Description

s. K.PADEN.
1mproyement in Car-Couplings.
' Patented July 16, 1872.
m. Hmmm/@muslo @am {aseo/QMS mams) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.sAMUEL K. PADEN, or rULAsKI, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Lettere Patent No. 129,163, dated July 16, 1872.
Specification describing a Gar-Gouplin g invented by SAMUEL K. PADEN, of Pulaski, in the county of Lawrence and State of Penn- Sylvania.
The invention will first be described, in connection with all that is necessary to a full understanding thereof, and then clearly pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 is a top view.
A represents a clevis, which i s open in front and has some play upon pin a. B is a coupling-link pivoted to one, and C acatch pivoted to the other, free end of said clevis. b c are respectively supports for the link and catch. A vertical vibratory arm, c1, allows lateral play to the catch C. This catch has a head, c2, a-pertured or vertically slotted at c3, and provided with incline c4, and holding-recess c5. D is the lifter, attached to link B at b, and having an arm, d, which passes through aperture c3 of catch. E is a hand-lever, that passes above and in front of platform of car or truck, and within easy reach of one standing thereon.
The mode of operation is as follows: When two cars come together, the catch Cof the one and the link B of the other reciprocally fasten and form a double grapple. If one breaks the other holds. If the operator proposes to 'disconnect a car he depresses lever E upon that one which is neXt thereto, and upon which he is standing.. This operates the lifter D, and
causes both links to rise up to the inclines c;
c4 of their respective catches, over which they slide as the cars are separated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A car-coupling, composed of clevis A having a slight play on pin a, the pivoted and slotted catch C having laterally-pivoted arm c1, the .pivoted link B, and the lifter D, attached at b to link, and having its arms d passing through catch, all as described.
To theabove specification of my invention I have signed my hand this 18th day of March, A. D. 1872. Y
