To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE B. FEDRlCK and JAMES LEE, citizens of the United States, residing at Dodge City, in the county 0f Ford, State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Rotary Pump of which the followingis a specification.
The subject of this invention is a rotary pump, and the objects of the invention are. first, to provide a rotary pump with novel suction means, second, to provide means for suspending the runner of the pump within the..casing, third. to provide pistons which are extendedby centrifugal force and cam retracted, fourth, to provide a simple and etlicient rotary pump.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the detailsof construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention hereinafter disclosed. can he made within the scope of what is. claimed. without departing from the spirit of the invention.

is provided at the central point of its bot.

An outwardly extending annular flange 3 is formed at the upper edge of the bowl, and this flange is provided with spaced apertures 4 for the reception of bolts or the like. by which the top or cover and intake and disehargepipes may be secured in place. Each seg: mental portion is bounded by upstanding side flanges 10 the outer ends of which are joined by an arcuate flange 11. An aperture 9 may be provided in each segment 9 for the purpose of allowing water which may enter a segment to drain therefrom. l -he rotary element is secured on the shaft 7 by a set screw 12 or in any other suitable manner.
As will be evident the segments 9 with theirside flanges 10 define channels or slots in whichtthe pistons or impeller blades are slidably mounted. These pistons consist of shanks 13 each formed at one end with a head 14 in the upper and lower edge of which is provided a groove for the reception of a packing strip 15. Bores 16 may extend through each head and communicate with the upper and lower slots and within these bores may be mounted rods 17 the ends of which enter apertures in the strips 15 and which rods are surrounded by the coiled compression springs 18 which abut the strips 15 and force them outwardly against the top and bottom of the pump casing.
A longitudinal rib 19 extends along each side of the pistons and is-adapted to enter and slide in a groove-20, formed in the face of each flange 10. This structure keeps the pistons in proper vertical position with respect to the rotary member. A pin 21 is threaded in each shank 13. from which it. rises. and upon each pin 21 turns a roller 22.
A cover 23 is provided for closing the bowl or casing 1 and this cover is formed tioned to lie adjacent the abutment 6 on the side opposite to that at which the inlet port. 5 opens.
A cam flange 27 depends from the cover and is adapted to contact the rollers 22 for the purpose of drawing the pistons inwardly as they successively pass the abutment 6.
The pistons after passing the abutment (3 are 7 adjusted that the rotary member is held just clear of the 'bottom of the bowl 1.
The shaft 7 may be coupled to a drive shaft in any suitable manner but is herein shown asconnected by a coupling sleeve 32 which is feathered on the end of each shaft as shown in Fig. 2. It is to be noted that the drive shaft 33 does not rest upon the sl gft fibut its weight is supported by-other 'inea'nsflhereby relieving the pump structure of this additional strain An inlet pipe 34 and an outta pipe 2-35 are secured to thepump casing for the purpose of conveying water to and from the same.

The preferred form ofvalve used for this purpose is shown in F1g. 5 and consists of a cylnidric'al valve caslng 36 1n the lower end fwhIch IS a The cover may be ring or collar 37 theinner periphery of which is beveled to form a seat for a valve 38. The valve 38 has upstanding curved wings or vanes 39 spaced about it which act to uide the valve and also give it a twistmg movement to grind the valve on its seat. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and sought by Letters Pat. ent, is: l A rotary pump, comprising a casing pro vided with an inlet and an outlet port, 'a rotary member turning in the casing and consisting of a hub, horizontally disposed segmental sections extending from the thubfl I said sections provided with grooves on their opposed edges, pistons mounted between the sections and normally held in extended positions, ribs on the pistons and adapted to enter the grooves, and a cam on the casing for successlvely retracting the pistons.
