To all whom it may concern:
NERY and ETHAN I. Doors, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay-Bolt Structures; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures and more particularly to the closure devices for the head of the staybolt,-the object of the invention being to provide a closure structure which will provide an eflicient inclosed bearing for the head of the bolt and to so construct the device as to permit quick access to bolt head for testing purposes.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a staybolt structure embodying our improvement. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2- 9, of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a view of a modified construction.
1 represents a bearing sleeve or member adapted for connection with a boiler sheet and provided interiorly with a curved bearing 2 which affords a mounting for the rounded or spherical head 3 o a staybolt 4.
A ring 5 is threaded on-the outer end of the bearlng sleeve 1 and constitutes, 1n effect, an extension of the latter,- sa1d ring having a tapering peripheral port1on as indicated at 6 and provided at its outer end with an inwardly projecting annular flange 7 which overlies the end of the bearing sleeve 1 and aflords a seat for an annular shoulder 8 in a cap or closure 9.
A ring or short sleeve 10, preferably made by drop-forging and having a taperrng 1nner face, is driven on the taperlng ring or hearing sleeve extension 5, and the said rlng or sleeve 10 is formed with a plurallty of outwardly projecting lugs or shoulders 11 having rear beveled or cammed faces. The cap or closure 9 is made (preferably by forging) with an annular flange 12 having Be it known that we, JOHN RocERs FLAN-"fj an angular exterior for the accommodation of a wrench, and said annular flange is provlded with inwardly projecting segmental shoulders 13, preferably having cam faces to engage behind the segmental cam shoulders ll of the ring 10.
It will be apparent that when the parts are in normal position, the cap 9 will be clamped tightly against its seat and the head of the bolt will be inclosed,it being of course understood that the cap or closure 9 will have such internal configuration as to provide a clearance space 14 for the head of the bolt. By turning the cap or closure 9 a short distance, the segmental shoulders 13 will be moved out of line with the segmental shoulders 11 and the cap or closure can then be removed to expose the head of the bolt for testing purposes. It is apparent that said cap or closure may be as quickly replaced and locked in position.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 3, the separate ring or extension 5 is omitted and the bearing sleeve is provided with an integral extension 15 to serve the same purpose as the ring 5,said integral extension being made with an exterior tapering face to receive the internally tapering ring 10 and the end of said bearing sleeve extension 15 being provided with a seat 16 for the cap or closure. In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 1, the cap or closure is made dome shape and its flange 12 is adapted for the reception of a wrench, while in the form shown in Fig. 3, the cap or closure is provided with an angular head 17 to receive a wrench.
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. In a stay'bolt structure, the combination with a bearing member provided with an extension having an exterior tapering wall, of a ring having an interior tapering wall engaging the exterior tapering wall of said extension and provided with segmental shoulders, and a cap or closure provided with segmental shoulder to cooperate with the segmental shoulders on said bearing member extension.
