a citizen of the United States, residing at improvements in over-seaming mechanism for sewing machines and more particularly a; the mechanisms for operating the looper and spreader. a Y a An object of the invention-is to provide a sewing machine of the above character with mechanisms for operating the looper and spreader wherein a greater portion of sewing machine having a supporting bed 1 the operating parts are housed within the standard of the sewing machine,
A further object of the invention is to provide a machine of the above character withmec hanism for operating the looper wherein said looper may be given a dwell at the forward end of its stroke and wherein the actuating shaft for the looper extends transversely of the standard and is connected to said looper from the rear side of said standard. 7 i i r i v These and other objects-will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed.

The invention isshown as embodied in a carrying ahollow standard 2 having an and connected by a link 9 to the needle bar. Said needle lever 7 is oscillated by a link 10 which cooperates with an eccentric. on the main shaft 11 of the machine. The material to be stitched is carried by a work support 12. A presser foot 13 holds the ma terial on the work support and a feed dog 14 advancesthe material over the work sup port. Said feed dog is carried by a feed ar 15 which is raised and lowered by a suitable cam or eccentric on the main shaft 11 and this feed bar is moved back and forth by an eccentric strap 16 which is con nected to the feed rocker at the rear side of the machine. The feed bar 15 is also pivoted to said feed rocker. These partsare of the usual construction and will not need further description. i
Cooperating with the needle beneath the work support is a thread carrying looper 18. Said thread carrying looper is fixed to the forward end of a rock shaft 19 mounted in suitable bearings 20 and 21 carried by the supporting bed of the machine. The standard 2 as above noted is hollow and has an inwardly projecting '"IbQSS 27 which forms a bearing for the cross shaft 26. Said cross shaft 26 at its inner end and. within the hollow standard is provided with an arm 28 which is securedtothecross-shaft by a screw 29. This arm 28 is carriedby a link 30 with the needle lever-extension '31. As the needle lever extension oscillates it will impart an oscillation to the shaft' 26 and. this will move the-link .24 back and forth and1thus-rock*the looper.

The other arm ofthe lever is connected by an eccentric strap 44 and this eccentric-strap cooperates with an eccentric on the main shaft 11. The spreader is provided with a forked end 45 and also with a spreading "finger 46. This spreading finger is disposed in rear of the needle, and the needle on 'its downward stroke holds itsown threadover the spread ingflfinger and this prevents .the previously locked loops from becoming slack and assists in 'the formation of the stitches. When the spreader is at the'lower end of its stroke the link 36 and the arm 37 are substantially in alinement and this Wlll glve a dwell to the spreader at this time.
As clearly shown in Fig. 5 the spreader when at the lower end of its stroke is ust -;below the pathuof movement otthe looper.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is a i :1. A sewing machine comprising in combination, a work support, a hollow standard carrying anoverhanging" arm, a needle reciprocating at the free end of saidoverhanging arm, a needle lever for reciprocatingsaid needle, a looper cooperating with the'needle beneath the'work support, a cross shaft mounted in a suitable bearing in said standard, an arm carried by said cross shaft and located in rear of the standard, a link actuated by said arm for oscillating said looper, a second arm carried by said cross shaft and located within said hollow standard, a link connecting said second arm with an extension on the needle lever, said link and said needle lever extension being so positioned as to move substantially into alinement when the looper is at the forward end of its stroke for giving a dwell thereto.

A sewing machine comprising in combination, a work support, a hollow standard carrying an overhanging arm, a needle reclprocating at the free end of said overhangino' arm, a needle lever for reciprocating said needle, alooper cotiperating with the needle beneath the work support, a cross shaft mounted in a suitable bearing in said standard, an arm carried by said cross shaft and located in rear of the standard, a link actuated by said arm for oscillating said looper, a second arm carried by said cross shaft and located within said hollow standard, a link connecting said second arm with an extension on the needle lever, said link and said needle lever extension being so positioned as to move substantially into alinement when the looper is at'the forward end of its stroke for giving a dwell thereto, a spreader cooperating with the looper beneath the work support and with the needle above the work support and means for oscillating said spreader.

A sewing machine comprising in combination, a hollow standard, an overhanging arm. carried thereby, a needle bar carrying said needle and reciprocating in said overhanging arm, a needle lever for reciprocating the needle, said needle lever having an extension extending into said hollow standard, a work support, a lever coiiperating with the needle beneath the work support, a cross shaft mounted in a suitable caring in one wall of the hollow standard, means located within the hollow standard for connecting said cross shaft to the needle lever extension and means for oscillating the looper from the outer end of said cross shaft, a spreader cotiperating with the looper beneath the plane of the work support and with the needle above the work support, a rock lever mounted in said hollow standard, means within said hollow standard for actuating the rock lever and devices for connecting the said rock lever with said spreader for oscillating the same, said devices for oscillating the spreader including toggle links movable substantially into alinement when the spreader is at the rear end of its stroke.
