Description

Dec. 27, 1932- LA VERNE (5. SMITH ROOF CONSTRUCTION Filed April 6, 1931 Z82 Verize flii'ziiih INVENTDR 5 Y E N R 0 T T A yr Patented Dec. 27, 1932 UNITED STATES LA VERNE G. SMITH, OF WEST non Ywooncamronivm noon cons'rnu'crioiv Application filed April 6,
This invention relates to improvements in roof construction and has for theprimary object, the provision of means for quickly and effectively securing in place tiling, slate shingles or similar roofing material with assurance of leak-proof connections being had and the prevention of accidental displacement or removal of any of the roofing members by weather elements.
Another object of this invention is the provision of tying and fastening elements for securing to the roof frame the various roofing materials and outer tiles or shingles in such a way that the tying and fastening elements are hidden from view and protected from Weather elements.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a roof construction of the above stated character which will be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement 5 of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing,
in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view of a roof construction constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary plan view illustrating the same.
Figure 3 is a perspective view illustrating one of the fastening and tying elements.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary plan view illustrating a modified form of my invention.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a roof frame including the supporting beams 2 on which are secured the sheathing or boards 3. The foregoing description relates to a well known roof support to which my invention is applied.
The boards 3 are covered by strips 4. of any suitable composition of material and the strips are arranged in overlapping relation as clearly shown in Figure 1. The upper edge of each strip is overlapped by the lower 1931. 'Serial No. 528,159.
edgeof the adjacent strip as shown at 5. The upper edges of the strips are secured to the boards 3 by nails or like fasteners 6 to which are secured tying elements 7 in the form of wire or similar material and which is 100* ed about the fastener as shown in Figure 3. The fastener 6 is provided with a pointed end and a comparatively large head to facilitate the driving of the fastener through the strips 4: and into the boards 3. V
After the fasteners are driven through the strips 4' and into the boards, weather proof cement is placed over the heads thereof and between the upper edges and lower edges of the adjoining strips so as to establish leakproof connections between said strips and also to protect the fastening elements from weather elements. The tying elements 7 extend outwardly from the joints between the strips and are adapted to be passed through apertures 8 of tiling or shingles and tied as shown at 9. The shingles or tiling are arranged in overlapped relation and when the roof is completed the tying elements are hidden from view and protected. The shingles or tiling secured in place by the tying elements will prevent them from becoming disarranged and obviates the customary practice of driving fasteners through the tiles or shingles. As shown in Figure 2 tiles of elongated formation are employed and are transversely curved and arranged in overlapping relation. As shown in Figure 4c elongated shingles are employed and arranged in overlapping relation and further it will be noted that the tying elements as shown in Figure l are slightly modified. The tying elements in this form of my invention are secured about the fasteners so as to provide a pair of extended ends, one end being secured to the inner shingle while the other end is secured to the outer shingle.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be noted that a roof construction has been provided wherein leak-proof joints are provided to prevent rain and the like from seeping through the roof and also a very efficient means is provided for securing each shingle and tile in place.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is:
A roof construction including a roof frame, strips covering the frame and having overlapped edges, headed fasteners securing the strips to the frame and covered by the overlapped edges of said strips, cement securing the overlapped edges of the strips together and covering the headed fasteners, and tying elements secured to the fasteners adjacent the heads thereof and extending outwardly from the overlapped edges of the strips and passed through openings in tiles or shingles and each tying element bent about itself after passing through the opening of the respective shingle or tile for securing said shingles or tiles in overlapped relation to cover the overlapped edges of the strips and the headed fasteners and ties.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
LA VERNE G. SMITH.
