IMPROVEMENT IN COMPOUND IMPLEMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,116, dated July 16, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EvAN A. EDWARDS, of San Buenaventura, Santa Barbara county, State of California, have invented a Combined Pencil-Sharpener, Pencil-Holder, and Twine- Gutter; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention and improvement Without further invention or experiment.
My improvement relates to a compound implement consisting of a pencilsharpener, pencil-holder, and twine-cutter in one instrument, so that it will be convenient for clerks and other persons who are compelled by the nature of their occupation to frequently use a pencil.
in order to explain my invention so that others will be able to understand its construction and operation, reference is bad to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of the instrument. Fig.2 represents a front view of same.
A represents an ordinary pencil-sharpener. To one side of this pencil-sharpener I secure two clasp springs, b b, which are properly curved to form a clasp to receive the pencil 0. Between the clasp and sharpener I secure upon one side a blade or knife, e, which extends 'from one end to the other of the sharp ener. In the present instance the edge of the blade is represented as rounded from end to end, which I consider the most convenient form, but other forms could be used as well. Between the clasp and sharpener upon the opposite side I secure a pin-fastening, f, by means of which the instrument can be fastened to the clothing. I have found it most convenient when attached to the vest near the riglat vest-pocket, as the knife is more readily use The use of the sharpener and clasp is evident to every one. These articles I render convenient by connecting them together and at tachin g them by means of the pin to the cloth ing. The knife serves the purpose of a knife or pair of shears to cut twine when the wearer is tying up bundles or desires to cut a string.
Having thus described my invention, what 'I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A compound implement, consisting of the pencil-sharpenerA, pencil-holder b b, and blade 0, when constructed and arranged as described, and provided with the pin-fastening f, for the purpose specified.
