FOLDING CLOTHES-LINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 1919.
Application filed January 5, 1918. Serial N 0. 210,460.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARRIE K. DRESSER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lyndon Center, in the county of Caledonia and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Clothes-Lines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved wire clothes line and the principal object of the invention is to provide a clothes line which may be folded and put away when not in use and which may be easily connected with supportin hooks driven into a fence when it is deslred to make use of the line.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this line that wire clothes pins may be strung upon the line and prevented from becoming lost from the line.
Another object of the invention is to provide a line which will have a simple construction and at the same time be very eflicient in operation.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing the improved line with the clothes pins in place thereon, and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the clothes pins.
This line is formed in sections 10 which will be formed of wire, the inner ends of which will be bent to provide eyes 11 connecting the two sections. The outer ends of these wires forming the two sections will be formed into hooks 12 to engage hooks or nails driven in a fence and thus mount the line when in use. Adjacent the ends of the sections, the wires forming the sections will be bent to provide abutments 13 to limit sliding movement of the in 14. This line will preferably be formed of resilient wire and it will thus be seen that these abutments which are arched, will provide spring ele ments permitting stretching of the line and thus permitting the line to be securely held in place when 1n use. The clothes pins will be formed as shown in Fig. 2 and will be formed of resilient wire which wire will be bent to provide spring coils 15 which coils will constitute a sleeve through which the clothes line will pass. The strands will be further bent to extend above and below the sleeves or spring coils 15 thus providing handle sections 16 and jaw sections 17, the contacting strands 17 of which will be bent to provide teeth to tightly grip the clothes placed between the jaws and prevent the clothes from slipping out of engagement with the pins.
When in use, the line will be suspended through the medium of suitable hooks or nails driven into a fence and the pins can be moved alon the line to the proper points according to the length of the clothes to be suspended from the line. These pins will tightly grip the clothes and suspend them from the line thus preventing danger of the clothes slipping loose. When no longer to be used, the hooks 12 will be released from the nails or supporting hooks driven into the fence and the line can then be folded and put away until it is to be used again. The spring sections 13 permit the line to be stretched somewhat when put in place and will then contract the line thus causin the line to be securely held in place as we as serving as means for limiting movement of the pins upon the line.
What is claimed is A clothes line comprising a plurality of sections formed of resilient wire having their inner end portions loosely connected for folding of the line, the strands forming the sections being bent intermediate their length to provide spring elements and having their outer end portions bent to provide engaging hooks, and clothes engaging elements slidably mounted upon the line and limited in their sliding movement thereon by the spring elements.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
