Description
PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM P. HUGHES, 0F ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
IMPRCVEMENT IN BLACKlNG-CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,137, dated July 16, 187'2.
Specification describing a certain Improvement in'Blacking-Cases, invented by WILLIAM P. HUGHES, of the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and' State of N ew York.
Nature of the Invention.
My invention consists of a box having iron bearings hinged in a peculiar manner, whereby, when the box is open, said bearings form a support for the foot, but when the box is closed -they fold up in compact shape and assist in holding the blacking-brush in place, as hereinafter described.
General Description.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvement, showing the box open; Fig. 2, a cross-section ofthe same, showing the box closed; Fig. 3, an elevation of one of the foot-bearings attached to the two parts bearings are presented upright to support the heel and ball of the foot 5 but when closed, as in Fig. 2, they fold over in the `jointed form shown, and present no impediment to the folding action. To allow this folding action the construction and arrangement are as follows: C C are stii' standards secured to the bottom of one-half of the box at opposite ends and projecting a little above the top. To the tops of these standards the bearings are pivoted direct, as shown at a a. D D are corresponding arms of the other half of the box, pivoted both at the top and bottom, at b b, the bottom attachment being to lugs c c screwed to the bottom of the box, and the top to lugs of the bearings, as on the opposite side. This allows free folding, and when opened the bearings lie crosswise of the central hinged connection of the box. E is a spring or strap for holding the blacking-box closely in one corner of the bottom of the case; and G is an upright spring for holding the blacking brush, which lies lengthwise in the space ofthe case. When the case is closed the bearings B B shut down over the top of the brush and keep it in place.
This device is in simple and compact form when closed, and can be easily packed in a trunk or valise. It is a convenient household article, and can be used on a chair, sofa, or other article without danger of soiling, as the open box on each side will catch all dirt.
