A further object of the invention 1 s to provide in connection with such mechamsm, a special form of oflset teeth and cooperating portion of the lock bar, whereby facilitate the proper engagement and pos1- tioning of the rack and ty e plates.
In the accompanying rawmgs showing one embodiment of our invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of the device applled to a calculating machine. Fig. 2 1s a s1de elevation of the parts in the normal position. Fig. 3 shows the same parts 1n the advanced positions. Fi 4 shows one of the cam plates separate y; and Fig. 5 shows one of the levers and the locking bar in section.
In the construction of machines of th1s character it is customary to have a set of stop bars that are advanced on depression of an item key; and also rack and type plates that are permitted to advance when the handle or main shaft is actuated. Obviously, with such a construction the type bar cannot advance too far or beyond the correct position because of its enga ement .wlth the stop bar, but it .will somew at rebound and may assume a position sli htly below the correct one for printing. T ereprovide a series of ofi'set teeth or an extenslon of each type plate or carrier, and a lock bar to cooperate therewith, that are constructed with beveled ends or engaging edges that will move the type bar upwardly if depressed below its proper position for printing.
As shown in t e drawing there are a series of rack and type plates 6 that are moved upwardly along guide post 7 by springs 8; and the type plates have lugs9 projecting rearwardly that engage a universal bar 10. The latter is mounted on a pair of arms 11 on a main shaft 12 that is rocked by an arm 13 on a pitinan 14, that is reciprocated by the handle or actuating shaft. These parts. are shown in their normal position in Fig. 2, and with the universal bar fully elevated in Fig. 3. On the front ofeach rack and type plate 6 is a lug 15 that will engage any one of a set of sto bars ,16, that are advanced by depression 0 a key 17, see Fig. 1. When the universal bar is swung upward the rack and type late 6 will be moved upwardly by the spring 8 until the lug 15 engages one of the sto bars 16 that may have been advanced by epression of a key, as shown in Fig. 3. The rack and type plate will thus be arrested, while the uni versal bar continues its upward movement. The type 18 on the rack and type plate corresponds in position with the stop bars 16, and hence one of these will be positioned opposite the platen 19, when the stop arrests the rack and type plate, as shown in Fig. 3. To overcome this ob ect1on weprovide a series of teeth 20 on an extension 21 ofthe pivoted at 28 on the side plates 26 and 27 of the prlnting section 37 of the machine,
see Fig. 1. These arms are swung by springs 29 to move the lock bar away from the teeth 20. On the plates 26 and 27 are also pivoted'cam plates 30. Each cam plate has a concentric rear edge 31 and a recessed portion at 32 connecting with the concentric portion 31 by an eccentric portion or cam 33. Each lever 25 has a stud 34 that is normally held in the recess 32 by the action of the-springs 29. A spring 35 1s connected with each cam plate 30 to hold 1t in the POSI- tion shown in Fig. 2, with the stud 34 engaging the extension 36 of the cam plate.
The parts being in the normal position of Fig. 1, and the universal bar being raised after the stop bar 16 has been advanced, the swinging of the shaft 12 W11]. first permlt the universal bar 10 to elevate, bringing the rack and type plate to engage the stop bar, whereupon'the further rising of the universal bar 10, after it has caused the lug 15 to pass beyond the range of all of the stop bars 12, will bring the universal bar to engage the two cam plates 30 at their front ends. These plates will thus be swung to lower their rear portions engaging the studs 34:. The cam plate'will very shortly bring the cam portlon 33 to engage the studs on the arms 25, that will rock the arms and move the lock bar 22 rearward. This lock bar and the rack and type plates are so relatively positioned, thatwhen the lug 15 is engaged with a stop bar 16,
the lock bar will be swung between two adjacent teeth 20 on the type plate extension. This will serve the lock or accurately position the rack and type plate in the proper position for printing. The further advance of the universal bar and swinging of the cam plates will bring the concentric portion 31 to engage the studs 34, and the arms 25 and lock bar will be retained in the locking position, for the remainder of the movement of the universal bar.
But, if the rack and type plate should rebound and take a position slightly below that indicated in Fig.3, then the beveled edge of the lock bar .24 will strike the beveled edge 23 of the tooth just abovethe recess into which the lock bar should enter. The tooth and the rack bar having inclined faces, will cooperate to force the rack and type plate upwardly the proper distance until the lock will enter the space or recess between the teeth. It will be observed that from this constructidnof the teeth and the lock bar, the rack and type plate cou'ld i-ebound considerable distance, as long asthe two ini cliiie'd faces of the lock bar andlof t ermos above the proper recess, are brought to-' gether. .It be understood that as soon as the universal bar begins to descend, the springs 35-.will retract the cam lates, and .very shortly the studs will pass E concentric! edges and be engagedby the recess in the cam'plates, whereupon the springs 29 will swing the arms and withdraw the lock bar at once from' the rack and ty e plate recess between the teeth; which Wlll return these parts to normal position.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is 1. In a calculating machine, a rack and type plate provided with a carrier portion, type in the carrier portion, the plate having a set of teeth corresponding in relative position'to the type on the carrier portion, a pair of levers pivoted on the machine, a lock bar eyond the carried by said levers to be shifted thereby to and from said teeth, a stud carried by each of said levers, a cam plate pivoted for engagement with each of said studs respectively, a universal bar arranged to control the movement of a rack and type plates, said plates being in position to be swung by the universal bar at the latter portion of its advance movement, said cam plates being shaped to first swing said levers to shift the lock bar into engagement with said teeth, and to retain the levers and lock bar in such position for the remainder of the advance of the universal bar, and means for holding said leversto press the studs against the cam plate.

In a calculating machine, a rack and type plateprovided with a carrier portion, type in the carrier portion, the plate having a set of teeth corresponding in relative position to the type on the carrier portion, a pair of levers pivoted on the machine, a lock bar carried by said levers to be shifted thereby to and from said teeth, a stud carried by each of said levers, a cam plate pivoted for engagement with each of said studs respectively, said plates being in position to be swung by the universal bar at the latter portion of its advance movement, said cam plates being shaped to first swing said levers to shift the lock bar into engagement with said teeth, and to retain the levers and lock bar in such position for the remainder of the advance of the universal bar, and means for holding said levers to press the studs agamst the cam plate, said teeth on the plate engaged by the lock bar having their e xtremities all inclined in the same direction and being offset to receive the lock bar between adjacent teeth, said lock bar havingha beveled edge to cooperate with said teet 3. 4. In a calculating machine, a rack and type plate provided with a carrier portion, type 1n the carrier portion, the plate having a set of ofi'set teeth corresponding in relative position to the type on the plate, a pair of levers pivoted on the machlne', a lock bar carried by said levers and arranged to engage said teeth and enter the space between the same, a pair of cam plates pivoted on the machine, a stud on each of said levers,
springs on said levers to press the studs against the cam plates and retract the lock bar from the teeth, said cam plates being engaged 'by the universal bar at the latter portion of its advance, and a spring for retracmg the cam plates on return of the universal bar, said cam plates being arranged to engage said studs by an eccentric portion to first shift the levers and cause the lock bar to enter between said teeth, and said cam plate on further advance of the universal bar engaging the studs by a concentric portion for the remainder of the advance stroke to hold the lock bar in engagement with said teeth, said teeth on the plate engaged by the lock bar having their extremitles all inclined in a general direction and being ofi'set to receive the lock bar between adjacent 'teeth, said lock bar having a beveled edge to cooperate withrsaid teeth.
5. In a calculating machine, a rack and type plate provided with a carrier portion, type in the carrier portion, the plate having a set of teeth corresponding in relative position to the type on the plate, a lock 'bar movably supported on the machine to engage between the difl'erent teeth as the 'said plate is shifted to different printing positions, a universal bar arranged to control the movement of all the rack. and type plates, means for normall holding said lock ar away from the rac and type plate, and means connected with 'the lock bar arranged to be engaged by the universal bar when advanced to first shift the lock bar to engage the rack and type plate at said notches, and to retain the lock bar in locking positlon for the remainder of the stroke of the universal bar, said teeth on the plate engaged by the lock bar having their extremities all inclined from side to side in.
