application aie-a prix 26,1926. semi No. 104,731.
The object of this invention is `toprovide improved means for securing exible sheet roong, so that an absolutely tight joint or seam, will be. produced and indefinitely maintained without the use of paint or other material frequently employed for seallng the joints.
A further object is to provide a fiat or slightly curved stri of rust-proof material with portions strucg therefrom, to form tongues or clinching that when the stri sare secured to the upper surface of one s eet, the tongues may 'forced thru the sheet directly above, near the overlapping beyond, thelower edge of the stri and pressed down or clinched slightly below' said edge, thereby Acurving or bending the edge of the roofing sheet, and causing the latter to closely contact with the sheet which it overlaps.
A further object is topprovide a metallic in a direction transstrip curved sllghtl versely of its lengt so thatv the edges of the metallic strip will closely engage the roong sheet when nailedpdown, t e heads 'of said nails also being protected from the weather, since they will be covered by the sheet overlapping the .nailed portions.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described, illustrated. and claimed, it being understood that modifications may be made within the scope of the claims, without departin from the spirit of the invention.
ln t e drawings forming part of this application, n
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing fragmentary portions of sheet roofing material in overlap ing relation and showin a metallic strip aving tongues or the. ke struck up therefrom and adapted to ro'ect thru the upper sheet and to be eline e in the manner indicated.
Figure 2 is a view in section on the line 2 -2 of Figure 1.
` Figure 3 is a section thru the metallic strip, one of the tongues projecting up.- wardly, and the head of the nail by means devices so positioned edge thereof, said tongues of which the strip isy to be secured, being Ypartly drivenA home, so that it contacts with the surface of the metallic strip before this strip has been flattened out to 'cause the edges thereof to firmly grip the' roofing sheet. 55
be down, but during the process of nai ing, the
strip 12 is attened out'by the head 13 of the nail or nails 14, and firm engagement of the sheet 10 by the edges of strip 12 is thereby secured or insured.
In t e manufacture of the device, tongues i 15 are formed by stamping out portions to form' openings 16, and the particular loca- 70 tion of the ton ues or clinches isimportant, because it is L esired to have the tongues proJect beyond the lower edge of stri l'12 when said tongues are bent over. The ent over or deflected portions are shown at 18, 'l5 and it will be observed that because of the arrangement specified, a very close-joint may be 4produced betweenl the edge -11 of sheet 11 and the surface of sheet 10.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. The combination with the overlapping. portions of sheets of flexible roofing, of a metallic strip interposed "between said ortions, the ,strip including tongues proJecting thru .the uplpe'r sheet and bent over rthe iower edge of t e strip, to bring the edge of the upper sheet into close .contact withA the surface of the'lower sheet.
2. The combination with the overlapping portions of sheets of exible roong, of 'a metallic strip interposed between said portions, the strip including tongues projecting thru the upper sheet and bent over the lower edge of the strip, to-bring the edge of the upper sheet into close contact with the surface of the lower sheet, said strip being of arch form, in Aa transverse direction, when pplied, and securing devices passing thru e strip and the lower sheet and causing hown from the lower edge of the upper ti()-V the edges of the strip to firmly engage the over the edge of the strip in the direction lower sheet when the securing devices are of the curvature thereof for producing direct 10 forced to inal position. and positive Contact between the edge of the 3. A metallic strip for securing overlapupper sheet and the surface of the lower 5 ping portions of sheet roofing, the body of sheet, the strip to be positioned between the said strip being curved transversely and insheets. cluding tongues struck up Jfrom the main In testimony whereof I aiix my signature.
