Description
'tnvrrEn sTaTEs PATENT oEEIcE.
"WALTER N. NCHOLLS AND ALEXANDER W. CARMICHAEL, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.
ASTENER FOR SHEET ROOFING MATERIAL.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that we, lll/*ALTER NELSON NiCHoLLs and ALEXANDER VVILLTAM CAP.- ancnAEL, both subjects of the King of Great Britain, residents of the city of Toronto, county of York, Province ot' Ontario, in the Dominion ol' Canada, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Sheet Booting `hfl'aterial; and we do hereby declare that the following is a clear, full, and exact description of the saine.
The invention relates to improvements in 'fasteners for sheet-rooting material, as described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings that Aform part of the same.
The invention consists essentially in the novel 'formation of strips of sheet metal whereby the oints of the rooting are held securely in a weather tight. joint.
rThe objects of the invention are, to eliminate the use of cen ent 'in securing the joints ot tar or asphaltuni sheet rooting, to hold the edges oil. the rooting material securely, protecting the lifting or tearing action of the wind, and to devise a simple form of 'fastener which may be very easily .and quickly applied and which will make an eli'eetive weather tight joint and may be used on either fiat or pitched roots.
ln the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional perspective view of a portion of a roof showing the application of the invention. Fig. 9. is a perspective view showing the application of the device to a patched roof'. Fig. 3 is a j ierspective detail of an end cap tor use at the end ot a run of the `fasteners. Fig. il is an underside plan View ot' the end cap.
Like numerals of reference indicate c0rresponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the improved fastener, formed oit' a length of sheet metal rolled or stamped with the arched ribs Q and 3 at each olf the edges, and having a stejijiied offset 4L arranged Ain the flat p0rtion between the ribs. The stepped p0rtion 4.- is of a suit able depth to accon'nnodate the. edge 6 o't theoverlapping sheets of roofing material 7. x

'Application led December 23, 1911. Serial No. 667,566.
In the use 'of this device, the layers of roofing material are preferably laid with the edges overlapping and the fasteners are laid with the odset L abutting the edge and they are then secured by inserting the nails 8 into the nail holes 9 punched in the crown of the arched ribs 2 and 3 and driven down tight. As the edges of the metal strips are turned downwardly, the driving home of the nails sinks the said edges into the rooting G0 nailed hold the roofing down in a very secure manner making a thoroughly water tight job Without the use of cement and as the edges of the roofing material are thoroughly protected the ravages oit the weather cannot lift or tear it.
lVhat we claim as our inventio-n is A fastener for sheet roofing material, comprising, a strip of sheet metal formed with a pair of longitudinal arched ribs ex tending from end to end thereof and an offset forming a longitudinal step between the ribs, one of said ribs having its outer edge adapted to engage the surface of one layer of the rooting material in a weather tight joint and the outer edge of the other rib engaging the adjacent strip of rooting material, the stepped portion between the ribs completely covering the joint.
