Zurich, Switzerland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Flushing Devices with Air-Tight Vessels for Water-Closets, of
which the following is a specification.

When the pressure in the air-tight vessel attains a certain value, the water exit 'of the vessel is automatically opened by the action of the pressure on a stepped piston in such a manner that, when the inflow of water into said vessel has been stopped by closing the main valve, the vessel is brought into connection with the flushing pipe.
The primary object of the present invention-is the provision of a flushing device of the said class in which the construction and arrangement of the water inflow and outflow valves, and of the air-tight vessel, is modified and simplified insuring the automatic action of the flushing device under any condition.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which objects will appear as the description proceeds, the invention will be found to reside in the combination and arrangement of parts, and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed. It will be understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made without departing from the scope of the invention.

Figures 1 and 2 show a flushing device in sectional elevation, the piston being shown in two diflerent' positions.
The flushing device comprises a cylindrical air-tight vessel 1 which may bemade of suitable sheet metal. This vessel is provided at its ends with sockets 20 and 21, respectively. A valve case 2 is screwed into theupper socket 21, and is provided with a branch 3 by means of which the flushing device is connected to a water main in any suitable manner, not shown in the drawings. ranged and are held in position by two rings 23 and 24 screwed in the casing 2. The orificeof thebranch 3 is situated between the rings 5 which rings, coacting with the piston 4, serve to govern the outflow of water from the main. The piston 4, which is a stepped piston, is provided with a lower part 25 and an upper part 12, the diameter of the upper part, which is provided with a neck 6, being slightly larger than that of the lower part 25.
The piston 4c which is hollow, is open at the top and bottom and is rigidly connected to a stem 7 of a knob 9 thus serving as a handle by which it may be manipulated.
The stem 7 which is slidably arranged in a cap 8 of the casing 2 is hollow and communicates with the interior of the piston 4 by means of holes. The knob 9 is provided with holes 10 by means of which the airtight vessel communicates with the atmos- This knob is screwed on the stem 7 V and the piston 41 rests, by means of the knob 9, on the cap 8. The lowest possible position which the piston l may assume (see Fig. 1) depends on the position of the knob 9 and the stem 7. The latter is further provided with a collar 11 which strikes against the cap 8 when the piston moves upward thereby limiting the upward movement of the piston 1.
At the lower end of the vessel 1, in the socket 20, a valve case 22 is arranged in which a ring 16 of flexible packing material is held by means of a ring 27 screwed into said casing. The rings 16 coacting with the lower end of the piston 1 serve as an outflow valve for the air-tight vessel. In the socket 20 a guide 17 is provided for the lower end of the =pisto11 & which guide consists of a piece of tube, tapering at the upper end and fixed with the lower end in a slotted disk 29 screwed intosthe casing 22. On the socket 20 the flushing pipe 15 leading to the water t remains in the assumed position, in view of its weight until the pressure in the vessel has attained a certain value which is sufficient to overcome the resistance; It then opposes the upward movement of the piston 4: and lifts the latter by the excess of pressure on the surface of the upper larger part 12 of the piston 4.
The piston l in rising closes the connection between the vessel 1 and the branch 3 and immediately thereafter opens the outflow opening at the bottom of the vessel. The water issues under pressure and no loss of energy occurs as no deviation ofthe issuing water takes place. After the given quantity of water has finished flowing, the flushing device remains in the position formally described, the vessel 1 being 'at all times empty. Leak water which may pass along the ring 5 flows of]? through holes 14: either inside or outside of the piston.-
It is evident that various changes may be made in the form and arrangement of parts but what I claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A flushing deviceior water closets including a tank, an inlet opening at the upper end of the tank, and an outlet at the bottom of the-tank, valves provided for each of said openings of which the lower isnormally open and the upper one closed,land means for actuating said valves whereby to close the outlet and open the inlet valves, and further means for automatically closing the inlet and opening the outlet valve when the tank is nearly filled with water.
2. A flushing device for water closets in cluding a tank, an inlet opening at the 1 pper end of the tank, and an outlet atthe bottom of the tank, valves provided for each of said openings of which the lower is normally open and the" upper one" closed and means for actuating said valveswherehy to close the outlet and open the inlet valves, such means-including a single valve stem extending through the tankand projecting beyond the outer-end -.ofthesamev and terminating at this end in an operating handle, and K turther means :if'or automatically olbsing the inlet andopeningthe outlet valves when the tank-isnearly filled; I 1
3. A flushing device for Waterclosets including a-tanlv, an inlet opening at theupper end of \the'tank and an outlet at the bottom of the tank, valves provided for each of said openings ofwhich the lower is,
normally openand the upper one closed, and means for actuating saidvalveswhfilzby to close the outlet and open the inlet valves whereby to permit water to rise in said tank, the upper of said .valves beingqprovided with an enlarged valve stemabove the valve, against which enlarged portion the pressure will be exerted, WhlClI-PJFGSSIIIG is transmitted to confined air within said tank by the rising-t watertherein, whereby to move the valve-stemto close the inlet; and open the outlet valves when the tank is nearly filled.
