EMERY EASTMAN HARDY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CAN-OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented. Jan, 21, 1919,
Application filed July 11. 1917. Serial No. 179,805.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that 1,. EMnRY EAs'rM xN HARDY,a citizen of the United States, reslding at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of'New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can- Openers, of'which the following is a speclfication.
My invention relates to improvements in canv openers, and the object of my improvement is to produce a can opener that comprises a pair of jaws or blades that cofiperate to shear the material of the can top, and which furthermore to effect such cutting are operated by means of a single handle and by an upward movement thereof. whereby the operation is substantially like that of certain can openers that are Well known and in common use.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of my "improved can opener.
Fig. 2 is a plan view on an enlarged scale of one end of the same.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a similar view of the same with the parts in a different position.
Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the same.
Fig. 6 is a side elevation showing a development of the end of the handle member shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
My improved can opener comprises a handle member 10 that serves as a fixed member or frame and a movable aw member 11 mounted thereon in a special manner to be described, both the said fixed member 10 and the movable member 11 being formed of sheet material.
The handle member 10 as shown is provided at one end, at the right end 12 in Fig. 1, .with certain can opening devices that form no part of the present invention.
The main body portion 13 of the handle member 10 serves as the handle proper, and the jaw member 11 is mounted at the other or left end of the said handle member 10.
The said left end is of peculiar formation comprising as shown in Fig. 2 a laterally extending guide arm 1 1 at the outer end portion for engaging with the edge of the can, the said finger 14 being directed to one side of the plane of the said body portion 13 and connected to the end of the said body portion.
Between the arm 14 and the handle proper serves as a cutting edge, and the same is provided with a curved, convex formation suitably to permit of a rocking movement of the can opener as a whole with the said outtingedge 19in bearing engagement with the top of the can.
The movable jaw member 11 is mounted against one side face of the fixed jaw member 16, and comprises a body portion 20 provided with a hole 21 for receiving the pivotal pin 17 and with a slot 22 that is eccentric to the said pivotal hole 21 for receiving the stop pin 18, the end walls of the slot 22 cooperating with the said pin 18 to limit the rocking or swinging movement of the said movable jaw member 11.
At the lower edge portion the body portion 20 of the movable jaw member 11 is provided with a generally downwardly projecting prong 23, and the upper edge portion may be rounded as shown.
The prong 23 has a pointed lower end 24 and has the upper edge portion 25 formed as a cutting edge and of curved contour, suitably to coiiperate with the cutting edge 19 of the fixed jaw member 16.
In use, some part of the lower edge portion 26 in extension of the rounded cutting edge 19 of the handle member 10 is brought into contact with the top surface of the can, and the movable jaw member 11 is swung so as to brin the prong 23 to the rearmost position, t e stop pin 18 being in engagement with the lower end wall of the slot 22 as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The next movement is an upward movement of the handle proper 13, which is accompanied by a closing of the jaws 19 and 25, and cuttlng of the material of the can top, the shearing being efi'ected as the bearing ortion of the cutting edge 19 of the fixed jaw member 11 is moved along by the rolling of the said outtin edge 19 along the can top.
he lower edge portion of the fixed jaw member 16 is provlded outwardly from the cutting edge 19 with a serrated edge 29, for gripping the can top.
The pin 18 serves as the main cam pin, the same being fixedly secured to the body portion or handle member 13, and traveling in the cam slot 22 in the jaw member 20 as de scribed. i
As a further detail, the pin 17, that serves as the pivotal pin for the jaw member 20,
17 in the short cam slot 28 that effects a continuation of the cutting of the can top.
I claim as my invention A can opener operative to cut a can top I by a lifting movement ofra single handle,
Copies of this; patent may be obtained for comprising a handle member having a jaw with a cutting edge at one end and a handle extending rearwardly from the said jaw, and a movable jaw member mounted on the said handle member, the said movable jaw member having a forwardly extending jaw that is provided with a cutting edge, the cutting edge on the handle member being positioned above the cutting edge on the movable jaw member and separated therefrom by a space for receiving the can top, and the connection between the said members comprising a set of cooperating pins and slots that permit of shifting the said members relatively one to the other so as to open the said space in one position, for engaging with the can top, and substantially closing the said space during the cutting movement.
