To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MATHIAs ZAUN, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at So. Bethlehem, county of Northampton, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice- Creepers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in devices for preventing the slipping of shoes or like foot coverin s upon slippery surfaces.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a device which may be readily attached to the sole of a shoe, the device being provided with spurs which are extensile-so as to engage with the surface trodden upon, or which may be folded closely adjacent to the sole of the shoe, presenting no impediment to the ordinary use of the shoe.

A further object is to provide such attachments in forms which may be readily and conveniently applied, and which are not observable from the upper portion of the shoe.

These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which:

Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, showing the spurs folded against the sole.

In the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the sole of a conventional type of shoe, having a heel 11 as is usual. Engaged upon the raised portion 12 of the sole, immediately below the instep of the shoe and adjacent to the heel 11, is a base plate 30, and formed with it is a pair of outstanding lugs 32, in which is fixed a pin 33, the same acting as a pivot within the surrounding coiled end of an arm 34, having a transverse plate formed with spurs 35.

Rigidly secured to the arm 34, by fastenings 36, is a cam spring 38, the same being so formed as to present one contact surface copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the 39, adapted to engage with the exterior of the sole, whereby the spurs are held in an extended position, as shown in Fig. l, or, when the arm or bar 34 is in a folded position, as shown in Fig. 2, another portion 40 of the cam spring engages similarly with the sole, holding the spurs closely adjacent to its lower side.

From the foregoing it will be seen that the device presented, when attached to the sole of the shoe, will prevent the same from slipping in any direction when the spurs are in an extended, operative position, and it will be obvious, that upon folding the arm over upon the plate, that the same will be held in a folded position and not interfere with the use of the shoe.

It will further be evident that the device can be manufactured at a moderate expense and readily applied when desired.

aving thus described my invention what claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In an anti-slipping device attachment, the combination with a base plate adapted to be attached to the sole of a shoe, of lugs formed on said plate, an arm pivoted be tween said lugs, spurs integrally formed upon said arm, and a spring secured to said arm, said spring extending oppositely, and formed to make contact with the sole of the shoe, whereby said arm may be held in either of two positions.

In an anti-slipping device, the combination with a base plate secured to the sole of the shoe below the instep thereof, of lugs formed on said plate, a pivot pin in said lugs, an arm having a part coiled about said pin, spurs formed upon said arm, and a cam spring rigidly engaged with said arm, said cam spring being so shaped as to make contact with the sole of the shoe at different points whereby said arm may be held in two different positions.
