected atone side with said projection and extending at its opposite side outwardly beyond the adjacent side of the cap, adapting 1t to be swung upwardly Jfrom the cap to l a vertical positionin alinement with said in aplane tanj tongue or projection an' gential to the periphery of the cap;
In testimony whereof I ax my Signatura AUGUST n. s'rnrNHAusEn.
