To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CONRAD HonnL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Rotary Compressore; and I do hereby declare the following to, be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and'to characters of reference marked thereon,- which form a part of this specification.
The present invention has reference, generally, to improvements in fluid compressors and the like; and the invention relates, more particularly, to a novel improved construction ofrotary air or other fluid compressor.
.The invention has for its principal object to provide a simple, easily operated and eflicient construction of rotary air compressor provided within its interior with a novelarrangement and construction of rotated oscillating compressor vanes or leaves,,
- and a novel means for driving or operating the latter.
The invention has for a further object to provide, in connection with the novel r0- tary compressor mechanism, a novel means and arrangement of lubrication for the internal moving parts of the compressor.
Other objects of the present invention, not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the same.
With the various objects of my present invention in view, the same consists, primarily,
in the novel construction of air compressor.
hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, 1n the varlous novel arrangements and comblnations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be more fully described in the.
following specification, and then finally embodied in the appended claims.

Referring now to the said drawings, the reference character 1 indicates acylindrical casing within which the rotary compressor mechanism is mounted. Said casing is provided at one side with an intake port 2, and at its opposite side with a discharge port 3. Said ports are respectively formed to pass through outwardly projecting portions 4 and 5, preferably forming an integral part of the'cylindrical casing 1, and provided at their outer extremities with perforate ears 6, to which may be bolted the flanges 7 of suitable coupling devices or unions 8, from which extend respectively, an air supply 9 and an air discharge pipe 10, whenever it is desirable to use either the one or the other or both of the latter.

is provided with an outer annular concentric seat or guideway 14, one side of which (the outer side) is formed by the inner surface of the wall of the casing 1, and the inner face of said erl plate 11 is further its inner side, with an inner annular eccen tric seat or guideway 17, one side of which (the inner side) is formed by the outer surface of the wall of said core-member 12, said seat or guideway 17 being axially or longitudinally opposite said seat or guideway 15.
Seated respectively in said outer annular concentric guideways'14 and 16, are rotatable ring-members l8, and extending longitudinally between said ring-members 18,
and interconnecting the same, are a plural-v ity of pintle rods 19, the same being spaced equidistant one from the other about the said ring-members l8. Journaled respectively upon said pintle rods 19, by means of their outer bearing portions 20 are a series of compressor vanes or leaves 21, the said outer bearing portions 20 thereof being so disposed as to contact slidingly, in all positions thereof during the oscillatory movements of said compressor vanes 01' leaves, with the inner surface of said casing 1. The inner ends of said compressor vanes or leaves 21 are curved inwardly, as at 22, to so shape the vanes or leaves as to render their oscillatory movements relativeto the Walls of the casing 1 most efiective during the {air compressing action or movement thereof, and at the same time assuring a prgper clearance of the core-member 12 thereby during said oscillatory movements. Disposed within said respective seats or guideways 15 and 17, so as to ride slidingly around therein, are a plurality of shoes 23. Extending longitudinally between opposite shoes 23, and interconnecting the same are a plurality of pintle rods '24:, upon which the lnner bearing portions 25 0f said compressor vanes or leaves are pivotally connected.
The said ring members 18' and the said shoes23 are disposed flush with the respective inner surfaces of said end plate 11 and the guide-plat 16, and the side edges 26 of 7 said compressor vanes or leaves 21 ride slidmgly mcontact with said flush surfaces, so
that there is practically no leakage therebetween during the compressing movements of said vanes or leaves21.

naenaao These packing strips are each provided on their under sides with'a concave surface 28 "thereof and the core-member 12,. and owing to the oppositely curved conformation of the said parts between which the same is located, it follows that said strips are interlocked therewith, and as thus arranged will move with the inner ends of the vanes or leaves upon the surface of the core-member, thus closing any intervening space against the leakage of air .when the vanes or leaves/are oscillated to compress the air on one side thereof.
The opposite end of said cylindrical casing 1 is closed by means of an end plate 30, secured by bolts, or otherwise, to said casing I. Said end plate 30 is provided with a centrally disposed outwardly extending bearing portion 31, having an extension 32 of reduced diameter at its outer end. Mounted in said bearing portion 31 is a driving shaft 33, to the inner end of which is secured, by means of a key 34, or otherwise, a driver disk 35. Said driver disk 35 is equal in diameter to the diameter of the interior of the cylindrical casing 1, and the same'is provided at its outer circumferential edge with an inwardly projecting annular flange 36, preferably disposed to ride ip/a portion of said outer concentric guideway 16, and in engagement .With the ring member 18 mounted therein. Said ring member 18- is connected in driven relation to said driver disk 35 by means of studs or pins 37, which project from said flange 36 into openings 38 formed in said ring member 18 for their reception. The said driving shaft 33 projects outwardly through said bearing portion 31. One means for driving said shaft33 comprises a'pulley 39, which is mounted upon said reduced extension 32 to rotate thereon. The hub 40 of said pulley projects outwardly beyond the end of said extension 32,
and is provided with a pair of diametrically. opposite female clutch portions 41. Secured in fixed relation to the outwardly projecting end of said shaft 33, by means of set-screws 4:2, or other suitable means, is a clutch-collar 13, provided with a pair of diametrically opposite male clutch portions 44 engaged in said femaleclutch-portions 41 of saidpulley hub 450. When said pulley 39 is driven by a belt, the rotary motion imparted thereto is transmitted through the above described clutch elements to the shaft 33. Since, however, the pulley is mounted to rotittate on the extension 32, any pulling strains thereon tending to distort an exact path of rotation is prevented from being exerted upon the shaft 33, and consequently the latter is driven smoothly on its axis by means of the intermediate clutch elements, thereby eliminating any tendency to undue friction or binding of the rotated interior mechanism and compressor vanes and leaves of the device within the cylindrical casing 1. Wnile I find the above means for driving the shaft 33 very satisfactory when the compressor is belt driven, I do not wish to be necessarily confined to such method of driving as far as the broader aspects of my invention are concerned, since it will be quite apparent that my novel compressor may be driven direct by electric motor, or it may be driven by gearing or any other suitable transmission means, either directly or indirectly from any desired source of power.
In operation, the rotation of the shaft 33 rotates the driver disk 35 connected therewith, imparting in turn a rotary movement to the ring members 18. Since the compressor vanes or leaves 21 are pivotally connected by their outer ends to said ring members 18. said outer ends of said vanes or leaves 21 are moved around in a path of travel concentric to the axis of rotation. The inner ends of said vanes or leaves 21, while the latter are thus caused to revolve about the axis of rotation, being supported by the shoes 23 riding in the guideways 15 and 17 which are disposed eccentric to the axis of rotation, are caused to travel in a path eccentric to the axis of rotation, so that. as the path of eccentricty of the inner ends of the vanes or leaves approaches the concentric path of the outer ends of the vanes or leaves, the latter are caused to oscillate bodily toward the wall of the cylindrical casing 1, and thereby effect a compressin action upon any fluid confined between the .vanes or lea-vesand said wall of the casing 1, while as the path of eccentricity of the inner ends of the vanes or leaves departs from the concentric path of the outer ends of the vanes or leaves, the latter are caused to oscillate bodily in a reverse-direction or away from the walls of the casing 1, thereby effecting a suction like action to suck or draw into the opening space between the said vanes or leaves and walls of the casing any desired fluid from a source of supply The intake port .2 of the casing 1 is so located as to deliver the fluid within the cylinder at a point where the said above described suction oscillation of the vanes or leaves is effective, and the outletor discharge port 3- of the casing 1 is so located as to discharge the fluid from the cylinder under the compression produced by the said above described-compressing oscillation of the vanes or leaves. Since a seriesof rotating oscillated vanes or leaves are employed, the suction and compressing action thereof is successively developed as the same are rotated within the casing 1, and consequently a substantially continuous discharge of fluid under compression through the discharge port 3 is effected. As will be apparent the action is simple yet effective, and dependent upon the oscillation of the rotated vanes or leaves, due to the travel of the opposite ends thereof respectively around the concentric and eccentric paths of travel, the degree of eccentricity of the latter relative to the former determining the oscillatory stroke,
and being subject to such variation as may seem desirable, and properly proportioned to the size and capacity of apparatus desired.
In addition to the novel construction and operation of the compressor above described, I wish to point out another novel feature of the construction thereof, whereby an efficient lubrication of the interior moving parts thereof is secured. This means of lubrication comprises providing the end plate 11 with a chambered boss orprojection 45, either integrally formed therewith or suitably secured thereto. The interior 46 of said chambered boss or projection 45 communicates with an opening, 47 leadin into the reservoir chamber 13 formed by t e interior of said core member 12. Connected with said boss 45, so as to communicate with the interior 46 thereof, is an 'oil supply pipe 48, which leads from a suitable source of oil supply. The oil fed through said supply pipe 48 enters said interior said boss 45, and flows into said reservolr chamber 13 of said core member 12. Formed in the wall at each end of said core member 12 is an opening or duct 49 in which is arranged a piece of wicking 50, the inner end ofwhich is submerged'in the oil 51 contained in said reservoir 13. The said opening or duct 49 communicates with each eccentric guideway 15 and .17, so that the wicking can convey the oil thereto, to be taken up by the shoes 23 travelin in said guideways, thereby lubricating t e same, and reducin the friction of their movement in said guideways. surplus of oil thus carried into said guideways 15 and 17 works its way into the pivotal connection of the inner ends of said leaves 21 with the pintle rods 19, thus ef- I am aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, without departing from the scope of my resent invention as defined in the appen ed claims. Hence, I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts as set forth in the foregoing specifica tion, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of said parts as illustrated in'the accompanying drawings.
I claim V 1. In a device of the .kind described, a cylindrical casing, a plurality of compressor vanes mounted within said casing for rotation about the axis of said casing, means for moving the outer ends of said vanes in a rotary path concentric to the axis of said casing, means for causing the inner ends of said vanes to move in a rotary path eccentric to the axis of said casing, whereby said vanes are caused to oscillate toward and away from the cylindrical wall of said casing while so rotated about the axis of the latter, the outer ends of said vanes cooperating slidingly with the cylindrical wall of said casing, an eccentrically disposed core member within said casing with which the inner ends of said vanes slidingly cooperate,
and said casing being provided with an in-- take port on one side and a discharge port on the opposite side.
2. In a device of the kind described,a cylindrical casing, a plurality of substantially radially disposed compressor vanes mounted within said casing for rotation about the axis of the latter, the outer ends of said vanes cooperating slidingly with the cylindrical wall of said casing, an eccentrically positioned longitudinally disposed core member within said casing with which the inner ends of said vanes slidingly cotiperate, means for rotating said vanes about the axis of said casing, means engaging the inner ends of said vanes to guide the same in an eccentric path of movement about the axis of said casing to cause the same to oscillate toward and away from the cylindrical wall of said casing during rotative travel therein, and said casing having an intake port positioned to communicate with the space between said vanes when the same oscillate away from the cylindrical wall of said casing and a discharge port positioned to communicate with the space between said vanes when the same oscillate toward the cylindrical wall ofsaid casing.
3. In a device of the kind described, a cylindrical casing, an end plate closing one end of said casing, an eccentrically positioned longitudinally disposed core member extending inwardly through said casing from said end-plate, a guide-plate secured to the inner end of said core-member, said end plate and said guide-plate being formed to provide in conjunction with said cylindrical wall of said casing oppositely located outer guideways concentric to the axis of said casing and in conjunction with said core member oppositely located inner guideways eccentric to the axis of said casing, a plurality of substantially radially disposed compressor vanes mounted between said end plate and said guide plate, means riding in said outer concentric guideways for pivotally supporting the outer ends of said compressor vanes, and rotating the latter about the axis of said casing, means riding in said inner eccentric guideways forv pivotally supporting the inner ends of said compressor vanes and guiding the same in an eccentric path of movement about the axis of said casing whereby the same are caused to oscillate toward and away from the cylindrical wall of said casing, the outer ends of said vanes cooperating slidingly with the cylindrical Wall of said casing, the inner ends of said vanes cooperating slidingly with said core member, and said casing having an intake port in its cylindrical wall adapted to coma municate with the space between said vanes when the same oscillate away from the wall of said casing and a discharge port positioned in its cylindrical wall adapted to communicate with the space between said vanes when the same oscillate toward the wall of said casing.

In a device of the kind described, a cylindrical casing, an end plate closing one end of said casing, an eccentrically positioned longitudinally disposed core member secured to said end-plate within said casing, a guide-plate secured to the free end of said core-member, said end-plate and said guide plate being formed to provide'in conjunction'with said cylindrical wall of said casing oppositely located outer guideways concentric to the axis of said casing and in conjunction with said core member oppositely located inner guideways eccentric to the axis of said casing,-ring-members rotatably' mounted in said outer concentric guideways, shoe-pieces mounted to move slidingly in said inner eccentric guideways, a plurality of substantially radially disposed compressor vanes mounted between ner endsof said vanes with and between pairs of said shoe-pieces, the outer ends of said vanes eotiperating slidingly with the cylindrical walls of said casing, the inner ends of said vanes cotiperating with said core member, means connected with the opposite end of said casing providing a centrally or axially disposed bearing portion, a shaft journaled in said bearing portion, a rotary driver disk secured to the inner end of said shaft, means coupling said driver disk with an adjacent ring member to impart rotary movement to said vanes, and said cylindrical wall of said casing having on one side an intake port and on its opposite side a discharge port.

In a device of the kind described, a cylindrical casing, an end plate closing one end of said casing, an ecc'entrically positioned longitudinally disposed core member secured to said end-plate within said casing, a guide-plate secured to the free end of said core member, said end plate and said guideplate being formed to provide in conjunction with said cylindrical wall of said casing oppositely located outer guideways concentric to the axis of said casing and in conjunction with said core member oppositely located inner guideways eccentric to the axis of said casing, ring-members rotatably mounted in said outer concentric guideways, shoe-pieces mounted to move slldingly in said inner eccentric guideways, a plurality of substantially radially disposed compressor vanes mounted between said end plate and said guide plate, means for pivotally connecting the outer ends of said vanes with and between said ring members,
- means for pivotally connecting the inner ends of said vanes with and between pairs of said shoe-pieces, the outer ends of said vanes cooperating slidingly with the cylindrical walls of said casing, the inner ends of said vanes cooperating with said core member, packing strips engaged between said inner ends of said vanes and the surface of said core member in slidable relation to the latter, means for driving saidring-members to rotate said vanes, and said cylindrical wall of said casing having'on one side an intake port and on its opposite side a discharge ort. p 6. In a device of the kind described, a cylindrical casing, an end plate closing one end of said casing, an ecoentrioally positioned longitudinally disposed core member secured to said end-plate within said casing, a guide-plate secured to the free end'of said core-member, said end plate and said guideplate being formed to provide in conjunction with said cylindrical wall of said casing oppositely located outer guideways concentric to the axis of said casing and in conjunction With said core member oppositely located inner guideWa-ys eccentric to the axis of sa d casing, ring-members rotatably mounted in said outer concentric guideways,
shoe-pieces mounted to move slidingly in face of said core member in slidable relation to the latter, means connected with the opposite end of said casing providing a centrally or axially. disposed bearing portion, a shaft journaled in said bearing ortion, a rotary driver disk secured to the inner end of said shaft, means coupling said driver disk with an adjacent ring member to impart rotary movement to said vanes, and said cylindrical Walls of said casing having on one side an intake port and on the other side a discharge port.
7. In a device of the kind described, a cylindrical casing,.an end plate closing one end of said casing, an eccentrically positioned longitudinally disposed core member secured to said end-plate within said casing, a guide-plate secured to the free end of said core member, said end plate and said guideplate being formed to provide in conjunction with said cylindrical wall of said casing oppositely located outer guideways concentric to the axis of said casing and in conjunction with said core member oppositely located inner guideways eccentric to the axis of said casing, ring-members rotatably mounted in said outer concentric guideways, shoe-pieces mounted to move slidingly in said inner eccentric ideways, a plurality of substantially ra ially disposed compressor vanes mounted between said end plate and said guide-plate, means for pivotally connecting the outer ends of said' vanes with and between said ring' members, means for pivotally connecting the inner ends of said vanes with and between pairs of said shoe-pieces, the outer ends of said vanes cotiperating slidingly with the cylindrical walls of said casing, the inner ends of said vanes coiiperating with said core member, packing strips engaged between said inner ends of said vanes and the surface of said core member in slidable relation to the latter, means connected with the opposite end of said casing providing a centrally or ax ialiy disposed bearing portion, a shaft joursaid core member,
naled in said bearing portion, a rotary driver disk secured to the inner end of said shaft, means coupling said driver disk with an adjace'ntring member to impart rotary movement to sa1d vanes, a pulley mounted to rotate on said bearing portion, the hub of said pulley having'female clutch portions at one end thereof, a clutch collar secured to the outer end of said shaft having male clutch portions engaged 1n sa1d female clutch portions of said pulley hub, and sa1d cylindrical wallsof said casing having on one side an intake-port and on the opposite side a discharge port.
