IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES..
Specication forming part of Letters Patent N o. 183,432, dated October 17, 1876 application led August 21, 1876.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, COLUMBUS STONE, of Bnrkesville, in the county of Cumberland and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Washing-Machine, of which the following is a specification:
Figure lis a side elevation. end view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists of a pair of ribbed rollers, arranged one above the other in a suitable frame, and capable of longitudinal motion. rEhe upper one is provided with a crank for turning, and cams at each end for giving it an end motion. The shafts of the upper and lower rolls are connected by a lever, so that the motion of the upper roll is duplicated in the lower one, but in the opposite direction.
A is a frame supporting the rolls B C. The roller B is placed on a shaft, a, having fixed bearing iu the frame A: -b b are cams that are attached to the ends of the roller B, and engage with lugs c, fixed to the sides of the frame A. The cams are placed in relation to each other, so that they act alternately in Fig. 2 is an that is held up'by the spring z'. It will bel seen that on turning the crank D the roller B .will not only be revolved, but will also receive a reciprocating end motion by the action of the cams. This motion is duplicated in the lower roll by the lever E, but in the opposite direction. Clothes placed between the rollers B C are acted upon in a manner similar to hand rubbing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patenty The arrangement of the ribbed rolls B C, cams b, lugs c, lever E, and swivels d f, substantially as herein shown and described.
