Patented Aug. 26, 1913.
Application led August 28, 1811. Serial No, 648,395T Y To all wfiom t mm] concer/a:
Be it 'known that I, J oHN citizen of the United States, residing-at Litoi' Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful' improvements in T 'pe-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specication containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
, My invention relates to an improved shift l key mechanism and consists in the novel construction hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended cla-im; v
The object of my invention is to provide an improved. shift key mechanism, whereby a single set of keys may be used to control type-bars of both the upper a d lower cases, thereby obviatinguthe ,necessity of a large number of keys when separate type-bars are used for the upper and lower cases, and also obviating the necessity of placing the upper and lower case types on a single type-bar.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view. of a portion of a key-board of a typewriting machine having my invent-ion 'applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same, the section being taken lon the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 lisaJIM front elevation ojf two type-bars depending in noiiiial position.
`ln carrying out my'invention I may applyA the same to any common typewriting' h machine now' in use, ,m king use of the usual frame 1, indicatefb ottedlines in Fig. 1, and having the usua key-,board 2 fitted with the usual set of keys V`3.' I haveillustrated only ther-essential portions ofthe ,typewriting machine in orderfto economihe 1n draft ,49 ing space. Y
In `practice there are the iisual radially arranged set of type-bars 4 and 5 which marryrespectively the lower and upper case f "t MiV riiounted u I on the at 8 and connected ',hy pull-ro s 9 to the usal hell-cranks 10.
" The numerals 11 and illa4 designate the upper .and lower case horizontal ull-rods connected at one end to the said be l-cranks 50 10 and having on their opposite-ends heads on shoulders 12 mountedto slidelooselyin bearings formed in the frame piece 13. The stems of the keys -3 pass downwardly through openings in the key-board 2 and are connected at their lower ends to"',he
usual bell-cranks 14.-. The horiiontal shift-- MoRAvnmf a tle Roelf, in the county of Pulaskiand State fi and 7, said .type-barsbeing pivotally ing pull-rods 15 have theirl front ends connected to said bell-cranks 14, while their inner ends are provided with heads cr shoulders 16, 'corresponding in size and .shape preferably to the size and shape of the heads or shoulders 12 Acarried by thesaid upper and lower case pull-rods 1l and 11a. The said series of horizontal shift pull-rods 15 is net only adapted to slide axially, but their headed ends are adapted to be shifted up and down, to cause the heads thereon to engage with the corresponding heads of either the upper or lower case pull-rods 11 and 11 in printing with the upper or lower case type-bars l and 5.
and the numeral 18 the shift key lever, which latter is fixed upon a rock-shaft 19 which'has bearings 20 carried by the frame ever said shift key 17 is depressed the inner end of said shift key lever 18 will be correspondingly elevated and carry with it the inner ends of all of the shifting pull-rods 15. The numeral 21 indicates a guide-bar. for the inner ends of said shifting pull-rods 15, to which the inner end of the said shift key lever is pivotally connected at 22'.
The operation is as follows: It will frame piece 13, the rock-shaft 19 and the across the machine to accomplish the objects for which they are intended, above described. The guide-bar 21 should be heavy enough to return the shift pulllmods to their case pu l-rods llhwithout the usel of a spring, although it is clear that-a :skilled workman may apply a spring for the pur# pose should he desire to do so, without dearting from the spirit and' scope of my invention. Upon pressing `an`y one of the type-keys 3 its pull-rods will tranemit the necessary motion to the corresponding lower case type-bar 4 with the usual result that the type carried by said type-bar will make l'an impression stroke. When it is desired use the upper case type-bars 5 and type 7, all that is necessary to do is to depress the shift key 17, by' rocking the 1ock-sl1aft 19 and correspondingly elevating the guidebar 21 and the inner ends of all of the shift key pull-rods 15, thus carryingupwardly the heads ldcarried by said pull`r0ds, until said heads are in position to engage the cor? The numeral 17 indicates the shift key.y
of the typewriting machine so that, when-- guide-bar 21 extend a sufficient distance be understood that the key-board 2, the
normal osition, in contact withy the lower .resp'tniding'A heads 12 of the upper oase pull? rods 11, immediately above.l After.' the last mentioned operation, depression of any of;
the keys 3 Will operate' the corresponding uppercase type-bars 5. Upon releasing the just above the cerresponding heads 12. 1
claim; In a typewriter, a frame, a pair lof type bars pivotally secured to the frame, a Vertieal pull rod secured to each type bar, a
pair of horizontal pull rods arranged for the operation of the vertical pull rods, a head on each of the horiZontalpull rods, a guide bag a'pull rod carried by the guide bar and `arranged for movements lengthwise through the guide bar, a head on said/last mentioned pull rod, and a key for shifting said guide bar, substantially as shown and 'for the puri Copies cfthispatent may bey obtained for ive cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
