Be it known that I, HERBERT E. Marennes, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bronxville, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification. f
My invention relates more particularly to centrifugal pumps and comprises among its objects; to construct a pump of the character stated so that the impeller may be removed from the pump casing without disturbing the impeller shaft or the pump connections; to provide, in a pump of the character stated, means for preventing the fluid entering the pump from flowing past the sides of the impeller; to construct a pump of the character stated which is easy to manufacture and ecient in operation; and such further objects, yadvantages and capabilities as will later more fully ap ar.
My invention further resides in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and while I have shown therein a preferred embodiment, I desire the same to be understood as illustrative, only and not as limiting my invention.
In' the drawings annexed hereto and forming a part hereof, Fig. 1 is an elevation of my new pump, showing the removable face thereof; Fig. 2 is an elevation substantially at right angles to Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of my pump to show the interior construction thereof; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the element used to close the side of the pump and to prevent leakage of iuid at the edges of the impeller blades.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, numeral 1 designatesthe pump body, 2 the pump inlet, 3 the outlet, and 4 the closure plate for the open side of the pump body, said plate being held in place by means of screws 5. The pump is supported on a suitable base 6. and has extending through one side thereof a drive shaft y7 which is suit ably supported upon the base 6. .This drive shaft is provided with a gland 8 and packing 9 to prevent leakage of fluid through the wall of the body 1 around shaft 7. The inner end of shaft 7 is screw threaded as shown at 10 for the reception of the impeller 11, which may be of the form shown or any conventional type adaptable to this machine..
Extending from the inner face of the plate 4 is a plurality of supporting members 12 which are secured to, preferable integrally, the centrally apertured plate 13. This plate may be thicker at its periphery than near the central a erture and may have its inward face inclined inwardly toward said central aperture, the co-operating face of the impeller being correspondingly inclined so as to fit closely.
It will be seen from the structure disclosed that this pum may be connected up to a source of supp y by means of the inlet pipe 2 and may have its exit pipe 3 connected to the pipe .through which the fluid is to be delivered and that when the pump is then operated fluid will pass through pi e 2 into the space between cap plate 4 and t e inner plate 13, then inwardly through the central aperture 14 of plate 13 and into the impeller. It will then be forced outwardly tangentially of this impeller by reason of rotation of the same and will be caused to go into the outermost edge of the pump body 1 from which it will escape through pipe 3. If some foreign solid substance should get into the interior of the pump, or for some other reason it should be desirable that the ump be opened up and the impeller remove this can easily be done by removing the bolts 5 and then withdrawing the plate 4 and .with it the inner plate 13. After ythis has been done it will be an easy matter to unscrew the impeller 11 from the threaded end of Shaft 7 and withdraw the impeller through the opening inthe side of the pump. It will be evident that this can be done without disturbing in the least shaft 7 or either of the connections 2 and 3. It is clear different means of connecting the impeller 11 to shaft 7 may be used and that the connection shown is selected merely as illustrating` these types of connection. It is of course understood that the specific description of structure set forth above may be departed from-without departing from the spirit of my invention asset forth in this specification and the appended claims.
Having now described my invention,
I claim:
1. In a pump, a pump casing havin an impeller chamber provided with a iui 1nlet and a fluid'outlet, said chamber being also rovided with a removable wall, said wall aving an opening which places said impeller chamber in communication with the fluid outlet, and supporting means for said removable wall secured to the pump casing, whereby said wall may be removed without disturbing the other pump parts.
2. In a pump, a pump casing havin an impeller chamber provided with a Hui inlet and a fluid outlet, said chamber being also provided with a removable Wall, and a c10- sure plate supporting said Wall in spaced relation thereto, said closure plate being removably secured to the pump casing.
3. ln a pump, a pum casing having an impeller chamber rovi ed with a fluid inlet and a fluid outliit, said impeller chamber having an opening in one side wall, said pump casing having an opening in register `With the first mentioned opemng, a removable Wall normally filling the opening in said impeller chamber, and a closure plate normally closing the opening in said pump casing and having means supporting said removable Wall.
4. in a pump, a pump casing having an impeller chamber provided with a luid inlet and a iuid outlet, said impeller chamber having an opening in one side `Wall, said pump easing having an opening register with 'the first mentioned opening, a. removable Wall normally filling the opening in said impeller chamber, and a closure plate nor mally closing the opening in said pump casing, said wall and said plate being connected in spaced relation by support members, said Wall also havin an openingwhich places said impeller c amber in communication With said fluid inlet.
5. In a pump, a body member having in one side thereof an aperture, a flange surrounding said aperture and adapted to receive a closure plate, a closure plate adapted to be secured to said fiange and carrying on its inner surface a plurality of supporting elements, said elements having at their inner ends a centrally apertured plate throu 'h which fluid may pass into the pump bo y, and an impeller rotatably mounted Within the pump body and having one face thereof closely fitting against said body and its op posite face closely )fitting against the oentrally apertured plate.
6. In a pump, a hollow body member having in one lateral face thereof an aperture, and having inlet and outlet connections independent of said aperture, an impeiier shaft extending through the Wall of the pump opposite the -lateral aperture, an impeller rotatably mounted in the pump body and removably secured to the impeller shaft and a closure member for the lateral aner- Certiiicate 0f said supporting means and adapted to co-V operate with t impeller.
8. in a pump having an inlet and an outlet, the combination ofa body, a side Wall, a shaft passing through said side vvali, an irnpeller in said body and on said shaft, said body having a lateral opening, a cover for closing said opening, and means extending between said cover and impeller and conw Vtasting said body for preventing leakage between said body and impeller.
9. A pump having an inlet and an outlet, the combination of a bod a side Wall, a shaft passing through said side Wall, an impeller in said body and on said shaft, said body having a lateral opening, a cover for closing said opening, a packing member between said body and impeller, and means connected to said cover and said member ier holding said member in place.
10. in a pump having an inlet and an outlet, the combination of a body, a side Wall, a shaft passing' through said side Wall, an impeller in said body and on said shaft, said body having a lateral opening, a cover for closing said opening, an annular packing member bearing against said impeller and inner face of said body, and supporting ele* ments on said cover and connected to said member for holding said member in lace.
11. In a pump having an inlet an an outlet, the combination of a body, a side wall, a shaft passing through said side Wall, an inipeller in said body and on said shaft, said body having a iateral opening, a cover for closing said opening, a packing ring having an inclined face bearing against said impelier and its periphery bearing against the inner face of said body, and supporting elements on said cover and connected to said ring for holding said ring in piane.
