SOLOMON STERN, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN'WHEELBARROWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 54,923, dated September 8, 1874; application filed August 3, 1874.
To all whom it may conce-rn:
Be it known that I, SOLOMONv STERN, of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wheelbarrows, of which the following is a specification:
The subject of my invention is an improvement in dumping wheelbarrows. It consists ot a balanced body or tray hinged, by means of a rod and lugs vor ears, to the front portion of a supporting-frame. At the back of the frame is a spring-catch, which can be operated by the foot for releasing the tray to dump the contents.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wheelbarrow illustrating my invention as constructed with a boxbed. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same, showing the tilted position of the body in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is aside elevation, showing the invention applied to an openframe wheelbarrowwithout a box. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the invention in the form` shown in Fig. 3.
A is the main frame, supported at back by legs L, and in front by a Wheel, B, running in a standard or pedestal, C, in customary manner. H are handles of usual forni. D is the tilting bed or frame, resting on the main frame A, and pivoted to the forward end thereof by a rod, E, passing through suitable hooks or eyes e. This frame is constructed of stout wood, firm-ly united by cross-pieces F, as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, when the barrow is made for carrying wood, brick, or other material not requiring a box; orit is made in the form of a box or hod, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, when the barrow is made for carrying coal, sand, sawdust, or other material which must be held in a containing vessel. Gr is a spring-catch, pivoted to the rear part of the main frame A, and extending downward, so as to be pressed back by the foot when required to dump the contents. When released, it is pressed forward to its normal position by means of a spring, in readiness to catch the pivoted frame or bed automatically,
and securely hold it.
The parts of the barrow are secured immovably together while conveying a load; but when the latter is to be dumped, this is effected by a slight pressure of the foot on the spring-catch Gr. The load being dropped, the pivoted bed or frame is restored to its normal position, either by drawing it down behind-or by lifting the handles of the barrow.
The following is claimed as new:
The combination of the main frame A, tilting frame l), and spring-catch G, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
SOLOMON STERN.
