Description

W. J. TACKABERRY.
WASHING MACHINE. APPLICATION HLEDJUNE I9,19I7.
Patented Jan. 21, 1919'.
WILLIAM J. TACKAIBERRY, 013 FORT WORTH, TEXAS.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 21, 1919.
Application filed June 19, 1917. Serial No. 175,573.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. TACKA- BERRY, a citizen of the United States of Ierica, residing at Fort Worth, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVashing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to washing machines and more particularly to certain improvements fo facilitating the rubbing of the clothing and for forcing the water through the clothing and for simplifying the working parts. Other objects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description and the invention will be more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application.
Figure 1 is an elevation of the washing elements, shown on a' section of a vessel for containing water. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the washing elements, shown without the end frame. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the washing machine. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the yielding adjustable holder for the main washing drum or roller. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the mounting device. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the flexible traveling rubbing conveyer. Fig. 7 is a detail view of one of the rollers for carrying the traveling conveyer. Fig. 8 is a detail View, being a portion of the covering of the main washing c rum.
Similar characters of reference are used to indicate the same parts throughout the several views.
The washing devices are shown mounted on a vessel 1 by means of a base 2 and ad justable hangers 3. Bearing members 43 are attached to the base 2 and frame members 5 (not necessary to be shown in full) are at tached to the base 2. The bearing members 4 have vertical slots 6 therein for the shaft 7 of the main drum 8. The drum 8 is pref erably constructed of open-ended heads 9 to v which is attached a perforated sheet metal covering 10 so that water can flow freely through the ends 9 and through the covering 10. The shaft 7 of the drum 8 projects through the slots 6 and a crank 11 or other suitable driving means may be connected with the shaft. The flexible conveyer 12 is made of substantially Sshaped pieces of metal 13 which engage each other in a' rolling relation and this conveyer is mounted on roller or Idlers 14 which are j ournaled in the bearing members 4. The rollers 14 have shoulders 15 to prevent displacement of the traveling conveyer 8. The conveyer 8 will be driven by the friction of the clothes bearing thereon and by the corrugated surface of the drum 8. The sections 13 of the conveyer may be made of metal or hard rubber or suitable material. The drum 8 will be held yieldingly against the clothes by tWo pairs of springs 16 and yokes 17. The springs 16 are attached to the base 2 and to the bearing yokes 17. Bearin 's 18 are pivotally connected to the yokes 17 and each bearing 18 has more than one bearing hook 19 for engaging the shaft 7 for making the drum 8 adjustable relative to the conveyer 12 so that more or less clothes or clothes of thicker or thinner makeup may be run through between the drum 8 and the conveyer 12. The plurality of bearing hooks and the springs 16 make the drum 8 amply adjustable relative to the Work being done. Double hooks 20 are provided for convenience in lifting the bearings 18 from the shaft 7 for removal of the drum and for elevating the bearing hooks 19 to engage the shaft 7. Antifriction rollers 21 are journalcd in the base 2 and in bearings 22 attached to the end bearing members 4 for preventing the clothing from stopping against the bearing members 4 for facilitating the passage of the clothes through the machine.
What I claim, is,
1. A washing machine comprisin a base, bearing members attached to said ase and provided with vertical slots therein, a plurality of idle rollers journaled in said bearingmembers, a jointed endless flexible conveyer mounted on said rollers, a drum journaled in said bearing members cooperating with said conveyer and having a shaft proj ecting through said slot-s, bearing yokes and springs attaching the same to said base, and bearing members pivotally connected to said yokes for engaging the shaft of said drum to hold the same in yielding relation to said conve er.
2. washing machine comprisin a base bearing members attached to said ase and provided with vertical slots therein, a plurality of idle rollers journaled in said bearyokes yieldingly connected to said base for ing members, aconveyer made up of S-shaped engaging said shaft to hold said drum in Sections loosely engaging each other mounted yielding relation to said conveyer." 10 on said rollers, a drum composed of ends In testimony whereof I set my hand, this 5 and a corrugated periphery and having a 19th dayof March, 1917.
shaft, projecting through said slots for cooperating with said conveyer, and bearing WILLIAM J. TACKABERRY.
