'f Ap'puetieiiifiie'a renami'z, i916, serial Na'vaezs.' Renewed May 2o. 191s. serial No; 'assess'.
" '2"Be itknown that/I, 'WILLIAM'ELIJAH ELLIOTT, a citizen of the United States of America,-'res'iding at Grand Rapids, in the county'of 'Kent and State of Michigan, have invented 'certain n'eW'randf useful Improve- I' .'1 ments infMounts and Methodsof Mounting LacingI-Iooks; and I'do hereby declare the following'to'be a'fu'll, clear, and e'Xact description oftheinventi'on,"'sluch as'vvill en# ableothers v4skilled in'the'art to'vvhichV it apf' pertains to'make'ancl'use the same.
H lates to a' method of packaging small articles I `more flexiblevvhen vit is `desired such as lacing hooks, "arranged ina series upon an elongated'strip, preferably o'f flexible materiaL-Which is particularly designed to render the strip with its attached articles to coil the same into `a "packagefil 'T' I' T-Another Object of the invention relates to a package of lacing hooks in which the lac` ing hooks are' 'conveniently arranged and -temporarily retained-in `a novel andimproved manner.
A'featureof the inventionconsists in the arrangement of a 'packageof lacing hooks such that the lacing hooks are' temporarily attached to an elongated strip, for example,
bypassing-the 'Shanks thereof through the strip, and are temporarily retained therein by bending over one edge ofthe strip so 'that it enters the recesses' between' the heads and the shanks of the lacing hooks. Such a package enables the retention of lacing hooks in a predetermined lrelation to one another so that they occupy a comparatively small amount of space and may be formed into a 'i compact package from which they may be removed Without disturbing the relationship Y between the series of hooks.
Othenfeatures consist in a construction and arrangement' 4ofa package of lacing hooks such that 'the packagel is rendered more iielxiblel by the removal of specified portions of the mounting strip. i l I- Other Afeatures of 'the invention will .ap-V pear from thefollovving description of an illustrative embodiment of 'the' invention, taken in connectionvvith drawing, in Whichv Figure l is aperspec'tive vieu" illustrating a completed package containinglacing hooks. f Fig-2 is a plan view thereof.

the accompanying securely to retain the'hool'tsthereon.' Figs.
1', '2 and 4 show but a fragment of a strip of indeinitelength 'to I'vhich the hooksv are sebured..., e ,i v1. .,I
-' Like reference characters refer to' 'like parts throughout the several views ofthe drawing."j' 'T y Lacing hooks commonly comprise a shank or barrel '"1' at the upperend fof which is formed the hook proper consisting of an overhanging head 2 above land connected by a neck to a base 3 vvhich lies'directly against and is formed integrally with the upper end of the shank.- The mount to which hooks of this character are' to be attached is, preferably, of thin Hexible material such as ypaper or the likel which may be considered to consist of an intermediate section 4 preferably having a plurality 'of circular holes 5 formed therein into which the shanks 1 ofthe hooks extend, an Outer section 6 at Oneedge of the mount, a back section 7 Which is adapted to be turned up to cover the necks of the hooks and a second Outer section 8 adapted to be turned over the' heads of the hooks as shown inFg After the Shanks of the hooks havev been inserted through the strip as, for example, by being passed through the openings, 5, the paper is bent on the dotted lines indicated at a and c sol that the section 6 overlies the base part 3 of the hooks andenters the recesses between the heads and shanks thereof. The strip is also bent on the lines e and g as indicated in Figs. l and 3 so that the rear section 7 lies directly back of the hooks and y the section 8 bends over the hooks and contacts with the heads 2 thereof, the hooks in this manner beingsecurely retained in predetermined relationship against displacement.
Slots@ and l0 'are cut'in the mounting strip at intervals, the former transv'ersely'of the rear section 7 andv slightly into the section 8, and the latter at the bend between sections 4f and 6 of the mount. Theselslots preferably areloca'ted `between thepositio'ns occupied thy-fthe. vhooks so that after the hooks are positioned in placeion the mount as-shown in- Figs. f1,-2 and 3,\the' whole may be easily wound into va coiled package, `the removal of-thepaper at'9yand 10 permitting the lbending ofthe material of the mount which otherwise would buckle yand resist the forming of the :mount and fattached hooks into such a package. lt isto be yunderstood 1 that ,the'strip may ybel-and usually will lbe of great length and will contain a very Ilarge number of hooks located one after another in a single row, wandthat, lfor purposes fof transportation "and f handling, `it may 'be v found desirable to coil the mount with the attaehedho'oks so as package.,
v to make a compact strip ofthin material "providedfwith a -plurality'of openings,1a plurality .of'lacing'hooks having zparts passing through said openings in the strip, -said ho'oksxbeing:positioned "in `a row one after the:t other and a'sections of lthe strip fat lone side bent inwardly and entering the recesses between the heads :and shan-ks'ol-A said hooks.
2. @In combination, a strip vofthin material having a plurality offopenings spacedap'ar't and'located lengthwise ofthe strip, a 'plus r 1 ralityot1 lacing'hooks'positioned on'thestrip with yparts'otthe hooks lentering the open-v ings in the strip, and a section at one side of the strip bent upwardly backof the hooks and then over the. tops olf said hooks.
3. In combination, a'strip--offthinmaterial having a plurality otopenings therein, a plurality of lacing hooks having shanks passing through said openings in the strip, said lhooks being located in a row one after i another,` a section of the strip at oneside `bent inwardly and entering the recesses 'between Vthe vheads andfshanks of said hooks', anda section at the-other's'ide offthestrip bent upwardly back of the hooks and fthen over the'h'eads'oi said hooks.

In combinationa stripof thin'flexible material having 4'a ivplurality of openings therein,-a plurality of lacing hooks having shanks vpassing through said strip, said hooks'being positioned in a row' one after another, and a section of the strip atone side bent inwardlyjand entering the recesses betweenjthefheads and Shanks ofsaid fhooks, said strip at the bend lthus made having parts removed to permit the rolling of the strip and attached hooks intoy a package.
5. In combination, a strip of thin yflexible material having a plurality of openings therein, a plurality of lacing hooks having shanks passing lthrough 'said openings in the strip, said hooks 'being positioned in a row one after another, arsection of the strip at vone side bent inwardly and entering the re- `thereof entering said openings, Pand means on the 'mount entering the `recesses'lbetween the heads and shan'ks foffsaid hooks thereby to hold vthe hooks onsaid member. -x= Y' 7. In combination,an elongatedstripya plurality oflacing hooks -arran'gedv'iniarseries along `said 'strip and temporarily VFattached thereto, one lside Ikof lsaid stripbeing 4lbent inwardly'and arranged to enter ilthe recessesv in said hooks. n v v 8. ln combination, an 'elongated istrip, sa

ll. A method yof mounting ilacing-:hooks uponan elongated strip which'consists iin passing the Shanks of 'the hooks'throughsaid strip and 'arranging them in similar positions iin-a series along'lsaid strip, land then bending overoner'edgerof the stripfand arranging it within the recesses between the heads and Shanks of the hooks.
12. A method of mounting small articles upon an elongated strip Which consists in forming a plurality of openings in said strip along a line substantially parallel to one side thereof, temporarily attaching the articles thereto at one side of said row of openings,
and their bending the strip over a portion of said articles along the line of the openings 10 so that the openings will fall in the side of the turned over portion and will render the strip more flexible when it is desired to roll the sameinto a package.
