PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21, 1919.
Application filed July 27, 1918. Serial No. 247,040.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, IsIAI-I Z. ZELMA, a citlzen of. the United States, residing at East 'Palatka,*in'the county of Putnam and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presses, of whlch the following is a specification, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings.
within a barrel or other receptacle, and.
whereby the application of the head of the barrel or the like may be materially facilitated.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several arts of my improved press whereby certam important advantages. are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advanta eous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be better understood I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating a press constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in working position;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view, partly in elevation and partly in section, of the device as herein disclosed; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view illustrating a mounting of a slide within the guideway.
As is disclosed in the accompanying drawings a pair of sills S are arranged in parallelism, and extending upwardly from each of said sills is a pair of standards 1 terminating at their upper extremities in the parallel portions 2. The u per and lower extremities of each pair of parallel portions 2 are connected by the heads 3.
The parallel portions 2 afford guide-ways in which are mounted for rectilinear movement the slides 4, and said slides 4 are con nccted at their lower end portions by an interposed block 5 having lateral extensions overlying the opposed faces of the portions 2, so that said slides 4 will be caused to move in unison and be effectively mounted in applied position. i
The upper portion of the slides 4 support a shaft 6 on which is rotatively mounted a roller 7 positioned between the slides 4. Constantly contacting with the upper portion of the roller 7 is an eccentric roller8 positioned between the side frames afforded by the pairs. of standards and which issupported by the pin 9 passing through said eccentric and connected with the upper heads 3. The eccentric adjacent the upper head 3 is provided with the operating lever or handle 10 arranged substantially tangentially of the eccentric whereby the deslred movement may be imparted thereto.
Disposed over the eccentric roller 8 and beneath the roller 7 is a, flexible member 11, which serves to assure the upward movement of the roller 7 when the high point of the eccentric roller is moved upwardly and whereby constant contact between the rollers 7 and 8 is assured;
Positioned a desired distance below the roller 7 and between the frames is an annular member or ring 14 of suitable rigid material and which is disposed in substantially a horizontal plane and riveted or otherwise secured to the member or ring 14 are the upwardly disposed and inwardly inclined rigid arms 12. The arms 12 are disclosed as four in number and the upper end portions of each pair of said arms are engaged with the shaft 6 hereinbefore referred to, so that as the slides are moved downwardly or upwardly under the influence of the eccentric roller 8, the annular member or ring will move in unison therewith and in the same direction.
My improved press as hereinbefore described is particularly adapted in the use of packing vegetables, such as potatoes, in a bar-.
rel or receptacle of the type embodied in my co-pending application filed July 24, 1918, Serial No. 246,539. The barrel or receptacle after being properly filled is placed between the frames of the press below the annular member or ring 14, and after the head of the barrel has been properly positioned, the handle or lever 10 is forced downwardly and which operation results in the annular member or ring 14 being forced downwardly under high pressure. This assures the proper packing of the vegetables within the barrel or other container, and also facilitates the anchoring of the head within the barrel.
I claim: g
1. A press comprising side frames having parallel guideways, slides arranged Within the guide-ways, a roller supported by the slides, an eccentric supported between the frames outwardly of the roller and constantly in contact therewith, said eccentric being provided with operating means, and work engaging means operatively engaged withthe slides and movable therewith.
2. A press comprising side frames having parallel guide-ways, slides arranged within the 'guideways, a roller supported by the slides, an eccentric supported between the frames outwardly of the roller and constantly; in contact therewith, said eccentric being provided with operating means, work engaging means operatively engaged with the slides and movable therewith and a flexible member disposed around the roller and 3. A press comprising side frames having parallel guideways, slides arranged Within the guideways, a roller supported by the slides, an eccentric supported between the frames outwardly of the roller and constantly in contact therewith, said eccentric being provided with operating means, a work engaging member disposed inwardly of the roller, rigid arms connected to the member and operatively engaged with the slides whereby said working engaging member and slides are caused to move in unison and in the same direction.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
I ISIAH Z. ZELMA. Witnesses R. L. EARNEST, J. HICKENLOOPER.
