and has for one of its objects to form the major portion of the body from a single section of material or plank whereby the sides, handles and the cleats for supporting Y the ends of the body, may be cut therefrom Without appreciable waste of material.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having a stay member extending between the handles and supporting and reinforcing the latter.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims; and in the drawings illustra tive of the preferred embodiment of the invention Figure 1 is a view of the plank or board from which the sides, handles and cleats of the body portion of the vehicle are constructed.

The body portion of the improved device including the sides, handles, and the cleats whereby the ends of the body are retained in position, are formed from a single section or board without appreciable waste of material, as illustrated in Fig. 1. To construct the sides, handles, and cleats, the section of material is divided intermedite its ends, first by sawing or otherwise forming clefts 10 at right angles to the opposite side edges of the body and in spaced relation, and then connecting these clefts by a plurality of other clefts indicated at 11. By this means the side portions of the body of the cart, represented at 12-13, are produced with projections 14-15 extending respectively from the inner ends of the side portions and constituting the handles of the body. The clefts 11 produce a plurality of strips which when severed transversely intermediate their ends form the cleats, in-

dicated at 16, whereby the ends 17-18 of the body are supported in position relative to the sides. In laying out the lines for the production of the clefts the distance between the shorter clefts 10 is a trifle greater than-twice the height or vertical distance of the sides 1213 50 that after the strips are produced they may be cut into the required lengths.

After the sides have been produced by the saw cuts above noted the smaller reduced ends of the members 1415 are rounded to form hand grips as indicated at 1920. The bottom member of the body is represented at 21 and bearing beneath the bottom 21 near its ends are transverse cleats 22-23. Formed in the inner faces of the sides 1213 beneath the cleats 16 are cavities or seats, indicated at 35, to receive eye bolts 36 which are thus embedded in the cavities and covered by the cleats 16. Clamp bolts 37 extend through the sides 12-13, the cleats 16 and the eyes of the bolts 36, as shown.

The bolts 36 extend downwardly through the bottom 21 and the transverse cleats 22 and are threaded to receive binding nuts 38. By this means the sides and bottom are firmly coupled together, and readily separable, when required. Transverse tie rods 2 125 extend through the sides 1213 near their upper edges, and likewise through the cleats 16 externally of the end member 18, and internally of the end member 17. By this arrangement the end member 17 may be removed to discharge the load and leave the tie rod 25 intact to support the sides 1213 and prevent outward displacement under the lateral strain of the load.

Extending between the handle members 1415 near the grip portions 19-20 is a tubular stay member 26. Extending through the handles 1415 and into the stay mem ber 26 are rods 2728, the rods having eyes at their inner ends to receive holding pins 2930 which extend through the tubusimply constructed cart member is produced without appreciable waste of material. It will be noted by referenceto Fig. 1 that practically the only waste of material occurs at the terminals of the cleft 11- asindicated Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:

1. A vehicle body including parallel sides in spaced relation and each having a handle formed integral therewith and extending longitudinally from one end thereof, a tubular stay member extending between the outer ends of said handles, holding devices ex tending throughthe handles and into the tubular stay member and having eyes at their inner ends, holding pins engaging through said stay member and through said eyes, and means for exerting a longitudinal pull on said holding devices.

' 2. A vehicle body including a bottom, spaced sides supported on the bottom and having their inner faces cut away to form vertical seats, transverse cleats disposed beneath the bottom, vertical guide cleats attached to the inner faces of said sides and forming closures for the adjacent seats, end members supported by said cleats, bolts housed within said seats and having their upper ends provided with eyes and their lower ends-extended through said bottom and transverse cleats, clamp bolts extendin through said sides, guide cleats and eyes o f the bolts, and clamp nuts engaging said eye bolts and bearing against the transverse cleats for exerting a longitudinal pull on said eye bolts.
