METAL ROOFING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 28, 1919.
Application filed December 11, 1917. Serial No. 206,651.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC N. Owens, a citizen of the United States, residing at Janelew, in the county of Lewis and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal ltoofings, of which the following is a specificatlon.
This invention relates to metal roofing and primarily aims to produce a simple and effective interlocking means which will retain sheets of metal snugly in engagement and will positively prevent leakage at the 3o1nture of the sheets.
Another object is to provide a construction which will permit the roofing to be expeditiously assembled and secured to the building without exposing nails or other securing elements which are commonly used.
The above and other objects and advantages of this invention will be in part described and in part understood from the followin description of the present preferred embo iment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an end elevation illustrating roofing constructed in accordance with my invention and applied to a portion of a roo and Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the improved In the drawings in order to illustrate the ap lication of my invention aportlon 1 of a building is shown :(pon which my 1mproved roofing is secur The roofing in this instance comprises a plurality of metal sheets 2, adapted to rest upon the roof beams 1, each of which is arched adjacent one of its lateral margins, as indicated at 3, having the sides of the arched'portion pressed together to provide a rib 4. The up er or free marginal edge 5 of the rib is then bent downwardly at an angle as indicated at the right side 0 Fig. 1. Between the rib 4 and the proximatemarginal edge of the sheet, a plurality of open- 111 are provided through which are driven nails 6 or other suitab e securing devices. The edge of the sheet 2 remote from that which is secured by the nails 6, is turned up wardly at right angles as indicated at The free terminal of the edge is then turned downward at an angle as indicated at 7 and bent inwardly to provide a hook 8 which is adapted to embrace the angle portion 5 of the rib 4. After the hook 8 is engaged as above described, the angle portion 5 and said hook are then forced into intimate contact wlth the body of the rib 4 as shown at the left side of Fig. 1 of the drawing, thereby providing a water-tight jointure.
It will be appreciated that above I have described only one sheet of the roofing specifically, and the manner in which it is associated with proximate sheets, but it is to be understood that the sheets are all similarly formed and correspondingly similarly connected. By this method of overlapping the proximate portions of the sheets of metal it will be appreciated that no securing means or cementitious material will be required in order to retain the joints together. Moreover. the heads of the nails used for securing the sheets to the building will be covered with an obvious beneficial result.
It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be made within the sco of the appended claims without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
I claim:
1. A metal roof comprising a plate bent upon itself adjacent one edge-to provide an upstanding rib, the free end of said rib being bent downwardly and outwardly, a second sheet bent upwardly at one edge, the said upwardly bent portion being adapted to lie against said rib and being coextensive with the latter, and a curled portion providing an inward extension at the free end of said upwardly bent portion adapted to receive and engage over the downwardly and outwardly bent portion of said rib.
2. A metal roof plate being bent upon itself adjacent one edge to provide an upstanding rib, the free ed e of said plate beyond said rib being int e same plane with the body portion thereof, the free end of In testimony whereof I afiix my signature said rib being bent outwardly and downin presence of two witnesses.
\vurdly, the opposite end of sald plate being ISAAC N. OWENS. bent upwardly, and the upper end of said Witnesses: 5 bent portion being curled and providing an B. M. DAVISSON,
inward extension. C. E. Puma.
