UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIcE.
ROY VICTOR HOPKINS, F LAMONI, IOWA.
COMBINED ENVELOP AND LETTERSHEET. i
l To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ROY V. HOPKINS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Lamoni, in the county of Decatur and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Im' provements in Combined Envelops and Letter-Sheets, of which the' followingis a specification. f
This invention relates to envelops and has particular reference to that class of envelops of the return type.
An important object of the invention is to provide in a device of the above mentioned character a means whereby the envelop may be returned by the receiver'to the sender of the same without necessitating readdressing of the original sender.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a face View of a blank,
Fig. 2 is a View of the opposite face .of the-same,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of an envelop shown partially closed,
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the same showing the tongue inserted,
Fig. 5 is a similar View of the same show- T ing the tongue folded outwardly,
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of the invention, and,
Fig. 7 is a similar view of the same.
In the drawings, attention being called to Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, wherein is shown a preferred form of my invention, the numeral 10 indicates substantially a lrectangular blank of paper creased las shown at 11 in a transverse line dividing the blank into an upper portion 12 and a lower portion 13.
From the edge of the upper portion 12 there is projected a tongue 14 preferably formed integral with the blank 10. This tongue is coated at the longitudinal edge thereof with a suitable paste or adhesive 15 and has formed substantially centrally therein an elongated opening 16.
The rectangular blank 10 is provided at one longitudinal edge thereof with a relatively narrow wing 17, extending throughout the length of the blank 10 and formed integral therewith. The other longitudinal edge of the blank 10 is provided with a wing Specification of Letters Patent.
18 similar to that indicated by the numeral 17, it differing only in Vthat the width'of the same is substantially greater than that of the wing 17.
In folding the blank to form an envelop the necessary steps are as follows: First the lower portion 13 of the blank 10 is folded on the line 11 upon the upper portion 12. The wings 17 and 18 are then folded on the lines 19 and 20, respectively, and inwardlv upon the lower portion 13 which has been folded upon the upper portion 12, as described, the wings 17 and 18 forming with the adjacent portion 21 of the blank a pocket 22. The lower half 23 of the upper portion l2 and the adjacent half 24 of the lower,

name of the person to Whom it is desired to send the envelop, appears upon the face of the envelop as shown in Fig. 4. When the envelop is received by this person the tongue is removed, and the envelop may be unfolded by reversing the steps hereinbefore described in the folding of the blank, thus bringing to the attentionjof the receiver the written or printed contents of the envelop, which printed or written matter may be Written or printed upon at any desired portion of the blank. I have shown in the drawings the position and nature of certain Written or printed matter, but it is to be understood that a. rearrangement may be made in accordance with the desires of the user of the envelop.
Should the receiver of the envelop desire to return the same to the original sender,
In considering the modified form of myinvention, attention being called to Figs. 6 and 7. the numeral 26 indicates the body portion of an envelop, the body portion being of the conventional type and shape. To the upper edge of one side of the body portion there is provided a tongue 27, bearing the name and address of the original sender as shown in Fig. 2, and provided with an elongated opening 28. When the envelop is originally sent, the name and address of the designed receiver appears on the face of the envelop, the ton ue carrying the name of the sender being fo ded within the body 26 as shown in Fig. 6. Upon receipt of the envelop by the oneto whom it was sent, the ton e 27 is removed, it being not sealed wit in the body 26. Should the receiver 15 vdesire to return the enevlo to the original `sender the tongue is paste in the posltion shown in Fig. 7, thereby displaying the original senders name as indicating the dei signed receiver, and indicating the original receiver as the sender in this particular instance. 1
l wish it understood that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope o the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, what ll clalm as new and desire to secure meme@ and protect by Letters Patent of the United l cient in size to contaln an address, the lower portion beinggfolded upon the u per portion; a wing carried by each si e Vof said blank, said wings being 'folded upon the lower folded lportion of said blank to form therein a pocket, the lower half ofthe u per portion and the lower half of the fo ded portion lbein folded upon the upper half of the folde portion; a tongue carried by the upper half of the upper portion, said t n e being of suiicient size te contain an ad ress and 'having an opening arranged therein, said pocket being arranged to receive said tongue whereby the first named address only will appear, said ton e being provided wlth an adhesive materia whereby the tongue may be adhered to the face of the envelop to close said pocket and exhibit both the rst and second named addressesv and the second named address Abeing ein4 hibited through said opening.
