To @ZZ 'wwm it may ommen/n -Be it known 'that I, lvVumAM Ross, of South Pqrrcupine, in the Province of 'Untalro, Canada, .have invented certain new ,and useful. rnprovements .in Centrifugal Pumps, owhich the follnwin'g is zi speen.

For use with iluids having gritty metter in mispeniom it is neeessazy l@ make. the impeller of very hard material, which, there foret.. is not i'ezulily maeliinefl.' hul) of the impeller is Niere/fore provided willi. a. soft metal mi'e i2, which can 'eznlily be lmx'ml. ln'gvsezxlied :nifl {iefl on the sleeve 9. To preteen ne milenio? of the. ixnpeller fimn eonict will; ille. weten in lie main easing, l provide' lle pressure casing with elle-eli members zel, which nre preferably fomned sepziraie 'from lille cursing :ind are applied therein :is shown, being provided wii'li lips, Q5 enf fing ille miler eide of the piefssm'e easing .ns defining the posiien of the cheeks nell'. ve clieeto- These cheeks zii-e remm'ully l lrl in place e preferably by means of scmws threaded lill through the cover plates 7 Oli the main casing. lhere must, otl course, he a free running peripheral joint between the, impeller and the stationary member in close proximity to which it rotates. In the presentease, the joint being between the inipeller andthe pressure casing. or more properly the cheek nieinher forming part of the easing, to keep this joint tight withoutl undue wear I therefore provide the following )aeking means. An annular recess formed in one of the relatively movable parts, preferably the impeller as shown in Fig. 4, and in this recess is loosely fitted a packing ring E27. Pressure from within the impeller will act against the side of this` ring to crowd it against the far side ot' the annular recess, and thus maintain a tight lateral joint. Further, the pressure can ret beneath the ring and `ress it Out:- wardly against theI face of the c leek or pressure casing with which itl contacts. An absolutely tight joint; is thus readily insured. The packing rinet may he either simple or 0f a piece wound in s )iral forni.
(.onsiderahle dilliculty is experienced in centrifugal pumps in excluding grit'. from the shat't. neck rintefs.v gland packings and glands hereinhefore ret'erred to, and l have devised novel means for minimi/.ingJ the acccssihility ot' grit to these parts.
llet'errine particularly to Fig. l, il; will he seen'that the liinpeller at the inner le of the eye at each side is provided with an. axiallv and radially directed extension which terminates in a dish 2l). which prefierahlv extends into an annular chandwr 55u in the side ol thi: main casinf. and preferahlv Formed in 'the lace ot' the stalling linx which t'orins part of the end cover ol' the casing. lnto this annular ehaniher water is introduced through a pipe ill. which water majY he under pressure so as to cause an outward flow around the edges of the disk 125i. rl`he dis-lt ll will prelierahl;Y he provided with vanes Zhi. which. when the im peller is in rotation. will tend to draw water through the pipe Ill and expel it around the edge ol the. disk '.tl under pressure. When such vanes are employed it will he seen that. it is not essential that the water through the pipe ll he supplied under pressure. With this arrangcna-nt it is practically impossihle Vl'or grit to olitain access to the. haring surfacesI ot' the pump.
'l`he mode ol' operatioi'i ol the pump will he readily understootl from the ahove de-l scription. hut the method of obtaining' aecess to and of removing the worhing parts requires some further explanation.
The outer end of the shaft l is provided with a hole lil into which a har can he inserted and the .shalt -t rotated while the sha l't 2l is held from rotation h v the engage-` ment of its pulley 5 with a drivingr hell. 'lhe sha l't t may thus he unscrewed from its right hand inlet 2;).
engagement with the couplingr sleeve ll. The shaft may then he pushed endwise until it. is clear ot' the stallingr hox and gland. 'l`he cover 7 is then easily removed together with the stuffing box and gland. rl`he outer cheek 24 may then he lifted out and the inipeller and coupling sleeves screwed otl1 the shaft 3. The pressure easing may easily he removed by releasing one of the screws :t1 and with it will come the inner cheek piece il. By reversing the operation the parts are easil)r reassembled.
It will be understood, ot' course. that any of the parts in contact with the lluid and its suspended grit may he supplied with detachahle liners such as commonly employed.
In Fig. '5 I show a double pump eou- 'structed in accordance with my invention,
the main pump easing heilig divided hy a iartition, and an impeller and pressure cas ing provided at each side ol the partition. If the pumps are to he used in series, the outlet 23 of the pump at one side ot' the casing is connected with the inlet 2:! ol the pump at the other side ol the casingi hy means of a pipe 255. In Fie". T lI show an arrangement ol the connectionsh v means ot' which the pumps may he used either in. parallel or in series. Al. suction pipe lt is ln'anched to connect with the inlets .52 to the main pump raisin". and a discharge pipe ill' is luanched to conm-rt with the outlets .ll'l. 'l'hev pipe :l5 is' employed connected as shown in hi; l.
