-,WILLIAM B. nnunwonrn, or SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA.
s'EL'F-IJ MrING WHEELBARROW.
To all whomit may concern: Be it known that 1, WILLIAM BLUD- WORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento, State of'California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Dumping Wheelbarrows; and I do declare the following to be'a clear, :full, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in wheelbarrows used for carrying loads'oflall kinds for general work in cities, on 'farms, around mines, and especially for hauling and dumping concrete material into the mixing machine. The use of my improved barrow will be found very valuable in connection with the hauling and dumping of the material into the concrete mixer for the reason that it is so constructed that the load Will be nearly balanced on the supporting wheel whereby the lifting and pushing strain on the operator will be minimized.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one'which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for whi h it is designed.
These objects, I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of the parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
On the drawings, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete device.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of the retalningQIock for the scoop.
eferring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the handles of the barrow in the lower ends of which is journaled the supporting wheel 2. Secured to the members 1 at the rear of the wheel 2 is the supporting frame 3 on which the weight of the barrow rests when not being moved. At the forward ends of the members 1 is provided an upwardly extending supporting bar 4; which extends over and clears the wheel 2 to act as a rest and support for the barrow scoop 5 while dumping. This barrow scoop 5 is fixed to bars 6 which are pivotally mounted on projecting arms 7 fixed to tilte *any suitable latch connection with the Specification of Letters Patent. P t t 23, 1919 A pplication'filed December 19, 1317. Serial No. 207,817..
the bars 1 back of the wheel 2. The said I scoop 5 is so constructed as to be over-balanced at its outer end when the handles are raised slightly so that when released, the weight of such scoop and the weight of its load will cause the scoop to tip forward until it strikes the rest 4 in which position the inclination of the scoop will be such as to-cause the load to slide therefrom with but very small lifting effort on the part of the operator. 1 a v I When being loaded or transported {from one point to another, the said scoop 5 is held in the 'r'e'verse direction by means of handles 1 back of the pivotal point 7. In the drawings, I. show one form of holding means which consists of a cross bar 8 extending across the bars 1 and having a slot 9 in which is slidable a latching tongue 10 having an operating handle 11. A slot 12 is formed in the cross bar 8 transversely of the slot 9 to receive a tongue 13 on the rear end of the barrow scoop 5. The tongue 13 is provided with a slot 14 adapted to register with the slot 9. When these two slots are so in register, the tongue 10 is placed through them and thus locks the barrow scoo to the cross bar 8. Then when it is desire to release the same to dump the load, the operator pulls the handle 11 which withdraws the tongue 10 from the slot 14: and thereupon the scoop automatically dumps in the manner indicated. 90
The rest 4, of course, both acts as a support for the loaded scoop as it is dumping and at the same time acts to limit its downward movement so that it will not interfere with the wheel 2.
The bars 6 are provided with a plurality of holes 6* whereby the securing bolts 6 may be positioned in different ones of said holes to alter the vertical position of the scoop 5 as might be found desirable in practice. When this is done, it will be necessary to also alter the position of the bar 8. To this end the bars 1 are provided with slots 8 whereby the securin bolts 8 ma be used to position the bar 8 at diiferent points along the said bars 1.
It will be noted that by the peculiar construction of my improved barrow, the center of weight when the barrow is lifted may be practically balanced over the axis of the wheel 2, thereby rendering the barrow much more easily handled both for transporting it froin place to place and lifting it by readily be seen that I have produced such V a device as substantially fulfils the objects of theinvention asset forth herein, e,
While this specifieaublr sets forth in at: tail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from suoh' detail may be resorted to as doiiiot' form a" departure from the spirit of the invention:
Havingthus described my invention, What I claim as new and useful and desire to sec'ure-by' Letters Patent isi- I.
