Description
E. I. DODDS. STAY BOLT STRUCTURE.
APPLICATION FILED APR-26.1918.
1,291,790. Patented Jan. 21, 1919.
I VITNESSES I M WM i T SATES PATENT OFFICE.
ETHAN I. DODDS, 0F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIQNOR TO FLANNERY BOLT COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
STAY-BOLT STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ETHAN I. Donns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay-Bolt Structures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures and more particularly to the closure devices for the bearing sleeve, the object of the invention being to provide simple means comprising a minimum number of parts whereby the cap or closure may be secured firmly to the bearing sleeve in a manner to permit its quick removal for facilitating access to the head of the bolt for testing purposes.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a longitudinal section view; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; Fig. 3 is a plan View; Fig. 4 is a plan view of the cap, and Fig. 5 is a view of a modification of the cap.
1 represents a bearing sleeve provided with a curved inner face 2 which serves as a bearing for the head 3 of the staybolt 4.
The outer end of the bearing sleeve provides a seat 5 for a cap or closure 6. In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 1 the cap or closure is made hemispherical in shape with such internal dimensions and configuration as to provide a suitable clearance space 7 for the head of the staybolt. The convex exterior face of the cap is formed with a plurality of V-shaped recesses 8 between which raised portions 9 are provided and at the junctures of said recesses and raised portions, radial shoulders 10 are formed.
An annular locking member 11 is threaded on the bearing sleeve 1 and a portion of the inner face of this locking member is made to conform approximately to the contour of the cap or closure 6. The portion of the locking member which conforms to the general contour of the cap or closure 6 is provided with a plurality of shoulders 12 of a shape approximating that of the recesses 8 and adapted to enter said recesses so as to engage the shoulders 10 on the cap.
When the cap and locking member shall have been assembled in the manner above described, the locking member will be screwed onto the bearing sleeve until the cap or closure is pressed tightly against its seat and the parts will thus be held firmly in place. It is apparent that when the locking member is turned in the reversed direction, the cap or closure will be at once loosened from its seat and can be removed quickly with the locking ring to expose the head of the staybolt for testing purposes.
It will be observed that the locking ring is provided with an angular exterior configuration for the accommodation of a wrench.
If desired the cap or closure may be adapted for the application of a wrench, for which purpose said cap or closure may be forged with an angular portion 13, as shown in ig. 4.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve, of a cap or closure having a plurality of external recesses forming radial shoulders, and an annular locking member removably applied to the bearing sleeve and having shoulders to enter recesses of the cap and engage the shoulders thereon.
2. In a staybolt structure, the combination with an exteriorly threaded bearing sleeve, of a cap or closure to seat thereon and having a curved outer face provided with a plurality of recesses forming radial shoulders, and an annular locking member threaded on said sleeve and having an inner portion conforming approximately to the contour of the cap or closure and having shoulders to enter the recesses of the latter and engage the radial shoulders thereon.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
