TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
' Patented Feb. 4, 1919.
Application led August 12, 1918. Serial No. 249,412.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JUDsoN DUNLOP, a citil zen of the United States, and resident of Floral Park, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to typewriting machines, and my improvement is directed to means for inclosing the keyboard when the machine is not in use, and means for locking the spacer and shift keys in depressed positions, in order that no unwarranted use may be made of the keyboard, for operation of the type-bars, and also to prevent longitudinal displacement or movement of the paper carriage.
Therefore my invention consists of a hinged device, independent of the machine,
adapted to fit over and embrace the keyboard of a typewriting machine, and to be locked thereto, to prevent its unauthorized removal.
Thus the finger keys are rendered inac` cessible, and cannot be operated.
The device has integral members, which, when the 4device is closed about the keyboard, engage with portions of the machine frame, and with the rear row of keys, to thus enable said device to be placed in fitting relation ,about said key-board, so that said device may not be shifted from the keyboard in any direction. Then, by locking together the hinged members of the device, it is secured in that fitted relation about the key-board. Also, the upper, hinged member of the device is provided with depending blocks, so positioned, respectively, to deway of example, it being adapted, with slight modifications in design, to apply to the key-board of other makes of typewriting machines.
In the present example, let 1 indicate the machine frame, composed of horizontal side bars 2 at the base and inclined side bars 3, said bars 2 and 3 merging forwardly, and having front frame bar 4. The finger keys for the type bars are shown at 5, spacer key at 6, shift key at 7, and back space key at 8. The carriage is indicated at 9, having platen 10.
My improved key-board cover consists of the members 11 and 12, which are hinged together at 13, so that they may be opened out to fit over embracingly and be removed from the key-board; and be closed together about said key-board, to encompass it.
The lower member 11 of the device is a frame having the base 14, front Wall 15, and side walls 16, the `latter increasing in the rearwardly upward angle of the bank of keys.
The top member 12, which is hinged at one side, by hinge 13 to the top of a side wall 16 of member 11, has at its opposite side a depending flange 17, to take over an adjacent wall 16 of member 11, in closing thereon, and also has a depending, rearward flange 18, to engage behind the rear row of linger keys of the key-board, to thus prevent removal forwardly of the device when fitted in engaged position.
The upper member 12 has a block 19 depending from its under surface, so located thereon as to lie directly over the spaced key when the device is adjusted in position, said block 19 serving to depress the spaced key to the limit of its downward movement. Thus the spacer key is held against movement. Further, the member 12 is similarly provided on its under surface with blocks 20, so positioned as to lie, respectively, over the shift and back space keys, to depress and lock them, and thereby to prevent movement of the carriage both vertically and longitudinally.
Obviously, with machines having different arrangements of tabular and other finger keys included in the key-board, various combinations of keys may be depressed to eff ct the locking means aforesaid; therefore t e arrangement of blocks 20 herein shown is ber 11 may be provided, on their inner sur-y faces, with hooks 25, so arranged as to engage with and bind upon the side barsv 3 of thekey-board frame, while the base 14 of said member 11 bears against the under surface of the horizontal side bars 2 of said frame.' The relative spacing between the base 141 and hooks 25 is such that these members fit snugly against the side bars 2 and 3 -when the member 11 is thus slidingly adjusted in position upon the machine, prior to closing down the member 12 thereon.
Variations may be resorted to within the spirit and scope of my invention, and parts thereof used without others.
I claim 1.V A freelyremovable device for inclosing` thev key boards of typewriting machines, comprising upper and lower members, hinged together at one side and adapted to be embracingly litted about a key board, to
inclose the finger keys thereof, and means for locking said members together at the si'defthereof oppositetheir hinged side.
2. In a devcefor inclosingthe key-boards of typewriting'machines, in combination, a
lower member to lie beneath a key-board, means upon saidlower member to engage with the machine frame, an upper member hingedV at one side to said lower member and adapted to close upon the key-board and said lower member, means upon said upper member to engage in its closed position with a row oil? keys, to prevent forward withdrawal, Vand locking means Jfor said lower and upper members, when closed.
3. In a device orinclosing the key-boards of typewriting machines, in combination, a lower member to lie beneath a key-board, an upper member hinged at one side to said lower member and adapted to close upon the key-board and said lower member,-means upon said upper member to engage in its closed position with a row of keys, to prevent forward withdrawal, and locking means for said lower and upper members, when closed.
4. In a device for inclosing the key-boards oftypewriting machines, in combination, a lower member to lie beneath a key-board, an upper member to lie over the key-board, covering the finger-keys, means upon the under surface 'of said upper member to 'depressingly engage some of said nger keys and thus prevent actuation of the carriage, and means for securing said members together embracingly about said keyboard.
Signed at borough of Manhattan in the city, county and "Stateof New York this 9th day of August, A. D. 1918.
